Tattooing has become so mainstream that there's no shock value anymore unless you're tattooing your face or head. Also because it's mainstream, a lot of people see it as a fad or something everyone's doing because everyone else is doing it. That way they can say "Look, I'm not participating in this trend. I have restraint and common sense" when pointing to people (celebrities) with ridiculous tattoos. Usually when people make these arguments they are pointing to celebrities and bad tattoos. I've never seen anyone make this argument next to a full Japanese bodysuit lol.

Because thats actual art! The problem is in America most people and tattoo culture treats their bodies like math homework and the tattoos random doodles. They end up with a bunch of random sh all over their entire bodies that doesn't look good isnt cohesive and doesn't go together. Instead of just waiting and saving up and treating tattooing like the art it is and the body like the canvas it is and getting one big masterpiece. And I just don't see anyone talking about it or telling this to young people who want tattoos. It will look if you just get a bunch of small tattoos there's no cohesion nothing goes with anything else. You just look like algebra homework. You might as well tattoo that S on yourself. But if you have nothing except one big masterpiece then literally even people who don't like tattoos can recognize that it's art and it's beautiful.

The ritualistic nature of tattoo, the transformation in appearance as well as getting through a difficult session by utilizing prayer, meditation, and breathwork this is the appealing nature of tattoos for me. This is great. Love your comments. Just want to say, I'm a 62 year old, retired woman with a master's degree and 2 undergraduate degrees - and no criminal record. I've always been so intrigued by tattoos (honestly it started with some of my favorite rock and punk bands and some of their tattoos). I had a few, small, discreet (and not very good) tattoos when I was in my 30's. After my parents passed away (they would have LOST THEIR MINDS if they knew I was tattooed!!) and especially when I started working for myself (in my 50's), I started going a bit wild with tattoos. I have two sleeves - one is 2/3, the other is 3/4, my lower legs are almost completely covered (I just got a beautiful gap filler yesterday). I don't have any hand or neck tattoos - and probably never will - it's just not for me, but I don't judge others getting them (unless they're just bad! 😅). I plan on getting a back piece (almost the entire back) before I'm too old and my skin is just not in good shape for it - which means VERY soon! I now live in Portugal and found a wonderful neo-traditional artist right in the town I live in (Johnny Domus). I've gotten about 3 fairly large (whole shins, whole calfs) tattoos from him already and plan on getting more. I'm really not trying to brag, just saying that not all old(er) people are anti-tattoo or against body mods. I'm just fascinated by the art form and love the whole process of deciding (generally) what I want to get then working with my artist on tweaking the design (he makes my original ideas into something pretty great) and then getting the tattoo. I only really don't enjoy the healing part! Anyway, if anyone wants to see any of my tattoos, you can scroll through my IG @iloverescuecats (sorry, the IG account is kind of a mess of just my life in Portugal). Thanks Kirk, for your tattoo videos. I love them. These people on this panel need to worry about much more important things rather than whether or not people are getting ink in their skin. ❤

Like Kirk said, there are some things in life that I do not understand. Tattooing is one of them. Having one does not change how I perceive someone. But personally I don't share the same concept of benefit others do. It's difficult to express how i can appreciate the art and the dedication involved in creating and wearing the art but at the same time have ZERO desire to participate. Think of walking thru Walmart and walking past things you know other people need and use. You know within those sections there are good and bad products. Traditional and trendy things. But I don't have a baby or keep pet fish or care if my Kleenex box has a cozy that matches my towels. But someone does. And I'm glad they have the choices available.

The funny thing about the elitist "low class" view of tattoos is that they actually used to be very common among elites. Tsar Nicholas had a tattoo of a dragon he got while visiting Japan. King George V had tattoos. And now that tattoos are more socially acceptable, plenty of elites (Crown Prince of Denmark, Princess of Sweden) are getting tattoos again. Really all depends on what it looks like and what's the placement. Some tattoos will always be trashy, sure. But as you know, it's been around for thousands of years.

It's just that when I was growing up most people that had tattoos were old sailors from WW2 that got them in the orient. It's not that I hate them, they just ick me out, but I am not slamming on them. I still like watching your show because I can understand where you are coming from but in my day most normal people never got tatts even if they were wire-out of Acid. That's an interesting perspective. I'm old enough to remember when tattoos were job enders in the 90's, if someone could see it they automatically thought you were a felon. It's kind of funny that before that they meant you were a survivor of war. There is definitely a difference in the type of tattoo a person gets and how many they get that reflects upon that individual and the type of person they are in the current day. Personally, I've always been someone that grows and changes with the times, so I love people just being free to express themselves more than they used to be able to.

