I’d much rather hear the negatives about a new vehicle that I’m considering dropping $60k on than the positives. I can sort through the negatives and decide what’s important to me and what’s not. Keep up to good work.

Appreciate the candor and objectivity in your reviews. Bought a 2007 5.7L SR5 brand new and I still have it. Just traded in my 2014 limited, that I bought brand new, on a 2022 Platinum 2mos ago. Had 250k on it and averaged about 15mpg. In my opinion, the new Tundra is a better truck in every way. It’s faster, quicker, more comfortable, finally has tech that’s at least up to par with the other manufacturers, and I actually really like the way that it looks. Plus, I’ve got 3300 miles on the odo so far and I’m averaging just under 20mpg. I don’t need tow hooks. Never have. And I don’t care about V8 vs V6 vs whatever. I care about quality. So far I’ve had zero issues, and I’m willing to trust in Toyota’s reliability record and my personal 16 years of Tundra ownership. Great channel and keep up the good work!

The whole “turbos won’t last” thing reminds me of the fuel injection controversies of the late 70’s and early 80’s when it started to replace carburetors. People were worried about the complexity and cost of the systems as well as reliability (because you can’t adjust or fix them with a screwdriver). While some of the earliest systems weren’t great, here I am after forty years of driving fuel injected vehicles and I have yet to have a single issue.

There are a few types of people who look up vehicle review videos, the first two of which always argue over anything that doesn't suit their goal. 1- people who are looking for only positive discussion to support their confirmation bias (typically owner of the vehicle being discussed) 2- people who are looking for only negative discussion to support their confirmation bias (typically owner of the competition) 3- people who genuinely are looking for objective analysis including both pros and cons out of interest or purchase research

I say this with all respect, but the reason the 2022 Toyota Tundra has fallen short of expectations, is that it was designed and developed in the United States...and not Japan. IMHO, if it would have been designed in Japan with that thought logical approach, it would be a better truck.

@@bobbbobb4663 I think that would be true if they made all of the parts"Toyota". They have suppliers just like everyone else. I believe that the wastegate issue has been fixed. If those turbos can last for 10 years then I would probably consider buying the new tundra.

Tim, I think you're missing the mark on some of this. There are no gas turbos in 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. Diesels have turbos, but diesels are built to incredibly rugged standards that gassers aren't, due to the temps and compression ratios seen in diesels. Look at the weight difference, that's all due to extra strength and material used in making diesels rugged and strong. Secondly, million mile semis and other trucks get to that point not because they're driven, but because the RATIO of driving vs startup/shutdown is much different. A truck that drives 1 million miles and is started 1000 times, is going to be in much better condition than a truck that drives 1 million miles and is started 10,000 times. In other words, city driving kills a truck but highway driving doesn't, because the thermal cycling (among other things) is much less in a highway driven truck. Same thing when you look at opening/closing the doors, seat and other wear materials etc, all that is far less in a highway driven truck vs a city truck. Finally, I think you're actually excusing too much with the Tundra. You can say "parts supplier issue" but all I see is that the truck needs work already at < 3 months old. Simple fix or not, I thought this was "Toyota the king of reliability"? As this Tundra release shows, Toyota's reliability rating comes from pushing old outdated platforms for years and working out all the bugs over a llloooonnnng product cycle, so the old Tundra was made reliable 5 years ago but new Tundra's are just as error prone as new Rams/Fords/GMs.

I've got a 2022 Tundra Limited with Crew Cab and a 6.5-foot bed. My build date was 3/22 and I picked it up on 4/16. 105 miles later my truck had been taken in for the Wastegate issue. The dealer took the whole cabin off the chassis just to replace the turbos and put it all back together. Was I bothered by it? Yes. Did I know it could happen to me? Yes! Am I so mad that I don't want the truck anymore? Hell NO!!! Did I write three top executives at Toyota USA my thoughts about the whole thing being that I own a business in manufacturing? You bet your ass I did. Will I ever hear from them regarding those letters? Probably not. Do I love my truck?.....YES!! The Tundra is a great truck. It drives amazing, it's fast, it's quick off the line, it looks awesome, it's comfortable, for a limited - beautiful interior with many bells and whistles, I get tons of compliments on it, and it's a solid truck! The gas mileage isn't where I would expect it, but I drive mostly city and not highway. And city driving varies a lot to expect 17mpg. I'm very pleased and happy I bought the Toyota Tundra and my ass isn't even getting paid to say that.

It’s interesting people think things are horrible with the new Tundra. I bought a 2007 turdra right after they redesigned the truck. I had a driveshaft replaced, rear end cover resealed, side mirror replaced, vacuum pump replaced, 2 radios replaced. When you buy a vehicle that has been redesigned and you get one of the first trucks off the assembly line there will be issues. The important thing is how the manufacturers handle those issue. I still have my truck 15 years later.

