I'm no Gardner, but the best thing I ever did is make a rudimentary map of my property and divide my outdoor areas into 7 zones, assigning a zone to each day of the week. Each day I attend to anything needed in the scheduled zone. After the first seasonal cleanup, it takes as little as 5 minutes to maintain each zone. This is soooooo much easier than letting grass and weeds take over and having an overwhelming cleanup after it's out of hand.

I spent a lot of years just doing the cleanup and work in my garden. Now I get my coffee in the mornings and do a "coffee walkabout" enjoying the flowers and the tidiness. During the summers I drink iced tea on the patio, enjoying it more while still assessing what needs to be done today-- My best tip is keeping two sets of clippers/pruners and gloves ready for front and back yard as close as possible (including a small bucket for deadheading and a few weeds here and there. I know if I have to hunt stuff up, it might not get done so simply.

I can’t sit either Linda because I’m so distracted by all the things that need to “get done”. I can’t stop looking for new sprouts from my dahlias or seeds I’ve sown. The garden is my peaceful and happy place! This year will be glorious (I hope)! I think my greatest tip is to NEVER give up on learning to be a better gardener. I stared gardening with my Nana at the age of 3 and have been passionate my whole life. Though there have been years and seasons, in my 61 years, where my free time was very minimal as a mom, wife, FT nurse, that I couldn’t do the gardening I do today. If anyone finds themselves in similar or painful life situations, gardening will bring you healing, joy, and purpose again. Take those times to learn and dream of the garden you would love to tend, even if it’s a small balcony or porch. Purchase or borrow books from the library where you can learn and cultivate the passion that was planted within you! I thank my Nana who instilled that passion within me as a very small child, and as a recent retiree, I now am cultivating the garden of my youth’s dreams. Thank again you Linda for your passion and inspiration. Never give up friends! 🪴🌷🌹🦋💐🐞

Hi Linda, you are amazing! Love your videos. I wanted to answer your question of the day. My best tip is soil cement with pea gravel tamped into it. Bunny Guinness mentioned it on one of her favorite tips videos. it is so inexpensive and looks just like a gravel path, but no rascally weeds. You mix the top 4 inches of your native soil with cement top it with a little gravel and either roll it with a lawn roller or tamp it with a tamper. I've had my paths for a few years and they are great. Cost about 15 dollars for 20 ft.

Zone 5b. My tip is to deal creatively with what nature gives you. I love tulips, but they are annuals here, very difficult to plant in our rocky clay soil, and eaten immediately by deer. I have planted them in containers to overwinter in my unheated garage, with inconsistent blooms that, even with spraying, remain deer candy. A neighbor has always had lovely tulip containers, however, and when I asked her secret she abashedly admitted that she sprays some realistic silk tulips in her color scheme with deer repellent spray and sticks a few in each pot with the real flowers. Apparently the spray lasts longer, and the deer have trouble isolating the edible flowers! Would appall some die hard gardeners but works for her!

I love sitting in my garden. My biggest joy is seeing our two Airedale terriers being out there with us and enjoying the shady parts in summer, or the sunshine on a cooler day. My husband and I regularly have afternoon coffee on the veranda discussing what might need to be tackled next and how quickly some trees and plants are growing. We also like to sit and admire after a day’s hard work😂😂 It used to be quite different for me, It took some time for me to relax a bit and not concentrate only on the jobs that needed to be done. So this is my advice, see your garden as a beautiful lifecycle , things come and go, really love it when it’s at its best and forgive it when it’s not looking so great because it will change again 🌱🍃🌿

I hardly ever sit in my garden but I’m going to try and do that more. My best tip concerns fall leaf cleanup and mulching: I get a lot of leaves in the fall and in the past I tortured myself trying to rake them all out, especially the large Big Leaf Maples. Now I leave a layer of leaves and then top dress with fertile mulch, so that I don’t see the messy leaves. The leaves decompose slowly, suppress weeds beautifully and I get that beautiful white spidery fungi that is so good for the soil.

