@@TryItWithTim Do you think it is the mic being overloaded or did it clip the recorder? I'm having trouble finding a mic that can handle the high spl of my Ducati and wind.
@TryItWithTim
@TryItWithTim Жыл бұрын
It’s a combination of things. I find that mic placement is important make sure it’s pointed towards your mouth. For the mic volume on the recorder I find that between 5-7 gives me good audio. When your speaking, speak in normal voice that you set the audio at. Sometimes since it’s loud I tend to yell into the mic and then it clips. Lastly I would recommend a better mic. The current mic I have requires a small battery but the quality is great. I would suggest unidirectional mic over an omnidirectional. Also make sure your using the dead cat windscreen on the mic.

@@TryItWithTim Hey Tim, voice for just my own personal vlogging. I thought I would go for a relatively low cost start up with a GoPro 5 on my helmet. Now I find out to use an external mic, to get better sound, I need to get a GoPro external mic adapter. The $50 is a bit of a pain...but the thing is HUGE, Comparatively speaking to the Hero 5.
@TryItWithTim
@TryItWithTim 4 жыл бұрын
Nice, I use to have that set up as well with the adaptor and then you need to get a special cage to house the go pro and adapter. You can also just use double sided adhesive to stick adaptor to helmet. The adaptor is good if you want convenience, you won’t have to worry about syncing your audio just hit record. The H1N recorder is good because it lets you dial in your settings but at the same time takes a little extra time to sync, but also your helmet won’t be so bulky. You can also use the recorder to capture engine noise and other things. I have a GoPro 8 as my main and the great thing about that is there is a media mod accessory that allows you to plug in a 3.5 mm directly into it.

Hey! I have a question, generally, on long rides we keep GoPro turning off and on according to the scenery or need... so what do you do in a situation like this? do you keep the audio recorder turned on and record the whole time riding or do you keep the recorder turned off and on?
@TryItWithTim
@TryItWithTim 2 жыл бұрын
Great question ! I’ve run into this issue and the last long trip this is what I did. I left the recorder running and Once it got scenic I would start recording with the gopro. I would then open and close my helmet visor to give me a good sound to sync to. The other alternative would be to turn the audio recorder on and record same time as gopro but that takes more moving around. But using the visor as a syncing sound worked out. Hope this helps

Good video-thank you. I just bought a zoom h1n. I've been experimenting but my voice still sounds "jumpy" to me. I have used the same settings you're using and I have found the best placement is clipped on the front inside the helmet pretty much in front of my mouth. I sound "nervous" like my voice is jumpy. To me, it doesn't even sound like me at times. It's weird.
@TryItWithTim
@TryItWithTim Жыл бұрын
Nice i need to try that location! As for the jumpy voice it could be the vibrations from the bike or the wind coming in. Also try annunciating more and exaggerating your mouth movements and lips when you speak in the helmet. I find that this helps because if you speak normal all the vibrations and wind can give it that buzzy sound. So “say it with your chest” lol

@TryItWithTim 2 жыл бұрын
@@ntonio1 Yea the zoom and microphone is my go to solution and rarely fails. There are always going to be better recorders you can purchase and also the microphone matters. I find a unidirectional microphone sounds the cleanest for voice compared to an omnidirectional. I think it would be too much work to run a double mic through one recorder. I think at the end of the day you either try to capture your voice well and if you want engine noise, record it separate. The motorcycle youtubers with the best sounding engine noise are capturing that separately. The next upgraded recorder would be the zoom h4n (great for exhaust recording)

@TryItWithTim
@TryItWithTim 3 жыл бұрын
I usually record everything from the start and stop it when I reach my destination or pull over to start/stop it. Other option if you must record while on the go is have the recorder settings all dialed in and place it somewhere you can easily turn on. Next have your GoPro set to start recording when you press the record button so it will turn on and stop recording right away and turn off with one push of the record button. So when your ready, start recording on the GoPro and the audio recorder. And you can use the closing and shutting noise of your helmet visor to act as a syncing clap. Hope this helps

It takes some experimenting to find the right location. But generally I place the microphone between the cheek pad and shell of the helmet (left or right side) angled towards my mouth. Most the microphone is stuffed in the cheek pad to protect from wind noise. Depending if you have an omnidiretional mic or unidirectional mic, make sure the part that captures audio is facing your mouth.

@@TryItWithTim Tim, thanks so much for your response. This video is so well done and easy to understand. One more question: Wouldn't it be much simpler to simply record the video, take out the ambient road noise, and add narration to your video in post production? This would eliminate a speaker wire, audio recorder, and having to synch? I am a noobie and use iMovie to process my videos. Do you ever just use voice over? Really interested in your opinions. Thanks!
@TryItWithTim
@TryItWithTim 3 жыл бұрын
@@r12rtpilot Great question, I use voice overs quite a bit if you check out my videos. There is a certain element of spontaneity when your vlogging from the motorcycle and talking about the things you see as they are happening. And the time you save from just pressing record is time you will pay later when your sitting through hours of go pro footage adding in your narration. I think voice over is a good element for story telling and giving context, and vlogging from the motorcycle gives a different feeling. A lot of people use voice over only and combine riding footage and other shots to tell a complete story. At the end of the day both options will work. Hope this helps, but if you watch some of my other videos especially in the adventure category you will see how I switch between the two.