Sounds abusive to me. lol If you're old enough to live on your own, do what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If you're not, just keep it in mind until you are out in the world living your own life. I waited until being 41 and had enough extra savings for it. I'm kind of glad I waited so I know my tatts will last as I age, but you do you.

I was thirty before I got my first tatt. I'm sixty now and they still look great. No, I thought about each one for awhile, No I don't regret any of them.

Personally I always wanted to be covered since I was a child. Also some of mine have been forms of acceptable self harm. People without a lot of tattoos done understand what it’s like to have a lot or why some people do have a lot

I’ll be totally real- don’t hate I’m here in good faith.. I have 1 tattoo. I had the intention 15 years ago to get more but I didn’t. I am happy I didn’t. For ME. I don’t want to speak on everyone else but for me I always enjoyed standing out. When I used to see someone who had a bit of art I would admire and check it out. Now I don’t even give it a second glance. If I’m being totally Frank I enjoy novelty. When something becomes so common and saturated I can’t help but not be interested anymore. Again don’t hate I’m being totally open and honest in saying that FOR ME novelty and being different is fun. It’s not enough if your tattoos are different than the next person because the concept has become more pedestrian. But I still have a side of me that enjoys watching the work being done, special art, the creative process so I guess there is still some value in that way. AnywYs to each their own

I understand the desire to get tattoos. I don't understand that desire being stronger than my reasons not to. I mostly think they make others look worse, but I can appreciate nice work.

Sky news is super right wing, so you can be certain what their opinion is on anything before even asking the question. I call the 'hard' left out for the same bullshit as well, the point being, it isn't worth wasting your time on their viewpoints or opinions on this sort of shit.

Yes key words on this sort of shit. They have some pretty ballsy good opinions on other shit

The only reason these people think tattoos are "hardcore" or some extreme thing is because they were raised in a western country with Judeo-Christian moral views. In plenty of other cultures around the world, for thousands of years, normal people have been getting tattoos. Not just criminals.

The Latte joke was stolen. I forget who said it but they said "a sleeve used to mean you were a killer now it means you're a chef." Or something like that

Oh, this guy doesn't understand why people get tattoos. EVERYBODY stop getting tattoos until this man understands why people do it! (Sarcasm) By the way, not that it matters, I don't have tattoos, but I love seeing people excited by what they love, and some people love putting art on their body. I'm absolutely no better than anyone because I have no tattoos 😂. That's so stupid. I don't judge people negatively for having tattoos and/or piercings. I also don't understand why people cover their body in ink.....but who cares what understand, the person who has to live with that on their body understands why they have it and that's all that matters. Also, I don't have to understand something to respect it. I love watching these videos. I love your opinions and expertise. Even if you don't like a style, you can still see why it's technically a good tattoo. I definitely can't tell the difference between good and bad tattoos. 😂 2:07 Killed me!!!!!

“I’m a clean skin” Lmao that was so cringe. They talk about younger people not knowing themselves but then she self identified as a “clean skin” 🤣
@Nitrohead1234 ай бұрын
And what’s the problem with that? She had no tats so therefore has clean skin pretty self explanatory if your not stupid

@@Nitrohead123the irony of calling someone stupid while also not being able to use the correct form of “you’re” isn’t lost on me, but it’s lost on you, because you’re stupid.

Full disclosure: I would have more tattoos. I like them. The stories are always interesting. The idea of a needle-ANY needle-I’m going to the floor. It’s embarrassing, but it is what it is.

For the cultural appropriation aspect, I don't think that these people understand what cultural appropriation is. Like let's say that I as a white woman got traditional Inuit tattoos on my face and then claimed it was my thing in the first place, or used them to give myself an "exotic vibe." Blacking your skin out, however foolish (skin cancer anyone??) isn't cultural appropriation.

I'm 62 .. I just got a tattoo on my forearm. I'm gonna say pandering to a Christian audience. Most of my friends have 30y old tats and still want more

1:44 I get what he is saying here but it’s important that if you use another cultures style you should do it justice. I see a lot of people “using other cultures” and they just promote stereotypes instead of real culture there’s a big difference between that and what he’s talking about though. Get Japanese traditional tattoos they are sick just don’t call an anime tattoo a Japanese tattoo that’s ignorant.