Lisa's lessons from zone 9A. 1. To remain focused decide on a small patch of your garden and work on weeding, trimming, beautifying until you are done. Do not be tempted away from your focus. 2. Spray with windex to clean your clippers after you work on one plant. 3. If you don't have acres and acres to garden, be ruthless editor, if the plant does not perform, say good bye. its ok to change things and move thing. Hope this is helpful.

I sometimes buy not so pretty plants in the sale section as Lowe’s, usually perennials. As long as they can be trimmed back to some good “fo-lage” 😊 I can plant them. I’ve done this with purple sage and trailing lantana and have enjoyed my two dollar plants for years. I need to sit more in my yard and I’m going to use that peppermint oil mentioned by someone as a mosquito deterrent before the extreme heat shows up. 8a in Central Texas.

Sheila McDade in Chattanooga here . . . my tip for the QUESTION OF THE DAY is that I wear disposable vinyl gloves to do much of my gardening. Some tasks require regular gardening gloves but most of the time I find the vinyl gloves perfect for protecting my nails yet allowing me to feel the plants and dirt . . . if that makes sense. I buy boxes of 100 from the kitchen cleaning products aisle in Walmart.

Greetings from Long Island, New York (Zone 7a)! My old plastic bucket filled with any tools I might need in the garden on any day sits next to my front door. In it I have a few sets of different sized hand pruners, a folding hand saw, my Hori Hori knife, gloves, a baggie with plant labels, a garden marker, pencil and pen, scissors, flexible plant ties, twine, insect repellent, and a small notebook that I use to record tasks to be accomplished and other pertinent information. As I’m planting, I toss plant labels into the pail to be filed later. Since the pail is chock full of tools, everything stands upright making it easy to grab what I need. Having a handle is also a plus when moving from bed to bed. Another tip is to I “double up” your pail with a second pail ( one inside the other) to be used for weeds.

We started our garden a year and a half ago and did the hard scape, which I love to do. Plants I’m just starting and experimenting with some of the things I’ve read about in your amazing book! As a matter of fact friends and I went to a an herb Farm today and found things that I have only read about but have never seen! We have quite a bit of seating in our garden and birds and pollinators. My hubs and I sit out every afternoon about 3 o’clock and have a cup of coffee. If I see something that needs to be tweaked or deadheaded I jump up and do it. He says you can’t even enjoy a cuppa coffee… Little does he know how much fun I have popping up and down looking and dreaming and fixing🥰🥰🥰 One of my favorite tips is probably more for young gardeners with young children. Someone once told me to have a bright red washcloth in my emergency kit. If mom or child gets cut or scratched and there’s blood, the washcloth absorbs the blood and no one panics! Brilliant!

I am guilty of not sitting in my garden as well. I always see a weed that needs to be pulled. This year I am making an effort to go out and sit in my swing and appreciate what I have created. Zone 9b central Florida. I take time every day to enjoy my garden beds without any qualms. There are always things to do but I put on my "rose colored glasses" and just enjoy the birds, flowers, butterflies etc. Working in the sun on warm days is not something I am physically able to do, so I work in the garden almost every morning then sit on my porch and enjoy the fruits of my labor. (Fortunately I am retired so am able to do this). My tip? I started doing my garden maintenance in zones as suggested by Laura on Garden Answer. Each weekday a certain section of my outdoor areas are taken care of (weeding etc) then other projects worked on after that. Started this last year and it truly made a big difference for me, keeping me from being overwhelmed. Enjoying these videos and the comments as well; always learning something new.

I'm in gardening zone 7a in the Upstate of SC. My gardening tip is simple....don't procrastinate and let your weeding or mulching or deadheading tasks get out of hand. When I delay, I dread the task because I'm overwhelmed. A little bit at a time makes the task more manageable and less daunting. Yes, I spend time in my garden just sitting and enjoying it. Over time I've learned that sitting still and enjoying my flowers is a fabulous de-stressor. I often have to purposely avert my eyes from the weeds or dead heading tasks that are calling out to me. I find peace in my flower beds!

