Best explain i've seen. Relay is important. Contact-points of relay engineered for higher amperages. Bigger surface of contact-points. It's about the higher amperage the pump-motor needs. Without relaly will burn the contact-points of the OEM-horn-button. Like welding. A high-current spark. I'm Electrician

Great video thanks for sharing. Is it possible to ground the horn to the chassis, rather than wiring it up to the negative on the battery ?
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 2 жыл бұрын
You should be able to ground it to the chassis long as you have a good ground, just clean it up good so you have good contact, but the hot to the relay has to come to the battery, not a key on. That way it has the full 12v from the battery when you hit the horn. Thanks for watching.

Want to add this on a electric bike on the front. To protect the unit from rain wanted to insert this unit into a PVC pipe with the horn output exposed. What size PVC pipe would this fit into?

Can you wire 86 to positive on battery as I cannot find a constant positive wire on my vehicle for the horn switch
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 2 жыл бұрын
You should have 2 wires going to your horn, it works just like a doorbell button or a light switch. When you push the horn/button it just closes the circuit. If you do not use the original wiring for your horn, and you connect the wire to 86 it will just send constant power to the horn and it will blow forever or until the battery dies. You need to be able to break that circuit somewhere. Usually at the horn you can pull the leads off at the horn and it is labeled, you may have to make a jumper to the new air horn. If you have what I call an "old school" horn and it only has one wire and is bolted to the frame, some of the old bikes just grounded the horn to the chassis with the bolt, and the wire going to the horn when you push the button was hot. Hope that explains better, but short answer hook battery to 86 horn will not stop blowing.

why you need that relay? is not posibil to put + - to + - without relay?
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, but the relay should be used. To provide the most power, and thus get the most noise, you wire a relay to power your horn. The relay uses a small amount of power the original switch circuit to turn on and off a bigger amount of power from the battery to the horn. The smaller wires from the original horn button do not carry as much power down them in some instances. When you push the horn button the relay closes and uses the power directly from the battery. Thanks for watching.

let me ask the hard question: where does one purchase the relay and what does one ask for? i'm guessing there are different relays so i want to know which to get. thanks man, and i enjoy your voyager vids...
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 3 жыл бұрын
You can get a relay on Amazon, Walmart, Autozone, or Just about any other automotive parts store. 20 amp relay will do just about anything. The fuse that comes with the unit will determine the amperage, if not if you look at the directions it will tell you use a 5,10, etc.... So as long as you have a fuse in the line the amperage of the relay can be higher because the fuse will trip first. Relays can be used for multiple things, the main reason to use one is to keep from draining power when it’s not being used. I haven’t done a video yet on a relay But if you’ve never used a relay look on KZbin Or Google or a little bit more on how our relay works so you don’t do any unnecessary damage. Thanks for watching I’ll put the relay on the list of things that need to be addressed individually.

Hi don’t know how much you know about electric ⚡️ but have a question,I have a Yamaha R1 2004 and bought this horn,I want to install it just the way you did yours I would like to connect the positive to a wire not to the battery 🔋 how could I find such wire.
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 4 жыл бұрын
Well I know enough about it to know if I had it here I could probably find one but not enough to teach you without you being here over messages. If you can find the fuse box sometimes there are open holes for accessories that will be “hot” all the time and sometimes “key on”. The best bet is go to auto store and get an eyelet or u connector if your not sure and a small roll of 16g wire and just put under battery terminal. I’m sure somewhere on that bike you can find but without a voltmeter and some digging can’t help much more than that.

Greg Rager I know where the fuse box at the front left side and there are loads of wires,I will check with me volt meter cause I have so much stuff connected to my bike the less wire I have t be trailing would be better for me.i will prob in the wires and see cause I need to connect a smart turn system and I need a live so will used the same one.

I want to put this on my 2019 MB Sprinter since the horn on the sprinter sounds like a weak VW horn. Can this be wired so I just use my regular button on the steering wheel? How many amps does it pull?
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 4 жыл бұрын
mtn ride The original button will work fine. Basically with the relay you are running a hot from the battery so the drain will be minimal. I’m not sure exactly what it is may be on their specs sheet. So your positive from the battery and good ground from battery or frame are on 2 posts of the relay the other 2 are your existing horn wires so that way your horn button works. Hope that explains it better. Looks much more complicated than it is.

mtn ride Good deal, come back post a comment let us all know how that sounds. Wiring should be about the same most airhorns use the same type set up power and ground from the battery existing horn wires to actually engage.