I test drove a 2022 Platinum and a 2022 Limited then a 2021 TRD Pro. I loved the technology in the 2022 and the seats in the 2022 Platinum. I didn’t like the head room in the 2nd row of the 2022 if you have a sunroof. I thought the ride and power was great in the 2022. But I badly missed the growl of the V8 engine. I felt the seats in the TRD Pro were very comfortable and the ride while not as good as the 22 it was very close. I drove over bumpy roads in the TRD and barely felt anything. The 21 TRD Pro doesn’t give you immediate power like the 22 does but in my opinion it more then makes up for it with that V8 growl paired with TRD Exhaust. I don’t know if the 22 Tundra will be reliable long term and maybe it will. But I know the Tundra V8 is bullet proof. So I bought the 21 TRD PRO and grin ear to ear every time I start the engine. For anyone else trying to decide between the current GEN and the previous Gen (2021). My house was built in 2013 and it’s a large house and a pretty big garage. When the garage door is closed there is only an inch Or so between the door and my truck. If I had purchased the 2022 tundra it would’ve been too long to fit in my garage. That’s a big deal since hail storms are common in Dallas.

I have a ‘21 TRD Pro. I’m not an engineer, but there is absolutely no way the tow hooks affect crumple zones in the slightest. Toyota cheaped out on its customers, just like they did by deleting the transmission cooler. And the only two improvements on the ‘22 interior are the drivers grab handle (also a prior supplied but deleted part) and the bigger screen. The screen actually looks like an afterthought that was bolted on. Otherwise, the interior on the ‘22 doesn’t look one bit more modern than the 2nd generation Tundras. I am a Toyota fan, but the engineers had many years to plan and design a refresh, and did a mediocre job at best.

Tim: I trust your reviews, I think you point out things clearly and it's up to us to decide if we wanna go ahead and purchase this specific truck or not. Now here are my biggest issues with Tundra and why I won't purchase it as of now although I need new truck ASAP: 1-Engine: New engine unknown reliability, No AWD option, inconsistently in regard of the promised mileage, (might as well keep the V8), any minor changes in the truck will drop the mileage even more i.e different wheels, running board, tow hooks, not the best aerodynamic when towing. 2-Very poor under-truck protection, if you go off road you run the risk of breaking major parts if you get hit underneath the truck, and good luck finding a spot to be towed from the front. 3-Infotainment system: lots of bugs, glitches 4-Cheap plastic and stupid savings for a 60-70K truck: cheap plastic that is not stable in the centre counsel, window rubber does not fully close the loop in the outside, , wind noise and air flow from the front door sides, no truck-bed-step 5-Gas cap has no lock (seriously Toyota???) 6-My biggest issue is I wanna customize my ride to better suit my needs, that means I have to pay alot to add/fix some of the above mentioned issues then add my own modification which will be very expensive. That is how I look at it and I would rather wait for refreshed truck or go to any of the competitors. Again thank you for what you do Tim.

I hope Toyota is taking notes. 1. Improve the interior lighting by adding more lamps say in the ceiling corners and under the dash. 2. Front recovery hooks 3. Redo the center console and toggle switches it looks way too cheap. 4. Rear bumper steps standard. 5. Their own multi-use tailgate option 6. Improved infotainment interface. 7. In floor storage bins since the hybrid battery takes up too much space under the rear seat. 8. Midnight package by blacking out all the chrome around the front grill and emblems. Add in stitched leather seats and cool looking wheels. 9. Remote start on the key fob. 10. Have a XSE trim. 11. Do something with the air vents. Paint them a matching dash color or black. Then you’ll have a great truck.

Tim, Great video and analysis. Owning a 42’ Cummins diesel boat and participating in forums on boats and diesels, I was introduced to the concept of engine age in years vs operating hours. In sum, a low engine hour diesel that is 30 years old is just to prone to failure as a high engine hour diesel half its age. In my case I have a 24 year old Cummins 6CTA8.3 that commonly seen in motor homes as well as boats. If operated within a reasonable power band keeping out of boost from the turbo it gets good economy and longevity. Operating consistently with 20+ in of boost you are talking a couple thousand hours. I’m at 6500 hrs and generally operate at 1200-1400 rpm below where the waste gate starts to close at 1800 rpm. In one of the tests TFL did on the IKE, they mentioned the rpm stayed around 2000 while towing his old Ford. With about 8000 lbs on the trailer, that was impressive and bodes long engine life since loading on the engine seemed to be low. Tom

The things that others dislike are less of an issue for me. For example, the Crewcab makes the back roomier, and to be honest, we don't have many back seat passengers. I don't do a lot of 4-wheeling and am not sure if I need the tow hooks. Am a fan of safety features and appreciate them. Regarding the tow hooks, the competition has to meet the same future standards, but they have them.

