How much baking soda to distilled water do you use? Thanks great video
@davefman19842 жыл бұрын
Baking soda will neutralize vinegar, not baking powder. Soda reacts to acid and neutralizes it. Powder contains acid and alkaline together in the same mix in the form of baking soda and cream of tartar. Not sure what the neutralizing ability of baking powder would be. I do a lot of baking and am familiar with the differences between the 2.

I mix a small amount of baking powder in with the vinegar, it causes a fiz, and it helps blast the rust off. My tank was really bad. it's a 60 year old bike, that has not been on the road since 1990. it's working wonders. i am onto my second application. I think it will take 3 application total to clean it.

I am about to start this process. . Looking into a tank that has been coated before*..and sat empty after that for 6-10 yrs and yep..muchu visual rust visable in the bottom with decayed red gas that smells like turpentine.. .So I am thinking this may take some viniguar as well as some fish gravel and shake,shake, shake..for a couple of days..and then shake the fish and gravel out.. maybe a few times more..then mix the baking soda to neutralize the viniguar. .and the distilled to pull out any other stuff as a rinse until clean. .then maybe coat the tank with gas mixed with two stroke oil..or gas stabilizer. .and see how it lasts rust free..without other coatings..

That issue with the rim and the rust,what some people do is during the cleaning process the turn the tank upside down and leave it, that way it cleans everyting.

After reading some comments: Consider, 'sealing' the tank inside, with an epoxy sealer. CASWELL brand, is best. Red Kote, cannot handle modern 'ethanol' gasoline. Follow instructions carefully, and use long rubber gloves, and a face shield.

Using de-natured alcohol (gas line antifreeze, methyl hydrate) AFTER the vinegar rinses, will remove/absorb/suck all/any moisture out of the tank. Put a litre in, shake the he** out of it, drain and let dry in hot sun, with ALL HOLES OPEN ! OK so please tell me, did you remove the petcock (due to the vinegar eating away seals) & if so, what did you use to seal the petcock hole?
@MrAquabug3 жыл бұрын
That is a good question! This motorcycle had been standing still for about 5 years with old gad in the tank. The filter which is connected to the petcock had deteriorated. Because I needed a new petcock anyway, I left the old petcock in place when cleaning the tank with vinegar, after which I installed the new petcock. I would be curious to hear from viewers how they managed to seal off the hole?

Why do we need to use distilled water instead of, say, tap water, if it just a rinse and we are drying afterwards ? And why do we need to neutralize the vinegar if we are rinsing it all out ?
@dntlss2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a chemist but from what Ive read you have to neutralize the vinegar with baking soda, water alone wont do it,then when you are done you have to coat the tank with some kind of oil etc, i think the distilled water is a twist on a old formula
@justinh.8019 Жыл бұрын
Old comment, but I believe because distilled water has been stripped of minerals which won't leave deposits that react with air as much like normal water does.
