Hi everyone it’s the annoying girl from the video 👋 l really do appreciate your concern for my well being but let’s get a few things straight… Brandon and I have a very brother/sister relationship. We both equally yap at each other (daily) but we still have a sense of mutual respect. That’s the only way we remained friends for the last couple years. In fact, while we were caving he was actually very respectful, helpful, and at no point made me feel fear or pressured. Y’all are making shit up in your head 😂 The cave itself was NOT that bad (for me), the only reason I had any level of anxiety was because it’s a thrilling activity- everyone gets a little scared. Same with skydiving, or bungee jumping… it would be weird/concerning if you weren’t. I’ve done thrilling type activities before, this is not my first rodeo. I just don’t let fear consume me, nor do I let it dictate my life. Don’t get me wrong she’s important to have, but only as a consultant, not a leader. The corkscrew was actually not bad at all because I’m small. The only reason why I freaked out was because I wasn’t listening to Brandon. So many times he said “you’re ok, you already did the corkscrew…” but I was not listening to him. I thought the corkscrew was up ahead and that it was going to be a very long corridor as tight as the “hole” I just crawled through. I did not want to do what I created in my imagination. Guess what…the long tight corridor did not exist hahah. Brandon helped me out by giving me a pep talk and encouraging me to move forward because that’s what I wanted. If at any point he said, “ok let’s turn around you’re freaking out” I would have been sooooo mad at him and disappointed at how he views me. When I finally decided that I didn’t want to go further, Brandon was soooooo nice about it. Totally out of character from our brother/sister dynamic. And I actually wish he pushed me a little harder because I regret so much not going ahead with him. So Brandon if you’re reading this.. I’m mad at you for not encouraging me a little more to go further! In conclusion, 1) I’m not claustrophobic, I could do it again absolutely no problem. 2) i trust Brandon. And I get to because I’ve known him longer and more personally than anyone in this comment section 3) we’re friends with bickering personalities (check out our series where we live in my van together, you’ll understand 😆) and frankly, we didn’t even bicker in the cave like I thought we would. 4) I’m a grown woman, I make my own choices and I chose to take the opportunity to cave with Brandon when he asked me to go. He at NO POINT EVER pressured me to go. I’m actually offended anyone assumed that’s what it would have taken to get me to do something like this. Thank you Brandon for the opportunity and safely taking me through hell and back! 🫶

Imagine your lights go out and you start hearing odd noises. Noises that seem unnatural. Faint breathing and moaning as you're trying to figure out what you're going to do. The air is getting warmer even though it's dark outside because time is speeding up. You get wedged and can't believe you're stuck because it wasn't that hard getting through there going in but realizing the walls are slowly caving in. It's getting harder to breathe as the moisture starts turning to steam with the heat that's enveloping the space. You hear occasional pops as walls meet and crush in other areas. You just manage to squeeze through before getting crushed when you look up and see white glowing eyes staring at you. A voice says, "this is my cave and you're trespassing. The punishment is death!" The glowing eyes fade to black, and you're thinking about what to do when suddenly, it's over...........

The ropes are not there to serve as vertical gear. They were left there so that you can find your way out... or through. I can't even believe that I used to crawl through these muddy hell holes. I wasn't even able to watch all the way through without stopping to catch my breath, and I used to map caves back in my twenties. The last time I was in one, I very nearly made a fatal mistake and wound up sitting down in the bottom of a 7 story drop (straight down) because it is so much easier to go down a wet rope than to climb up one. Thank God one of the two of us had the sense to not go down. I sat in the bottom of that dark hole.... dark like most can't even imagine... two hours into an unmapped cave... for most of the night. I had many hours to ponder whether the only person alive who knew where I was had been able to make it back out and make the hour drive at 2:00 AM to wake members of our local NSS chapter in Birmingham. I'll never forget hearing those distant familiar voices and seeing the flicker of lights above after what wound up being six hours alone in the bowels of the earth. Kevin Mccormick, David Caudle and a few others saved my life that night. I'd still be down in that hole if one of them hadn't had a cable ladder and enough engineering savvy to find a way to secure it to the top of the crack into which I so foolishly dropped. To any young, eager spelunkers reading this - never go in further than you know you will be able to go back. Never assume that you'll be able to find the other end of an unmapped cave. And never, EVER go in without leaving someone on the surface who knows where you are and will get help if you haven't emerged by the time you should've. It's true that fears can be beaten, but it's equally true that some fears exist to prevent us from ending ourselves when bravado overrules logic and sense. EDITED ON 7/17/2024: Thank you, internet friends, for the engagement, likes and discussion! It's been like waking up an old part of me being able to engage, answer questions and chat about this experience. I genuinely appreciate you!