8b Oregon and we have had a wet spring so a lot of garden enjoyment from the sunroom in the back of the house. This year I planted a small cut flower garden and when I prepped the bed, I cut up lawn bags and laid them in the bottom of the bed, wet them down, covered with compost, and planted my seedlings into the compost (poked some holes where seedlings went in). So basically, I am trying to use it as a biodegradable weed cloth rather than plastic...I'll let you know how it goes.

Zone 5b, my best tip is that the best mulch is plants. I always shy away from plants advertised as “groundcover” because too many of them have turned into really aggressive pests in my gardens (vinca, euonymus) but I do try to incorporate low-growing mounded perennials like aromatic aster, purple poppy mallow, and coral bells as understory plants. The small spaces left between them are the perfect spots for self-sowing annuals and biennials.

I sit in my garden ever morning and again sometimes in the evening. I love being out there. I live in far west Texas and it’s very difficult to grow anything that isn’t native because of the dry heat and burning sun. I mostly do containers but I have a little flower bed. I’m trying to green it up a bit. Mostly I plant morning glories, Bougainvillea, purple fountain grass and sweet potato vines. I love planting vinca because they flower so much and love the sun. My very inexperienced gardening tip is to check on your plants daily and keep up with deadheading and watering. Also, reused your coffee pods as drainage at the bottom of pots.

I tend to see all the little deadheading projects and things when I try to relax. Drives my spouse nuts..:) My tip is to not be concerned or feel bad if you can only do one small task at a time in the garden. Due to time constraints or age or physical limitations. I have a large garden with several beds and probably took on too much when we moved here in late 2020. We are in zone 5B in Southern ME. I am 63 and not in great shape. I'm working on it.. :) And I have an ankle injury. I got very nervous starting to see spring arrive but I am trying to just do one small task at a time. No judgements on myself. Today I am raking up some leaves to put in a black garbage bag to turn it into compost for next year. Then tomorrow or the day after will continue the clean up. I use a garden stool to sit on as no kneeling for me! :O But I don't worry about what people think. It will all get done. We can't all be Laura from Garden Answer. What she does in a day would take me about a month@ lol

I do sit in my garden or on my patio... I enjoy my morning coffee as a peruse around the camellias... I put in two camellias yesterday to replace the red top 14 year which had died.... I also bought two little boxwoods... put them in containers on the side of the patio where the steppingstones leading off into the yard...

Every time, EVERYTIME I sit in my swing to look & enjoy my garden I see something that I need to do as small as pulling a weed to getting a new idea. BUT during the time I’m working in it, I do stop & looking around to admire it & the sounds of birds singing or bees buzzing. Enjoyed this video Linda!

Central Mississippi in zone 8a/b. I work hard in my garden but i do stop and sit to enjoy it. Sometimes it is sheer exhaustion and sometimes to assess what I have done and need to continue to do. I posted an idea that I am working through on LVI this afternoon on how I am trying to organize how I care for my plants. It promises to make a difference in the end result.

Yes I do sit and enjoy what God has blessed me with. I spend time in prayer outside every morning, before I work in my garden. That helps inspire me with my yard. After all that I turn to your videos on Utube.

Zone 7a - OKC as well, just found out about your channel this week from a co-worker! Can’t sit still in the garden because the pup wants to play ball at all times. My biggest piece of advice is to use the resources around you. The extension offices nearby your local area will have tons of info on the best plants and practices as well as the need to know stuff for each year. (For instance last year saw an increase in army worms in okc and the OSU-OKC extension released info on how to deal with them) There are also garden centers (such as the one I work at on the north side of okc) that have evolved with technology to allow customers to send in pictures of the plants to get advice without leaving your home.

Zone 9. I sit down and instantly start commenting on the work yet to be done. If we have guests I don’t jump up but keep making mental notes of what there is left to do. Best garden tip for desert gardening 👩‍🌾 have your own personal small compartmentalized tool box with all your drip irrigation supplies (various sizes of emitters, hole punch for poly, a little spaghetti..1/4 inch tubing…goof plugs…the whole shebang) and carry it with you as you peruse your garden. Irrigation is vital in a desert garden and knowing the basics of drip irrigation repair and maintenance saves money and certainly saves plants.

