Neat. Wish I had one. The filter. I carefully catch motor oil from my small fleet of family vehicles. I maybe collect about 20 gallons a year. I filter it roughly thru a couple of t-shirts just to get rid of the big stuff. I mix 2.5 gallons of it into a full tank of diesel (34 gallons) and call it good. 2005 Ram 2500. 5.9L. I do have to change my fuel filter every 1,000 miles, but that takes me a year to travel that far, as it's only a work truck for ranch chores. I get those filters for $7 each and it takes me about 15 minutes to swap out. It seems to give the truck extra goozo. It does smoke a little more than normal and smell differently. It smells like I'm cooking motor oil. 😂 I've mixed and run it that way up to a 15% mixture, but I prefer to keep it at 10% or under. When my fuel filter is getting full I can tell by how it starts. It will delay about 1 second and start a little "hard". Then I check the miles and it's always around 1,000 miles, give or take 100 miles. Can't do this in the new EPA BS'd trucks. I wouldn't pay $85,000 for a damn truck either. It's ridiculously overpriced. 😆 Go 5.9L! Best consumer diesel the planet knows. I'll keep mine in the family for as long as I can. Peace...

@@michaelbenoit248 Yeah I filtered to 5 micron. First it clogged the 5 micron pretty fast, then the filtered oil would clog my truck's fuel filter way faster than normal..... Centrifuging takes way more out than filters can. Now I centrifuge the WMO without pre filtering cuz centrifuge will get anything the filter would have.

🤣 this little ol 5.9 24 valve legend, 2nd only to it's more reliable predecessor. Stock hp in the 300 area with 850ish ftlb of torque. Those numbers are repeatable with alternative fuels like veggie ( only clean so far ), clean oils that are near appropriate viscosity, or used oils that are filtered and treated thermally or by solvents to reach desired viscosity. If your getting build up in your chamber then you're not filtering enough. There are a lot of videos about this topic and to summarize them up I would say #1 is getting your oil ( new or used ) to the desired viscosity. This can be done with gasoline, diesel, or heat . Heat is temporary and is a overhead cost every second your applying it to your system. Gas and diesel cost money but work forever once applied. #2 Is filtration. This is where I intend to spend the bulk of resources available for the project due to its default simplicity. A centrifuge is a must but so is the need to build a system that can get near the same result with 12 volt or gravity flow. .5 micron is final req spec. #3 Is water removal. By standing in a tank or by bringing up to 190 and circulating. The time required on this step would vary but to nail it down you need a formula or process that can give you a control on which to go by. To do this make sure your mix is as homogeneous ( 100 blended ) as you can make it then take a 1 gallon sample or whatever significant unit u need to work for you, could be Dixie cups but then your entire process is measured in Dixie cups. Weigh that gallon before and after bringing it up to 190 f keeping the oil circulating. Take the weight right after you remove it from the burner. Once the oil has cooled compare volume loss. 2mls? 3 ? What ever that number is that is the volume of water that has been removed. And the missing weight is also missing water. This should give a very good idea about your water content and what volumes and weights you need to remove from the entirety of your batch. #4 the centrifuge, oh the holy grail of alt diesel and clean motor oils. This should be your second to last process, anything that your keen attention to detail and dedication to clean and oraganized work area and practice gets tested. From the centrifuge through high flow paper filter and into the final tank where you test against a control for viscosity and flashpoint. I save these two for last because they are the end of the line. If you can grasp this shitty post and understand it and you have the mechanical know how to pipe shit out of your house then you should be good. The only thing I can add at this point is maybe a better centrifuge and more cycles through it and the filters to try and clear up the mix so new vehicles can see through it🤔 idk guys bnb it this is cool shit. I am going to be building a on board system that holds 25 gal of fast filtered and viscosity treated with a 12v heater waste oil with a 12 volt pump inside. Pump runs waste oil through filters and into centrifuge. Comes out centrifuge through high flow paper filter and into a 25 gallon circulation tank that keeps it warm and moving. At the bottom of the tank there will be a low spot and petcock that will be operated by a timer, every few hours a little bit of water or fuel is let out into a collection reservoir. A half inch above that is a line to a secondary 35 gallon tank with a 12 volt heating element in it. ....

It can work to a limited extent - with effort. Been there, done that on a Mercedes IDI and a Powerstroke. The stuff does burn. the problem you have is the part of the used oil that makes it black - carbon. the carbon doesn't burn. It also likes to stick to things inside the cumbustion chamber. On a Powerstroke, it will stick to the injector tips and you have to pull and clean them after about 300 miles. Did that about 100 times - literally. The IDI engines are somewhat protected, so the problem isn't the same. But you will eventually have problems like stuck rings. Take a sample of the finished "black diesel," put it in a lab-type table top centrifuge, and spin it for about 5 minutes. You will see that there is still sludge left. the big centrifuge got a bunch of it out, but not all of it. If there is any black color left, there is still sludge left. BTW - if you add the gasoline before the centrifuge, the oil will be even thinner and will filter better. All of these problems can be dealt with if you are willing to keep taking your engine apart and clean whatever is mucked up. It was more cost-effective when diesel was over $4.00/gallon - not so much any more. Let me know when you make light-tan diesel.

