CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) is riding in his motorcade when he notices a suspicious biker. Moments later, his caravan is ambushed from all sides.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the third film based on Tom Clancy's high-tech espionage potboilers starring CIA deputy director Jack Ryan. Harrison Ford, returning to the Ryan role after his first go-round in 1992's Patriot Games, is assigned to a delicate anti-drug investigation after a close friend of the President (a Reaganesque Donald Moffat) is murdered by a Colombian drug cartel. When Ryan discovers that the President's wealthy friend was in league with the cartel, the President's devious national security adviser (Harris Yulin) and an ambitious CIA deputy director (Henry Czerny) send a secret paramilitary force into Colombia to wipe out the drug lords. The force is captured and then abandoned by the President's lackeys. It falls to Ryan to enter Colombia and rescue them, aided only by a renegade operative named Clark (Willem Dafoe), with both his life and career on the line.

An absolutely terrific action sequence. Tense, claustrophobic, and pulse-pounding, this motorcade ambush is easily the best part of Clear and Present Danger.

United States Secret Service opening admits to using this scene in training new agents. This would make it the most realistic ambush scene to date in cinema history. The director says in an interview he blew it making this scene so good, that the ending was very anti climatic compared to this scene.

Just search how the real Bogotá and El Dorado Avenue looks in Google Earth. This doesn't have anything related about realistic ambush scenes. It's more a criticar about how Hollywood can recreate a french street of the late XIX century, but not a real accurate street? That's lazy.
@coolcat6303

***** Your entitled to your opinion but I thought this scene was plenty realistic. Btw, this movie was filmed in Mexico. So I doubt there's that big of a difference when it comes to the geography & the way the town/streets look in Columbia.
@T0ghar
@T0ghar 7 жыл бұрын
I think the point is that the ambush situation is realistic, not that it represents an ambush on that specific road. There are narrow alleys around the world where something like this could happen. That's why they use it for training.

This was definitely a great scene in the movie! The one flaw seems to be that while the blocking of the street and blowing up of the first 2 trucks seemed to be well planned and quickly carried out, there seemed to be an unrealistic delay in which the attackers stopped firing their weapons. Even before the other trucks started moving again there was a point at which the attackers seemed to be holding off for no apparent reason, other than for the movie to give the good guys a fighting chance.

Mine too, I esp. love it for its 'secret war' premise (very eerily realistic) and action sequences like this scene. And Ford really nailed it as Jack Ryan in this one. And I agree with Spencer Gresoso, there should had been more Ford-Ryan sequels. I do kinda wish they'd had made _The Sum of All Fears_ with Ford in it.

The ambush in the book is pretty different. First, Jack Ryan and Dan Murray are not there at all. Second, there isn't much of a battle. It happens a short distance from the US embassy in Bogota, and the limosine carrying the US Ambassador and FBI Director Jacobs are hit pretty much simultaneously with 3 RPGs (with a 4th missing). They all die instantly, though one of the ambushers is captured in a gunfight with police.

There is very little small arms fire coming from the rooftops. If I had organized this there would be a lot more suppression to fix the SUVs in place and then hit them with the RPG.

To this day, this entire scene made me hate mankind. Such brutality, insanity, and "instant death" weaponry utilized to attack non-combatants isn't even a step above stabbing a six year-old with a sword. If anything, it's twelve steps below. 😓 Some may argue that it's "just a film scene", but whoever is limiting their understanding of warfare like that has clearly never fired a weapon before, thrown a punch or kick, or RECEIVED any of those. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

Now see if they had one of those suburbans with the folding tailgate and pop up rear glass option the agents would have been able to unleash a hail of gunfire quicker.

Ryan wasn't there in the book. It's a great scene anyway though.