Hi Greg, nice videos! I will be a new Voyager owner soon but have been car and motorcycle mechanic for 40 years. Is the horn really efficient under the fairing? I am really hesitant on that one...
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 4 жыл бұрын
Luc Thibault It May knock off a decibel or so but the cowl is just thin plastic. The original horn is mounted up under the cowl (not inside but still up under) to the frame so really not much different. It’s not a pretty looking horn so for me the cowl worked best. Still will get anyone’s attention even remotely close to you, and the cowl is not insulated in any way so may actually work out better because the entire front becomes like a bell or box for the sound. Not to mention all the wiring, connections and horn protected from the elements will last longer. There is room on the frame though if you go that way. Was just a preference. Thanks for watching please hit like and subscribe if you haven’t already.

@@RagerJackOfAll Hi Greg - excellent! You have convinced me sir! On another topic I am trying to find a good tutorial on coolant replacement. The service manual just shows the basic procedure but from what I've seen other folks use vinegar and distilled water to make a couple of cleaning cycles but how do you go with the tank needed to be removed ? Or do you leave the tank unbolted and lift it up when you have to fill the system and reach the cap underneath ? Thanks Mate
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 4 жыл бұрын
Luc Thibault The video below shows you how to get the tank off, not too difficult a few tricky spots. You have to remove the gas tank to change the coolant in the radiator cap is underneath the middle of the tank. I’d have to check on the flush Some radiators are made of different materials Putting the wrong thing inside can corrode or caused damage If unsure unless the bike just has a lot of miles on it and has never been done can probably just flush it with water. If the water comes out of the bottom clean that’s all you should need, if it comes out with black are colors in it probably needs some sort of a cleaner. All you have to do to drain just take the bottom radiator hose off And take the radiator cap off the top will help it flow out faster. Same with the coolant make sure you use Kawasaki approved Coolant. All coolant is not the same. I would also suggest picking up a radiator cap while your doing it, A few bucks for the radiator cap now will be a lot easier than trying to take the gas tank off if it fails before the next coolant change. Good luck with it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGTZiHSpr96JhbM

@@RagerJackOfAll Thanks mate. Will probably make many of your improvements as this is what I like to do with my bikes, did the same with my Intruder 1400 over the years. I also own a collection item, a 1975 Honda CB360T, in pristine condition. You have one big advantage down there: hot weather! For us up here the season will end soon. Time to hibernate and work on our machines for next summer!

Luc Thibault very True been so busy this summer with wirk may have put 300 miles on the road but basically can ride year round here so I’ll put some miles on this winter. I’ve always been a 70s bike guy. I’ve had 5 750 H2’s a couple H1’1s. Looking for an H2 again sold my last one about 8 years ago regretting every day since. Not to mention going price at the time was about 5k mostly restored with a 120hp Fast By Gast engine on it. Same bike 15k now. Can’t pull the trigger. Other favorite is a Hayabusa, Sold my 14 for the voyager. Can get a new one in Rockingham NC for 12,500 every day so makes buying a 50 year old bike for 15 tough. Keep in touch with your upgrades if you need anything else let me know.

I have a 2019 Voyager and I'm glad you have these great videos. I'm thinking about installing an air horn as well. Isn't there enough room where the factory horn is? It looks like you can mount it there. Also, I think I'd rather remove the fuel tank to get power from the battery than removing the fairing (too many screws) :-)
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 5 жыл бұрын
There probably is, I was worried about the forks hitting and like anything electronic the more protection it has the longer it will last. I also am pretty comfortable ripping things apart lol. As long as you can mount it there just consider the fresh air tube I’d run under the seat or in the cowl if you ride in the rain. You Still need to get power from somewhere, there’s nothing around the horn to draw power from so you’ll have to fish wires under the tank to get the relay in. Let me know if you need anything else I’m doing a video this weekend of removing the tank.

@@RagerJackOfAll Are you happy with this horn? Is it loud enough? This is my next project.
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 5 жыл бұрын
It’s 10x louder than the factory horn, not like a truck but will get someone attention and maintain a reasonable size. I’m happy with it. I tried a “louder” factory size horn that was a waste. Lol should have done a video on that.
@RagerJackOfAll
@RagerJackOfAll 4 жыл бұрын
Yes sorry been so busy with work, yes you could mount right where the factory one is, I just wanted to keep mine a "sleeper", had seen some others online and just didn't like the way it looked but could mount that thing in the trunk if you wanted people will hear it! lol Not as loud as a truck air horn but for its size and on a bike it works.

@RagerJackOfAll

Sounds like you either have a bad relay, bad ground or you are running your wires to the wrong contact points. I did this video 2+ years ago, if you just got the horn possible something has changed, but I would double check your ground first, then make sure not crossing a wire and over time they may have changed the relay, but should still be similar, power from the battery to the relay on the + side, then the horn red to one contact, the horn ground to the other which is basically just a switch to close the 2 together sending power to the horn and the last one sending power to the horn. The horn is grounded either back to the battery or a good clean chassis ground. Hope that helps.