I love my new Tundra even though it has several issues. I have one now where the pasenger side mirror is different for the drivers side. This has been on all the new 2022 Tundras from what I hear. The driver side has auto dimming and heated, but the passenger side does not. The spec sheet says it comes with it. The drivers side mirror has the black lines that go around the glass mirror. Have you noticed that on your Limited.

Turbocharged engines have been doing work for a long long time now. In the rail, trucking, and maritime transportation industries we are conservatively looking at 50 years of turbochargers being used in duty cycle applications that are far far tougher to meet than light duty automotive applications. Same for mining, earth moving, and agriculture. All the naysayers can complain and moan about the horrors of forced induction via exhaust driven turbines, but they willfully ignore the facts. Nearly everything they: eat, clothe themselves in, buy as a finished good, power their home with, or otherwise depend on for modern life at some point was mined, tilled, harvested, and transported at various stages and methods with equipment using turbocharged engines. Somehow the world didn’t end.

@@dudeman5788 Turbodiesel engines operate at much higher boost pressures than gasoline turbocharged engines. Variations in engine speed don’t have as much affect as you seem to think, modern turbocharged engines use computer controlled waste gates to regulate boost, and turbine speed. The turbo doesn’t know, or care what the fuel source is that makes the hot exhaust gasses flow.
@dudeman5788
@dudeman5788 2 жыл бұрын
@@brendanreary9142 Gasoline is much more volatile than diesel. The boost on a diesel is typically very low: in the 5-8 psi range. (I know there is someone reading this saying "Hey, I've seen tractors that are running 40 psi of boost." You may want to look into that because it is not uncommon to have people mistake "inches of manifold pressure" for "psi of boost." Turbocharged diesel engines are typically large displacement, low operating RPM power plants. They run in a very narrow RPM range. Diesel fuel is atomized as it enters the combustion chamber and upon compression (with only residual heat) the air/fuel mixture lights off. The combustion pressures are very high due to the high compression ratios needed to ignite the mixture. Because of the high compression pressures, mechanical parts must be strengthened to handle such loads: connecting rods are larger, crankshafts are stronger, and pistons are bigger. All of this reinforcement means that there is a much heavier rotating mass, which is more difficult to spin at high RPMs, so diesel engines tend to be low RPM power plants.

Yes industrial standards under control loads with massive cooling Temps get 1,200 to 1,900 degrees… it’s going to break as a mechanic and those who work on them I would stay away from them. Less displacement and More forced air. It’s old tech so why now? Reason they are a maintenance problem

One major safety flaw , the side , rear view mirrors are 4-5 inches too big in height . They block out pedestrians or cross traffic at intersections . There is no advantage whatsoever to them being so large in height . Ive already had two close calls by them blocking so much of the view . Im waiting for replacement mirrors that hopefully they are 5 inches lower / narrower in height , As a side note these trucks are too big overall to fit through standard gas station car washes. I still love this truck , it rides like a luxury veheicle and the radar controlled cruise control and lane assist is great . I'd buy it all over again .

You have always been fair in your criticism and I wish all reviewers were as transparent. As a consumer you expect more from Toyota; it is why one pays a premium and gets less features. I currently own only Toyotas, but I had concerns from the spec sheet. Then, when Toyota pulled the media stunt and hooked the 2022 to an Airstream and the a previous generation to a box travel trailer with a curiously removed load/capacity sticker, they compromised all trust on this particular vehicle. And, I really wanted to buy one. As someone who tows a travel trailer over 15K miles per year and spends a lot of time off-grid, I have no concerns about the previous gen. Since that test, they have a lot to prove and have failed to do it so far. That Titan XD gets 14MPGs highway, but it won't go into limp mode because of a Turbo issue. Toyota needs to do better, and maybe re-visit that April fool's joke you had about Diesel. After all, they teased a Diesel last summer.

If it's on the internet, it MUST be true! LOL That's the sad reality of the world we live in when people don't want to do their own research. I watched multiple YT videos on the 2022 Tundra before purchasing mine, and still did so without hesitation. I went into it with my eyes wide open. I was coming from a '21 Chevy 2500HD that we used for towing a 5th wheel and no longer needed it. I looked at the Chevy and GMC 1500s and in comparison to the Tundra, they are a disappointment. Heated seats don't work because of the lack of chips available, so who knows when you will get that feature. The $250 credit on the window sticker is a somewhat half-hearted attempt to compensate for that. My 2022 Tundra drives and rides great, everything works, and I believe that it is an overall better vehicle. I couldn't be happier. To boot, my dealer isn't marking up their vehicles as we have heard some other dealers doing in other parts of the Country!

