Thanks for providing this really important nformation. I have some Yogourmet freeze dried starter sachets. Unfortunately the packet doesn't say powered or grains, but from memory, it was definitely a powder when I used it last. I have re seeded various batches and while it always turns into a yoghurt, it never quite tastes or looks like the original after a few batches. Your video has highlighted the reason why! Thank you. I will now start a search for some quality grains!

THANK YOU! Way back I used to gothe route of the 'powder' dairy kefir that worked, but they had a life-expentancy of two or three batches. Not ideal at all. I now have live water kefir grains rehydrating and will be likely relying on this channel and your very simple, clear, and no-nonsense explanations and directions for water and milk kefir. If the water batch I am rehydrating now work, I will likely also get a milk version going.

With the powder, you can make many batches too. Just like with yogurt. I just make sure I leave about 1 tablespoon in the jar and fill it with fresh warm milk and leave it on my counter overnight. In the morning, the jar goes to the fridge after scooping a portion for my husband’s oatmeal. The taste is just the same.

Thank you for sharing this information. I had purchased water kefir grains by cultures for Health (dehydrated) and followed the instructions word for word to activate them. They never did. Instead they looked identical to when I started (only wet instead of dry) and the smell and taste was not pleasant. I reached out to the company and they were nice enough to send me a replacement and highly suggested I use bottled spring water vs my pitcher filtered water that we drink daily. Honestly I don’t like to buy bottled water that’s been sitting on shelves in plastic and can’t imagine not being able to use filtered water. Any suggestions? I’d like to try this again but only if my filtered water is an option. Thank you

p.s. must use cane sugar for activation? curious: what's the down side of regular white sugar, or even brown?
@CleanFoodLiving
@CleanFoodLiving 15 күн бұрын
Hi, you can use brown sugar. The bleaching agent chemicals in white sugar can affect the microbes negatively which is why it's typically avoiding. You can also use other forms of sugar such as honey, maple syrup or molasses.👍🙂

I am interested in the coconut milk kefir. I have been making my own using a half a cup kefir and a probiotic pill along with a can of coconut and water to make 1 qt. I wanted to see what you would say about it. I do not have any grains for it. I just received my Florida Sun grains (active) in the mail and it says I need to use unsulphured molasses to help get them started. I don't have the molasses so do I put the grains in the refrigerator until tomorrow when I can get some molasses or can I restart them now without the molasses? Thanks.
@CleanFoodLiving
@CleanFoodLiving Күн бұрын
Personally, I used unbleached cane sugar (not white sugar) and they reactivated fine. You can also refrigerated the grains until tomorrow when you have the molasses (if you prefer that route since that's what the instructions say). The grains will make it another day👍
@1yerdy

@@CleanFoodLiving My neighbor had some unsulphured molasses so I decided to follow their instructions for this first time. I have noticed in your videos that your cane sugar that you use is light brownish so must be the unbleached cane sugar.

Have you tried doing a Google Search? Finding an authentic Tibetian grain is tough! The fellow on Etsy that is out is about the only one I've come across whose grains seemed authentic. I read of a gal on Amazon, but her "Tibetian" grains have terrible reviews so don't buy there! Very sorry I can't be more helpful!

I bought dehydrated kefir grains from cultures of health, three times and all three times my water and milk kefir grains did not take. They refused to grow and multiply and provide me with kefir for milk and Kiefer water. So I ended up buying milk live kefir grains, I don’t remember from who or where and they took off. I also bought live supposedly water, kefir grains, and they did it not multiply at all. And they came in a baggie. I don’t like that and I thought I was getting it from reputable source according to the Internet. So I stick with my kombucha, that I started myself-from store bought 100% no additives and created my own scabbiest.
