Hi sorry to hear about your husband. Vinegar every month or 2 works great. If your AC ever shuts off and refuses to cool, or isn't cooling well enough, turn of your AC and use a shop vacuum to blow out this same line, and it'll blow out a buildup of nasty mildew gel that tends to cause a clog. This has happened to me a few times as a new homeowner and generally will happen every 4-5 months if the vinegar trick isn't done. Just something to keep in the back of your mind if your AC isn't keeping up. Super common issue, 5-minute fix, and it's free lol.

Same here for me! I had no clue how to maintain the air conditioner. I just did the vinegar trick and voila! it seems to be doing okay. (2024) tomorrow I will use the shop vac to suction out from the outside. It's not the only thing "going south on me"... let's just say I am in learning mode! Please know I empathize with you , I am truly sorry for your loss!

Just moved to Florida in June…so, I am learning g as we go lol! That being said, “My AC Guy” has been ripping me off knowing how clueless I am about AC maintenance, particularity the drain clean out. Got fed up with AC shutting down every 30 days so I found your video.: added the vinegar, waited about 5-10min and magic happened! Started draining like a champ! I will still blow the drain pipe out with compressed air to get rid of the nasty slime but using vinegar to prevent this from happened is priceless! Thanks for sharing!

Hello from sugarland, we got a whole new HVAC system installed about a year ago. Just went up to do routine maintenance and noticed there was not a cap on top of the drain pipe, definitely will be adding one as there was dust and spider webs on top of it. Also when we bought our house, the last owner never did any maintenance and the old pipe was completely clogged with hard mold and dirt. The water was going to the overflow pipe because it was so clogged smh. Routine maintenance is key ppl!!!!

I do this annually when I clean out my sink P traps. Your primary AC drain line likely drains into one of your sink drains. I undo that rubber tube and take a toothbrush and dig out all the gunk. Then pour the vinegar in the attic and wait for it to all drain out. Nasty job but feels good once done. Just did mine 20 minutes ago.

This is just a question and I'm just trying to learn how to best maintain our A/C unit. I was told to never use bleach, since it can actually rust out the coils in your unit. I work for a company that monitors vacation homes and rentals for owners, who are gone. I actually reported a problem with an A/C unit that was leaking and there was a substantial amount of rust coming out of the A/C. Do you know whether this is true or does anybody here know why rust was leaking out of the A/C? For the record, once I report an issue a lot of times, I don't know what caused the issue, our company does not disclose that information. Thanks

It didnt look like you had a vent after the p-trap on your drainline. After the p-trap there should be a tee with one side sticking up and a piece of pvc higher than the drain ports on the system without a cap. The p-trap will be filled with water so think of a straw with your finger on the end. The secondary drain that goes into the pan underneath should also have a p-trap

Once a month , if you can do it why not , but once a year cleaning with that recommended mix would be good enough , and I would let it sit for a few minutes and flush with a couple of gallons of a clean water and than turn back on the AC . The new system fortunately has a safety future , if the drain is clogged , the AC would keep shutting off itself to prevent overflow and water damage to the house . This routine cleaning is even more recommended on older systems with no safety switch!!

I have a very long drain pipe as my air handler is on the second floor too, and it zig zags south and then goes back north, then downstairs to a gooseneck. I used my shop vac last week as the a/c kept cutting off and there was standing water in the overflow pan underneath the handler. I dumped a whole bottle of vinegar down it. I waited. Then I dumped a lot of water down. It was good for about a week and tonight I had the same problem. So I just poured water down it as it's dark outside and I don't like it when I can't see out there. I sucked out the water, over a gallon, and the a/c came back on. I'll get some more vinegar in the morning to dump down it. I must have a clog in there. Some gunk came out when I put the water in. I guess the very long drain tube is not helping.

Our ac guy recommended 1 cup of 30% vinegar once a month after our big clog. We haven't had a clog since.

What if you do this when the AC is on?
@postingid3214
@postingid3214 2 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking the reason to let it sit for 30 minutes is so that the vinegar can attack any possible algae/mold build up. If the A/C is on, then condensation will clear out the vinegar instead of letting it sit and do it's work. If you have copper lines anywhere in the drain line, I'd refrain from using bleach. My system is copper under the house, but PVC up from the floor to the unit. Therefore I use vinegar. ~disclaimer: I'm a homeowner, not an HVAC tech.~

@@postingid3214 thanks for the response, and that makes sense...and thanks for the heads up with using vinegar, as my Lennox does have copper lines

I had any AC guy come out and drill holes in the cap where you poured the vinegar. Is that recommended?
@craigf2137
@craigf2137 3 жыл бұрын
If its an air handler than you need the cap. Since the blower is "above" if you were looking at it standing up. The blower sucks air through the coil. The cap prevents air from getting sucked into the drain preventing proper draining. A gas system blows through the coil so you want a little air to blow into the drain to help push the water out so no or vent cap on a gas system. If its a Trane air handler than it depends on the system as they've been moving the blower "below" the coil on some of their air handlers.

The vinegar is an acid and will eat your drain pan also. I've placed a gate valve on the output of the drain line and close it when I'm flushing the unit, therefore no vinegar or bleach gets back into the pan.
