When deer venture out on slippery fresh ice, it’s a death sentence. Wolves commonly use this technique very often. The deer just slip and slide and eventually just become deathly exhausted.

Build yourself a smitty sled... in a normal season up in alberta rockies we can get 2-3 feet of snow... most of our good fishing lakes are in parks or are town water supply so not allowed any vehicles or snowmobiles on the ice... built myself a smitty sled a couple years ago... if you have to pull your gear out by hand ITS A GAME CHANGER... i have close to 200lbs of gear that i haul out and its ten times easier than a tobogan... the added plus was i bought skies from a thrift shop, and built the rest from junk around yard (ply wood, 1/2 inch gas pipe, some old tent poles)... total cost under $40... it was well worth the time... just do it and you will never go back.

Get a smitty sled for first ice! I see all of you YT fisherman pulling sleds manually just for the first week or so of ice season, since you guys have snow machines and trucks to use later, but let me tell ya, as an ice angler whose only transportation across the lake is his own to legs, a smitty sled is a game changer when there's snow on the lake! You can buy kits, but they are quite easy to DIY as well. Totally worth the investment, so maybe something to consider on seasons like these where the ice is thin and covered in snow.

Also, would love to see more about the Panoptix kit. Garmin doesn't even list it but retailers have it with minimal info. I started with the old PS22 and Panoptix and think it's an interesting option but would love to see more info on the setup like that odd clamp thing in the photos and how it does side by side with a livescope setup. From what I can find, it seems that this could be achieved with the LVS34 more or less too by just dangling it down a hole with no pole. Edit: I did find a photo of it on Garmin's site but it looks like that clamp is like 2 feet max up from the transducer? What about thick ice?
@ClaytonSchickOutdoors2 күн бұрын
You can move the clamp on the transducer so that is not a problem. It's a pretty slick unit I will say that it is nothing like the LVS 34, its more like an advanced flasher in the sense that you can see individual fish, which way they are swimming etc. The livescope is still king, but as far as being mobile and jumping around, this was amazing!
