Hey Milo. You are by far my favorite KZbin Pro. Two questions that always puzzled me: If the right leg’s function is to brace the backswing - then why not rotate the right foot left (internal rotation of left leg. Advantage 1: Now you build tension in the system the moment you move back, it’s like taking out the slack. Advantage 2: The torso can now rotate open much further without the need for the right foot to twist of the ground through impact, which makes low point controll much easier. Second question: When using a strong grip, why not make it SO strong the wrist is parallel to the swing plane and the clubface never leaves “square to plane”? (Hammer-Grip) Yes adress looks a littebit like Moe Norman now, but the power is endless and all you need to get good at now is anticipating swing plane direction. This only works with a 100% chest rotation powered swing, with an as you say entirely passive wrist/arm system - but it’s so much easier than any squaring-the-club-while-moving technique
@hansste7342 ай бұрын
Your advantage #2 for internal rotation of the right foot seems wrong to me--I can rotate much more easily and to a larger degree with external rotation (Rotating the right foot to the right). I do wish Milo would respond to your questions--He seems to respond to most the others even the silly ones but completely ignored yours.

I can't remember if it was you, but I saw this same tip on Instagram. I've been doing this the past few weeks and it's definitely made my swing feel much faster. In the past, I've always thought about "getting to the lead side" as pushing off my trail side, which is still true, but I never once thought about my lead side helping with it. Once I started doing it, it's made a world of difference. It's made me feel like I'm getting to my lead side and rotating around my lead leg much better than before, where I would sometimes sway instead of rotate. Aside from like, like you said, my hips clear out better, the push off the ground with my lead leg then transfers the energy through to the swing, and my swing just feels stronger. Solid tip with this one!

Great work Milo, I love your video . I never played tennis, hockey, or baseball growing up, so when I started golfing in my 30's I was a "pusher" and a big slicer. I practiced and got better. But it wasn't until I found what you describe as my lead side crunch, simultaneously trail side stretching , then reversing it, that foubd that "effortess" power. I played a bunch of other sports and I think this movement is on of the most athletic movements in sports, it took alot of practice to learn but wow, its brilliant and so is your explanation of it. 2 side effects I have seen. 1 - There is some added power to use in the arms and had as long as they dont catch up to the lower body. 2. I created so much rotation and lag that I don't focus on or worry about the ball.

Great video, simple explanation while showing the movements it really gave me insights to the swing. When you show the pulling with your left side and clearing I noticed the turning of your upper body is sooner and you can turn sharper around the corner. When you are pulling and clearing your left side your upper body is rotating behind your left foot, when you show pushing off your right side you are rotating even with your left foot or slightly past your left foot. Also in pushing off your right foot your right hip and shoulder go toward the ball so if you rotate you are over the top and can only keep going over the top and to the left. Also when you push something you cannot make as sharp a turn around the corner as when you are pulling and clearing. It is actually not how many degrees you turn but how sharply you turn in both directions. An amateur maybe trying to turn more than 180 degrees with his shoulders with no real benefit if he pushes and hits at the ball on the downswing, while a pro can effortlessly generate more torque and club head speed by turning sharper well short of 180 degrees on the back swing staying centered, falling on his left and pulling and clearing and making a much sharper turn around the corner on the downswing.

Great explanation of how the legs and upper body work in the swing. I've worked hard on improving my lower body movement. When it feels like my lower body moves better, I have a hard time squaring the clubface and leave it open. It feels like if I hang back on my right side, I have more time to square the face. Is this a common problem? Thanks.

Exactly my problem. I spent years with a bad left knee to the point where I stopped playing. Everything lower body was from the right and I tended to spin out to take pressure off the knee. I'm back playing with a knee replacement, so I've got a strong stable knee to work with now. When I get the kinetic chain right, it definitely feels like I'm pulling vs pushing.

