For Debbie Downer - I am a 45 yo returned to ballet to study to teach. When I was 16 I had a spinal fusion for severe scoliosis which stopped my learning in its tracks. This should not have been the case. I could have continued and trained in teaching or choreography or choreology etc. When I was 21, due to my training, I went on to train as an aerialist and contortionist in a circus. From there I performed in fringe and comedy dance groups on and off for years. At 42 I had to have a full hip replacement. I have very severe genetic issues and the best treatment is daily exercise. 6 months after surgery I realised it was time to return to ballet. Since then I have done RAD exams from grade 4 to inter foundation, Intermediate in October. I have done the teacher course in PBT. Every day my technique improves, my bones get stronger. Ballet is not just about getting a place at the Aus Ballet or being a soloist in a company. It is a life of healing, community, joy, expression. I know dancers with Downs Syndrome, I have a friend who is in a company and she had her leg amputated when she was 17. There is specialist dance therapy for mental health. There is Silver Swans for adults over 50 who wish to start learning to express through ballet and stay strong. Realistic expectation? We can dance all our life, youth is fleeting. There are thousands possibilities! One of my favourite dancers is over 100 years old, and she has her own company here in Australia!!! Of course the Aussie Ballet won't be knocking on my door to employ me as a soloist, but I HAVE done master classes with half a donzen principles! 45. Mangled. And happy as can be! Don't let the gaslighters get you down!

tani thunderballs I love your post! I am a 60-year-old dancer, I have been doing West Coast swing for about 18 years now, and during that time I've had one knee replacement and two hip replacements. And I keep dancing, and competing, and loving all of it.I also find that movement is my greatest joy and comfort, and the training I need to do, including stretching, private lessons, workshops, and going to the gym just keeps me going daily

tani thunderballs I’m so impressed by your story and I’m so excited for you that you are going ahead and living in your joy, what you can do, instead of what you can’t do. Because of all my surgeries there are many things that I’m not able to do but I have to keep reminding myself how lucky I am that I can still dance and have money to travel and indulge my passion.

As someone who had my own business for years, I was delighted to see how you organize your time, expand your offerings and employ assistants to multiply your productivity. This is so important for anyone who wants to move from dancing into teaching/coaching ballet. It's either a business where you make money or a hobby where you don't. As someone who started ballet very late in life (I'm 68), I know that my turnout and extensions will never make Dance magazine. That's ok because that's not my goal I will keep stretching myself both physically and mentally (I recently learned to speak Italian). Life is out there. Embrace it.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you what you’re doing is wrong as I’m a 14 year old girl who dances almost every style and have found so much joy in doing so. I discovered your channel very recently like a couple of weeks ago before I auditioned to be a dancer in a pantomime of beauty and the beast. Now your videos inspire me and many others every single day to give it our all and a few tips and tricks to do so. I would love to attend your coaching however this isn’t possible as I live in England but I still love watching your videos and learning to laugh off my mistakes in when dancing. I’m have got into the pantomime and it is my second year of doing so and I agree that it is all about believing. Never stop that message. 💖

I absolutely adore ballet dancers. They are professional athletes and artists in one. The power and grace of a gymnast with the athletic ability of a pro athlete if not more. And not only the physical toll but the mental strength of ballet dancers is out right insane! Ok that being said though.. the mental and physical stress these dancers can go through and the shady past of pro dancing is definitely there but it is definitely getting better I believe. Have a good day everyone! Love these videos!

Hey Miss Claudia! I have been dancing since i was about 4 years old and i am now almost 14. i have loved it so much and i honestly would not know who i am without it. For a while now, i have been watching your videos and learning from them and i've felt i've become such a strong dancer. But i have been growing so fast and now i'm so tall and i've felt like my dreams of being a professional dancer were coming to an end. But i didn't mind that because i wanted to just dance and not just do ballet, so i set my mind on that. But things don't always turn out how you want hey, because after one night of one eistedford, i got a major labral tear in my hip cartlidge as well as displaysure. On Thursday, i found this out and i also found out i could never dance again. It's been really tough but i know dance will always be a part of my blood. Thank you so much for every single one of your videos 💜
@gailjacobson97366 жыл бұрын
Alyce Warney sweetie, you are young , surely you can heal and perhaps do another type of dancing that is easier on the body - not so demanding on your hips? Something where you don’t need to have extreme turn out and hyper extension? There are so many amazing dance forms in the world, ballroom, hip-hop, swing, many kinds of social dancing and solo dancing that don’t require such rigor as ballet. Perhaps one of those would give you joy maybe not now, but sometime later in your life. I think once you are a dancer you’re always a dancer it never changes
@awyce6 жыл бұрын
thank you. yeh i've been told i can't do dance the same way i have been for the rest of my life as my hips weren't made for it. nothing over 90 degrees

Dear Alyce, I felt really emotional reading your message. You sound super brave. I've been sick for a long time but I'm doing a lot better than expected. -For me, keeping an eye out for new therapies or for people who've exceeded expectations for recovery has been a huge part of making so much progress. There's more to people than flesh and bone. Helpful therapies can come from many different places. -I hope you find all the right people to help you recover as much as humanly possible! Best Wishes, C.

I had the same. My music teacher at school told me, when I was 12 that I can not sing and never will be a singer and shouldn't be sad about it. A year later I was singing in the opera house in child choir (where you have to audition for) and had my first main role in a children's opera from the same opera house. What you say is so true!! With voices: Especially lower or heavier voices develop later than sopranos. Or are just late bloomers. Even if you don't have a career, you can have a wonderful hobby and there are so many interesting things you can do with dance. ❤️

Hey Claudia, I love your videos. I'm an adult who started too late to be a professional ballerina. However, I love ballet. I practice almost every day, cause I feel it is such an important part of who I am and I have made a huge progress over the years. Besides this, , it helps me with my singing and my acting. But what really is the most important to me, is that it is like my "skeleton", I mean, it holds me through life. I need it. If I don't dance, I die. It is part of my essence. Have you ever taught non professional adults like me? Would you ever be willing to make a video targeting people like me? That would be so inspiring. Much love.