One of the most vivid memories I have of my childhood was going to get water at a natural spring with my grandfather. On the way there, we passed 2 cars with some young men standing on the side of the small gravel road waving for help. My grandfather stopped(he had no fear being a WW2 vet and always armed. It was a different time anyway). One of the men told us they'd been caving and one of their friends had an accident and they couldn't get him out. My grandfather told them he would notify authorities and return(no cell phones back then). We came back, and several volunteers showed up shortly. I sat in the truck while my grandfather and the other men went in the cave to help the young man. It actually wasn't very long before they emerged with the young man carrying him on a small sled. His head was covered with blood, and unfortunately, he didn't make it. I was only 6 years old, and it was something that maybe I shouldn't have seen, but it wasn't traumatizing or anything. It did affect me. I went on countless adventures with my grandfather, even in some caves. You can bet your ass I was always weary of caves after that and made sure I was being safe no matter what we were doing. He was retired, so I spent every day with him. I didn't know it, but he was teaching me wilderness survival and how to live off the land. The education I got from the time we spent together was priceless. Although we were poor in material things, I couldn't help but think I had the childhood experience of a lifetime. But to this day, I always think about that young man before going into a cave(I've been in a lot). I actually appreciated that he never tried to suger coat things or shield me from the possibility that things could go wrong. I knew to take things seriously from a young age. He didn't need to explain it to me. He was a man of few words and actually rarely spoke unless I asked questions or wanted to talk about things. I really wish he had lived long enough to be a part of my kids' lives. Other than his friends, I've met very few men who were anything like him. They've all been gone for years now.

Then that's not change if you're ignorant buddy, plus you're making a big deal about a word that number one has always existed and number two different word's exist for different people who choose to learn what they mean and speak how they want to. While some are just completely useless but oh well, and society was never about what you said just now because bots like you have always been dumb and your comment is showing it right now. Plus make yourself better and stop relying on other people to do it for you, that's basically what you said and you treated it likes its normal when it's not. Plus you have short word's meaning the same thing and long word's meaning the same thing. It's not that deep it's just a language that's versatile, and you're making a big deal about it like that guy above because you hate change and you hate uniqueness. So therefore making a word longer isn't dumb unless it's being done for dumb intent, common sense ain't so common no more I clearly see. @@BrandonGross seriously! The amount of damage that’s been done due to human traffic is huge. As I mentioned to you in another comment, if you get to the end, you will be treated to a still-standing formation that has not been damaged. The limestone formation goes from ceiling to floor and looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. It is at the literal end of the cave, but beyond where you guys stopped there are at least 3 places where it is significantly tighter than anything you went through getting to your stoppage point. This includes an area similar to the corkscrew but that constricts tighter on all sides AND does so through a curve. Lastly, toward the end there is a large drop of greater than 10 feet. It should be done with abseiling equipment if possible, because it is just on the other side of one of the tightest squeezes in the entire system. You can’t go head first in to the drop…feet first only, and like I said…best if done on ropes and belays. There is only one super tight squeeze once the bottom of the pit is reached, but it too is tighter than anything you did up to this point. Seriously…I wouldn’t attempt it unless you have a professional guide with you. Especially since Sarah, while brave, does not have experience in cave rescue. If she got caught on the other side of you and you were trapped, she would be trapped as well. Not trying to discourage you…only encouraging you to go in prepared for areas that are much more technically difficult than what you did in any of your descents in to Hell Hope. Be safe man.