idk about stuck rings. any diesel oil worth buying that is changed at regular intervals should keep your rings from getting stuck unless the cyl is washed and/or the rings are toast anyways, assuming that in either case blow by is causing the buildup. 100 times literally? idk man... depending on your particular mixture the base timing needs to be adjusted to compensate for the lower cetane quality (ignition delay). i run waste motor oil and atf in my 5.7 olds. i dont have smoke if i mix with a little gas in a roughly the same 1:4 ratio. i advanced the base timing another 6-10 degrees and it really cleaned it up. now if i run it on diesel, i have to back the timing off that same 6-10 (i have another timing mark on the pump that i use) or itll smoke under light load, the idle gets "herky-jerky", and gets really smokey under heavy load. (all clear signs of the need to adjust the baseline to compensate for the burn rate and ignition delay) the oil gets dirty at about the same rate, like any idi, its black after the first half hour of driving. power is the same, after the lower burn rate is compensated for. wanna keep the combustion chamber clean? i also run water meth (yes naturally aspirated) not for power, but to keep the soot from finding a home. its a 90-10 mixture, so the chances of detonation are minimized (olds 5.7 is a 22.5:1 comp ratio engine), and i share the reservoir with the washer nozzles too. i had a vacuum line for the egr valve that ended on the inside of the filter element, after i filled the egr ports in the heads, lower and upper intake, and ground out the egr pedestal in the upper intake, the hose became a nice (sealed from atmosphere, metered by intake flow) water/meth "nozzle". my idle smoothed out after the first 2 hours of straight highway driving on the waste oil. i think the injection pump appreciates the lubrication!! the engine is more than capable of steam cleaning itself. on a powerstroke with split shot injectors id imagine the pre shot would get the steam where you want it, then the rest of the fuel charge would reeeeeeally get things cleaned. idk if the extra steam pressure between injector shots could effect timing of the main charge or spike cyl pressures on its on though. to wrap it up, i think the stuff works fine. but im only at around 1000 miles so far, most people told me the engine alone wouldnt make it that far!
@andrewharrison96486 жыл бұрын
I’d be more worried about the life of the injector pump with those micro sized particles running through it, freshly made petroleum diesel has particles smaller than 5 or so microns, which works for a long time with those small clearance pumps, I don’t know how long a pump would last on poorly filtered black diesel. You should probably fit a series of filters in your final mixing tank before you run it in your truck.

I can attest to this I have a 1996 Volkswagen Passat TDI with direct injection. I use an open bowl centrifuge to clean my black diesel. I was getting the same thing build up on the injector tips after about 300 to 400 mils. This would make the car run like crap and smoke bad. I would pull the injectors and clean them then the car ran fine again for about 300 to 400 mils. I reaped this many time this past summer trying different thing to make it better but getting the same result. It just seems like the oil is too dirty. I live in Wisconsin and I’m back on regular diesel for the winter and my car runs grate. But I don’t want to give up on getting this to work, so next season I will try some different things to get it to work better but if anybody has some suggestions please feel free to let me know.

The major problem with recycling used motor oil is that you don't have any more additives, those are useally used up while the motor oil was in use. In fuel there are also additives against condensation (water), for better combustion, anti-smoke, anti foaming, anti-stolling in winter times, etc..... Those you are all missing, when you use recycled motor oil. In modern diesel engines, you will get problems with the high pressure diesel pump. Older engines are more forgiving. That Black diesel can always be used with a fuel oil burner for heating your house/garage/shed etc....

i discovered that adding petrol will make it a lot harder to restart after you left the engine hot for about an hour or two as the gasoline in the hot injector tips evaporates so does the fuel in the high pressure lines as they mostly sit in a hot spot in the engine bay. ALso thats a big strain on your inejctor seals. A 100% waste oil is startable with about 8-10 seconds of cranking even in freezing temperatures. In the end adding 10% diesel is enough for good perfomance and heating the fuel with engine coolant helps much more so the fuel atomizes much easier. In the end I have a question. I thought the centrifuge removes most of the dirt, so why is the waste oil still black

Too bad diesel generators are too expensive for us regular folk, so that black diesel can power them. I could probably burn motor oil in a preheated wood gasifier and power the gasoline generator though.

how dirty is the diesel....
@Pokeanoscat7 жыл бұрын
It is not dirty but has black ash that will settle in the bottom of the tank over a period of time if not in use causing it to smoke when the tank is almost empty. To clear it up, just add regular diesel and it will gradually mix and you can flush it out. I let my Dodge sat for 6 months and it started right up. I had a half tank. It ran fine until I got almost empty and then when I started it, the engine would smoke until I added more regular diesel and it cleared up.

Problem is, the cost/benefit ratio. You are maybe saving $50 a year, but risking needing $5,000 in work to the filters, pumps, and injectors. You would have to do this for 100 years with at most one overhaul needed as a result. Not good odds. Look over powerstrokehelp videos to see any diesels ruined fro biodiesel and dirty filters.

gasoline contamination of diesel for a common rail diesel engine, I dont like this idea.
@TheHillpeter4 жыл бұрын
When the first Gen Dodge with the Cummins 12 V from 1990 to `1998 the Diesel had started off with 50 ppm of Diesel . Now they have 15 ppm Diesel . The new diesel is what you would want to be concerned with. Because its a coolant for the older diesel. Thats why ATF is better to run in the fuel tank.

Yes you might remove most of the carbon but not all. If its black it still has carbon in it. Fine carbon will pass through fuel filters cause pump & maybe injector wear & even cylinder wear. Eventually may cause rings to stick. Don't do it.

I am a degreed chemist with an emphasis in organic chemistry. This is a bananas of an idea. This is not diesel fuel. Stop thinking you can create something worthwhile by simply slapping the adjective 'black' in front of the word 'diesel'. Diesel fuel is a certain distilled molecular weight range of hydrocarbons, also meeting other specifications for performance in a certain type of mechanical device. This doesn't look cost or time effective or environmentally sound. I love my diesel engine in my Ford truck, you obviously don't. I have poured a lot of money into my truck to keep it running correctly and hopefully have it operational for the rest of my life. You are ruining your engine by putting in poison.

A 💩 ton of effort and worry to get a mixture of "black deisel". Go ahead and run that in your engine thinking you've beat the game.