I would comment that if you look at Justin Thomas' swing, which you just posted a 'Short' video on, you will see that if you are looking for maximum power, that YES, his left side is cleared and pulling out of the way, however, his right toe, is basically the last thing on the ground as it is providing additional torque/sheering force to the ground, like a tennis player, as his right elbow has fired, and he is pushing his right hand, like baseball pitcher throwing, with additional right hip toque driving his right side in a twisting counterclockwise manner - which is being driven by the torque being pushed into the ground by his right foot. In the tennis world, we actually jump off the ground because we push so hard with our right foot to create a sheering force that allows us to create as much rotational energy as possible - both from our left side/foot pushing backward and our right side/foot pushing forwards - this is something you see Matt Wolff do - yes there is lots of verticle forces going on - but Wolff for sure, and many smaller players like Justin Thomas, also apply as much twisting/sheering force as possible (Matt Wolff even broke a Swing Catalyst Force Plate with his twisting force). There are many ways to skin a cat, when you are as big as DJ and Keokpa, you may not need to access everything - but for us smaller players, the twisting/sheering right side adding additional rotational speed allows us to do what we need to do to carry that 290-yard bunker. Love your videos - you have become my favorite KZbin teacher - wish I would have found you years ago.
@MiloLinesGolf2 жыл бұрын
I understand using everything I’m 5’9 and just hit 205 ball speed which requires lots of efficiency and you are correct JT is pushing his right side forward but the bulk of the force was lead side. He gets over 90% force under the lead foot and use’s the lead side so much that his lead foot gets airborne. Not saying the trail side doesn’t play a roll just that the lead side has to get the work done for any trail side push not to cause problems.

@@MiloLinesGolf My broken 53 yr old tennis body, with no left knee ACL skiing knee, is unfortunately now speed limited to 165-170 - but early mornings I'm just over 150 until everything loosens up. I can still nuke a 7-iron 195 carry when I go full Matt Wolff tennis loop. It was actually the search for distance 2 yrs ago that led my brain to find all my old tennis actions & forces - wish I knew this 30 yr ago.
@wallstreetoneil2 жыл бұрын
@@MiloLinesGolf Milo, I would also like to add, the more I think about it and use my Math&Physics degree, that the more you do the JT hand loop, tennis loop, Matt Wolff loop, and get the club 'laid-off'/deeper, the more your can use the longer-moment-arm (in the deep-direction), to your mechanical advantage by applying the left&right foot sheering/twisting forces (like Wolff). If the club doesn't get as loopy (yes there are lots of potential negatives from an accuracy perspective), then the moment-arm-length will be shorter (in this direction) and there will be less potential mechanical advantage of applying these twisting forces to a shorter-moment-arm - and thus verticle forces will be much more important to maximize. The lay-off tennis loop gives you the ability to access a larger 2nd degree of freedom of mechanical advantage (I think this is especially noticeable when you look at Cameron Champ's incredible swing - and the amazing club change of direction movement that happens in a very 3-dimensional-loop way).

I've argued that pushing off the back foot is the worst idea and one of the biggest myths in golf. Some great golfers even say they do it, but they don't actually. Just because something thinks they're doing something doesn't mean they actually are.
@MiloLinesGolf2 жыл бұрын
I generally agree with that
@Pseudify2 жыл бұрын
I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Many people have compared the golf swing with a pitching or batting motion, including Milo. Every pitcher and batter clearly pushes off their right foot. If they didn’t their weight would not shift forward and they would have no traction on their left foot to rotate. But that’s not where the bulk of their power comes from. The right side push is slight and *merely* meant to maintain your balance and shift your weight - SO THAT the left side can rotate and generate power…IMHO.

You need to have the trail side start the whole thing, otherwise you’re losing power. I’ve tried using the lead side to pull the swing through, and I lost distance and found my arms were sometimes getting stuck behind my body. Best thing that has improved my swings look and overall efficiency: loading into trail heel on back swing, pushing off and feeling like I’m pushing my left hip back, THEN getting into lead side and pulling everything straight back. It’s hard to use the ground to generate force if you’re eliminating 50% of your power generation by not starting with a push off the trail side.
