Journey to the Chateau

Жыл бұрын

In this week's "Friday at the Chateau" video, Patrick cleans the tarnish (oxidation) from copper pots, and compares different methods with both a household and a commercial product.
This is the second video in a new series called "Friday at the Chateau" on the "Journey to the Chateau" channel. In this series, Patrick and Stuart will be sharing short videos that they release every Friday from Château de Colombe which feature a single topic such as: cleaning copper pots, cooking favourite dishes, repairing or upholstering furniture, napkin folding techniques, setting a dinner table, gold gilding, or any other topic or DIY project that you might find useful.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on DIY projects, their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).
👍👍👍
If you like our videos, please hit the like button on the video, subscribe to our channel, and use the "share" feature below the video to share it with a friend. It will really help us out. Thank you! 🙏❤️

That was awesome to watch Patrick. Years ago, my mother gave told me to use"Elbow Grease" on the bathroom tub and I had never heard this expression before. She actually gave me $20 and I went down to the local supermarket and tried to purchase some "Elbow Grease" and the shopkeeper thought I was trying to take the Pi##. Who did she think gave me the $20!? I was 12 at the time. I rode my bike home, most disgruntled with adults!!! lol

I love copper pots. I used to sell antiques and collectables. Vinegar and a little salt are less damaging to the surface of the copper. Although Barman's Friend is good, it is slightly abrasive so I would never use it. I was taught never to use pot scourers for the same reason. If it's more ornamental, I just use a regular brass and copper cleaner which gives a richer deeper colour.

Don't have any copper pots as yet, but loved both and thanks for the lesson. My preference is both and a microfiber cloth. The is a bit like cleaning windows and morrow with and old news paper, far superior than expensive window cleaner. Leave s everything streak free and when it's finished you can use it to light the fire or put it in compost or recycling bin. Love the tip thanks you.😁👩‍💼

Last week I too cleaned my copper pans. Experimenting with tomato ketchup, vinegar and salt and bar keepers friend. I wasn't impressed with the ketchup, made too much mess, the other two worked well but the vinegar and salt are a much cheaper option. Quite satisfying to see them oh so clean, for five minutes!!!!😊😊

Hi, Thank you for your vlogs which I always find real interesting as they cover so many different things you do at your chateau. I also watched Patrick making curtais at Jane's Not-Quite-A-Chateau. And as you talked about old houses being transported into small museums villages, I thought it would maybe interest you that there is such a nice museum village with lots of real old houses near Frankfurt/Main in Germany. Should you be near: its called "Hessenpark" - as we live nearby, we made it a tradition to go there every year at my birthday beginning of June. You can also go into the renovated houses, there are presentations on old trades, traditional bakery and 2 small restaurants. We spend the entire day there and wander to all the different house groupings as there is so much to see! They even have a fantastic giant wind mill there! Its lovely! Warm greetings from Germany, Chris

Interesting! I use powdered Bar Keepers Friend for cleaning lots of things, as opposed to Comet, which has bleach. I do wear rubber gloves, because the main ingredient is oxalic acid, and just use the textured palm of the glove instead of a sponge, and I don't bother to let it sit, just clean after each use. BKF will also do a good job on brass. What are your pan handles made of? BKF should never be used on cast iron. I bought my copper pots when Revere came out with the bicentennial set in 1976, brass handles, and it's still going strong. Your collection will look marvelous on the wall!

What is your recipe for the lemon and vinegar mixture? Sounds interesting!
@Cenepk101
@Cenepk101 Жыл бұрын
@@CathyMiller0711 I have a ceramic jug that I fill 1/2 way with white vinegar. When I use lemons, I toss them in the jug. As the lemons start getting crowded, I add more vinegar. After 3 weeks, I discard the lemons & strain the rest into a large spray bottle. I use it for cleaning my stovetop, sink, granite countertops. It’s natural & it kills flies. My house is a NO FLY ZONE. I despise them. Works like a charm.

Greetings from Tina and Penny Boston. Thank you, Patrick for showing a fairly cleaning east method. Beautiful pans even with their tarnish! Will you display these beauties in your kitchen? Or keep them behind doors to keep them dust free? My house is a dust magnet so all my pots/pans are in deep drawers. But to have pans such as yours! How could one NOT want to show them off??

Thank you; I will def. try the vinegar & salt...Have used barkeeper's friend often in the past and it is good for very old tarnish ie when it becomes like a sticky dark brown colour, but I find it seems to take away the shine from thee newly exposed copper. The vinegar & salt seemed to dissolve away the tarnish in front of our eyes on the video.

Hi Lynne. It truly makes the tarnish in no time. And yes, for the deep brown stains, one needs to scrub a bit harder. 😊😅😊

@@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 You can get baking soda in the pharmacie, bicarbonate de soude, and it'll come in a box about the size of arm and hammer baking soda in the states, much cheaper than buying the pre-packaged... grocery stores now carry it in some branches with the cleaning products and nowhere near baking.....

I have a VERY old copper pot. It is lined with a silvery metal, has brass handles and is so discolored it is disheartening…I tried to clean it with brass cleaner but it did very little…I now use it as a small compost bin in my kitchen, lined with a biodegradable plastic liner! …when it’s full it goes into the proper big compost bin in the garden…NOT that I want to use it for cooking or anything but I was wondering if it’s worth trying to clean it properly?
@JourneytotheChateau
@JourneytotheChateau 2 ай бұрын
Brass cleaners usually won't work with copper. We have our copper on display, and the tinning is still good so they could be used for cooking. If you have a place to use it even as decor, I think it is worth it to clean it. As an inexpensive test, you could just cut a lemon in half and use it on the copper like a sponge with a bit of table salt to see how it works.