I prefer the 2016 Tundra. I wouldn't say the 2022 is a bad truck, its just the Turbo boosted stuff does not have the longevity that non boosted platforms can have. People are worried about that and the reliability I would say. Dont want to be replacing turbos at 100k miles. But I own them for the long haul, not a few short years and flip them for another. My 2016 Tundra gets 17.5 mpg average, just driving around not towing or anything.

I ended up selling my 22 Tundra after almost 4 months. For the price point a lot of the issues are just unacceptable to me. 1. The MPG - I get 16 mpg after putting 1700 miles on it, and my driving is 90% highway. This is even witj babying the throttle. 2. Infotainment- it's horribly designed/laid out, It's unresponsive, it does not save my presets/settings. I will randomly have to go back and unselect favorite stations and select others. 3. I get the loud wind noise issue on the windows above 60mph 4. Horrible turning radius - yes I realize I have the longest wheel base, but it's literally the worst in its class regardless. I won't even take it into smaller parking lots. It stinks because I love the engine and smoothness of the ride. I actually like the look, and everything else works great. The above issues just grated on me from day 1, and in today's market I'm getting 100% return and then some for selling it.

Until then I will look to you for your sage advice and opinions. Just remember “haters gonna hate”….just ignore those keyboard warriors and continue talking to your loyal followers. Ps. I almost forgot. You said name a first year vehicle that doesn’t have issues. I have had 2. Both were Nissan products. A 1989 Maxima and a 2005 Infiniti G35X…I put about 70k miles on each of them and I had a Bose speaker go out on the Maxima and that was it. So yes, it is possible. Oddly I haven’t owned a Nissan product since I traded the G35 in 2010 for a Lexus, which had a window actuator go bad in the first few months.

I think the problem is that the truck just isn't impressive, they didn't really make anything to be excited about. Yes it's got new styling exterior and interior but those are superficial things and opinion based. I get when you compare the new Tundra against the old, then yes there are some decent upgrades, but the old Gen truck was years behind its competition So if you start to compare it to the other trucks in its segment it just falls very short everywhere from the shrinking of the interior, to the increases turning radius to the narrower bed and countless other spots that's just missed the mark.

100% agree. Toyota only had to do so much with the new redesign and namely offer new powertrains given the tighter emission regulations reigning in the old V8's. Everyone knows Toyota for, value, reliability and resale value and who doesn't like that but quality and innovation I don't think are their strong points. I just don't see any real innovation in the new model or interior quality materials like in the Ram 1500 (and that interior is going back to 2019) or latest edition GMC Sierras. Seems too plasticky inside and as mentioned not as much head room as the competition, interior storage is lacking (no second glove box, no under seat rear storage in the hybrid models) no innovative tailgate to compete with the big three and no auto 4wd? At least put side steps for bed access like Chevy/GMC to make access to the bed easier. The info screen is huge yes, but it's not integrated into the dash very well. Look the engine options look great, more efficient and plenty of power and with Toyota's reputation of dependability they get the job done with peace of mind for folks I guess but I wouldn't get excited about a Tundra.

He’s pretty disappointed with those numbers and he has well over 5000 miles on his now. He thought that the front end with grow on him but he still thinks it’s pretty ugly. A couple of things Toyota needs to fix are the Grill and infotainment system. The grill is just too big, and proportionately it doesn’t fit with the body lines. The style of the grill might not be all that bad if they toned it down in size and tweaked the lines a little. Secondly, for the life of me, I just can’t figure out how a multi billion dollar company cannot get a large display infotainment system to function properly ? Frankly it’s embarrassing for a company that has some of the best engineers in the world at their disposal. Finally, they need to get away from their JBL sound system - It sucks…. always has been sub-par period.

I get that people in town and cities want crash safety safe vehicles. But as a rancher in the country I have to worry about pheasants, deer, other wild animals at night. Also we use our trucks to push things and hold up bad fences or portable pannels. So some of us need trucks that we can put big grill guards on. I'm a ford guy but I would take the tundra half ton if I could for a everyday driver. But I cant afford to spend that much money on a truck then not be able to put a big grill guard on it to protect my investment for the next 20 years.

Problem with the fuel filter gauge, which does not show the correct fuel level in the car. I only responded that Toyota is working to fix the problem. The first problem was not solved and the second one appeared, just when I was returning from the cinema with my children and my wife, the SRS Airbag System Malfunction code came on, and the display also did not respond to commands.