I work in caves so fully understand being in wild caves. This was fantastic to watch. I disagree with…well, everyone…they were in no way ‘underprepared’. A helmet is great if it will physically fit through the holes but in this situation, it’s more annoying than anything. You rarely have loose rocks in a Karst cave and the formations don’t fall, it’s to help with bumping your head more than falling rocks. Two light sources is really all you need or usually have room to take. Rainy season doesn’t matter! Most caves don’t flood, even if it floods outside, it’s just a bit wetter. I know that seems weird but it’s true. Their communication was excellent, calm, respectful and mature. He was not a “guide”, he just happened to have been there a few times, years ago. Both decided to go as adults who are capable of making their own decisions. Wild caving is exhilarating, scary, lovely and tense,especially when you have been there before but don’t remember it super well and have someone with you. I thought they worked great together and sounded very much like we do in the wild caves, calm and sensible. I would go caving with these two anytime.

@@BrandonGross btw…one thing I did in the past, before I was so claustrophobic, was take plastic siding that is durable but only like 1/16” thick. You can cut in to strips about as wide as your shoulders and in 2-3’ lengths. These make sliding through tight places much easier to do, and they can be pulled in front of you once past each section.

@@miketausig4205That is an absolutely genius idea man, thank you for sharing. Would definitely be good to bring with you for an emergency situation if you regularly did tight caves like this.

I have a question for the cavers out there: while getting in there, how can you be sure there is enough oxygen to be safe? In CO2 is hevier than air, is there a risk to intoxicate while getting in the lower part of the cave?

@@SarahShamblinI think before you both went in, y’all needed to come up with a specific safe word that meant “leave 100%, no questions asked.” All that conversation made stuff confusing. I believe you now saying you didn’t actually want to leave but he had to keep asking to make sure, which came off like he wasn’t really taking you seriously.

First few seconds into the video and already having anxiety. I’ve never tested whether I’m claustrophobic or not but I have bad dreams about being stuck and I get anxiety seeing others go through it.. and I panic if my hands get stuck when taking a shirt off (which I only wear larger shirts now because of that) but I think I’m claustrophobic.. no joke because it’s such a real panic when just thinking about getting stuck somewhere.. her crying in the beginning literally made my heart race.. I totally felt that panic 😭

Hey, you finally made it to the Hall of the Mountain King! Good job. I see the Buddha Room in your future ;) ~Binky PS how did you find the accuracy of the map between the Corkscrew and Pit Stop? Folks have been saying there are some significant details/side-passages that are missing, leading to much confusion while trying to navigate that section. I'd like to get that part cleaned-up for the 4.0 version of the map.

It takes a strong mind set to do this. If you freak out and think you have to get out NOW you are screwed lol. You have to go back through everything in reverse to escape. Much respect.
@bst8577 ай бұрын
If you were ok before you went in, you can get back to that place. You might need to sit and chill for a bit, but your mind will start to reframe the situation, and work through the fear. After feeling panic, it can take up to an hour for the nervous system to calm down, so you just have to ride it out and wait, all the while reminding yourself of truths such as, you're in no direct danger, you only have to do what you've already done to get back out, you've got as much time as you need, etc etc. A good guide should be able to help you a lot, they're not just people who know the route, but they also know what its like to be scared inside a cave and how to overcome it.

The amount of times negative things were said that could easily make things worse is insane. He was unsure about everything and I have no idea how this woman had the mental fortitude to keep going. Him saying “If you get hurt, I don’t even know if you could get rescued”???? WTAF? Who says that when they have someone with them who is nervous. This is all on top of neither of them being dressed or prepared for the situation. Had something happened, I don’t think Sarah would be so flowery about her experience because someone watching this after an accident would easily see that this guy put them both in harm’s way.
