The most complicated vowels for me are /ɪ/, /ʊ/ and /ʌ/. Other difficult vowels, yet much less so, are /æ/, /ə/ and /ɒ/. I really recommend nonnative speakers not to learn the lax vowels they don't have in their language. For example, a Japanese needs to learn additionally only /æ/ and /ə/. A Spanish speaker - only /æ/ and /ə/. A Korean speaker - only /æ/ and /ə/. An Italian - only /æ/ and /ə/. The problem is that nobody asks the best teachers in the country on what strategies they employ to get the best similar to native English pronunciation without getting caught in the pronunciation Black Hole.