"Off with their heads" Haha. Zone 6b Kansas! I love to just sit in the garden. I have a rather young property though, so there is not much to do yet. One day I hope to have a beautiful, lush and FULL garden!

My tip for zone 4 - Central Minnesota. Don’t plant tender annuals until after Memorial Day, since we almost always get hard frosts in mid-May. I know how tempting it is to want to plant with all of the color at the garden centers, BUT it is worth it to wait.

Hubs and I sit on the veranda overlooking the front garden every morning. (Not to say, I haven’t been caught gardening in my pj’s on the weekend). Then in the evening sit on the back deck overlooking the garden with a glass to unwind from the day. We have many sitting areas in the garden and people always ask when we have time to sit. 😁 zone 3.

Yes I often sit in the garden if the sun is out, always with a cup of tea or coffee. I always have something in flower to admire on my porch, even if it’s just a pot of flowering rosemary! I only have one tip. If you see a weed just pull it out! (From Melbourne, Australia)

Zone 6: I have two tips: First, don’t overthink; you learn from growing a garden, not the other way around (you don’t have to be an expert before you start). Second, ask for help and help others; especially in spring when there’s a lot to do, trade a day of helping someone else with a day of them helping you. It’s such a friendly way to get more planting done and you learn from each other.

Ok your attire is getting closer to how I always look in the garden, Super, duper work casual. Although, i love seeing whatever you r wearing in the garden. Yes, i often sit in the garden. That is why I have a bench out there. My tip is to plant a combination of herbs on my patio, so really close to my kitchen so the herbs are easily accessible for cooking.

I agree with you, I am working smarter this time and instead of being in the garden half of the day and getting sunburnt; I am now starting early in the morning and finish by 9:30, before the dreaded 10 am Sunlight. I also bought a 50% UV blocker wide brim hat after seeing yours (thanks) and my work is so much more productive than ever. I find that I am getting my gardening done and have more time for my indoor activities.

You reminded me to put my ownership label on my tools! I help our garden club in member’s gardens along with other members and tools can sometimes “get lost”. As for sitting…I love to sit at the end of day…perhaps with my beverage of choice🍷and reflect on my work, admire the gardens and prepare my list of things to do!

I never thought about sitting in my garden and just enjoying all the beautiful plants like you when I walk about I'm always picking a weed or deadhead something pulling something or thinking about what I need to do !!!! we should just sit and be quiet in our gardens that we've worked so hard ..... My one garden to do is to try to do something everyday even if it's only a few minutes at a time

Best garden tip: as I have aged big bags of mulch, potting soil, compost, gravel etc. are very heavy to move around in the yard. When I purchase I have the young men at my Lowe’s lift it into my car trunk. When I get home I pull it from my car and drop it onto a plastic sled that I have a rope attached. Then I can pull it anywhere in my yard. I literally don’t lift any heavy bags any more. I, too, have great difficulty sitting down and enjoying my gardens… there is always something to be done and something I see that needs attention. I need to stop, sit and enjoy more!

I also use a plastic sled, but when I’m pulling weeds because it’s closer to the ground than a wheelbarrow. When I get gravel, I leave it in the trunk and scoop it out from there. 😜

I do sit in my front garden. I find that it’s very relaxing due to the fact that it’s the most managed space so there’s nothing that makes me feel like I need to get up and “tend to”. My personal tip would be to put the plants that need less water and care the farthest from the house. The plants that need to be watered more often, closer to the house. Makes it so much easier to care for them. And lastly, I loved the article on BHG!

Ohhh yes, I sit in my garden. I hung a swing on the patio where I can see the whole backyard and dream up my next projects! Best tip - automatic drip tube watering. I could NOT garden without it just south of Nashville in zone 7b. We get way too much rain in the spring and then it gets hot and dry (but still humid) for a lot of the summer and fall. I’d be watering all day long without the drip system!
