I saw some of this blowback on IG from artists and vocal teachers in Europe specifically and their interpretation of the kickstarter information was incredibly disingenuous. I don’t know if nuance was lost in translation literally or subjectively but they were unwilling to engage with the possibility that TCV are genuine/sincere and included character attacks. The focus of their digs seemed to be on this study being ‘the first of its kind’ and that donations weren’t going to research. Watching the lead up livestreams where TCV clarified the kickstarter structure with feedback from the community, as well as looking at how 501(c)3s function and knowing how academic research in the US works (private funding gets things done) was more than enough to kick off any doubt about nefarious intentions. And all of this is online and easy to find with a bit of digging. The fact that results will be made public based on artist discretion speaks volumes about motivations. And then we also get a tonne of content. Idk. There are easier ways to scam/make money off a big audience than to rigorously explore, plan, and set up research on a niche interest that still attracts a lot of ridicule.
@OSborneCox2 ай бұрын
Id like to push back on the idea that “in the US, private funding gets things done.” That is just not true. Most research is funded through government grants through the NIH and similar bodies. The internet itself was funded by state money
@levischorpioen2 ай бұрын
They also just seemed to completely misunderstand the concept of crowdfunding. They were saying things like “1000 bucks for a vocal lesson is insane”. No one is offering a vocal lesson for a thousand bucks. You’re pledging a thousand bucks to science, and in exchange as a thank you, you get a vocal lesson for free. That’s why other crowdfunding platforms call these things “perks”, because that’s what they are: Perks of pledging a specific amount to a cause you already want to donate to. It’s such a dramatic misunderstanding of a very simple concept that I struggle to believe it wasn’t done in bad faith.
@rshdrply2 ай бұрын
@@OSborneCox I’m not clear on where my words imply that all US research comes from private funding but here we are. Yes most research funding comes from government bodies. That funding is still woefully inadequate to cover the number of worthy research pursuits that exist. However, plenty of research is funded by private, corporate, and NGO entities. In the case of special interests where grant (government) funding has not come through you look to them. And then those bodies then ‘get things done’, usually faster than applying for grants and waiting for them to be approved. If we waited for the government to deem something worthy of study we’d be long dead. And to trade pedantic clarifications: the internet came out of the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense, which is military funding. I guess TCV could apply for defense contracts if they could demonstrate military application for the upper laryngeal structures. Thoughts?
@rshdrply2 ай бұрын
@@levischorpioen Yes! That’s specifically what I saw in someone’s story. I messaged them to start a conversation to clarify that they weren’t giving lessons on the subject, etc, that it was all for vocal research and they ignored me and continued to post similar things. I saw the Facebook posts later. It felt like they took it as an opportunity to kick at someone they already don’t like in their space. If they’re so quick to drag someone and not engage to clarify then I give serious side eye to their teaching ethic/space they occupy in the community.

It genuinely baffles me how anyone *in this space* of vocals can't be at least intrigued by what's being proposed here. Half my life I've been preaching that these techniques take time, practice, understanding and learned skills that even when mastered we do not understand and often have to use weird ways to describe how to even start to make a sound. This is extremely obvious if you attempt, study or learn these vocal styles. I have NO idea the mechanics behind some of the sounds I can make after years of practice or how someone like Dicky Allen is able to just do what he does on command. To the average listener, it's either "Just screaming" (Which we know isn't true by miles) or to the average fan, some sort of vocal magic. This is all so exciting to me and I, again, genuinely cannot wrap my head around being a fan of harsh, expressive vocal ranges and just being hostile toward someone with years of trained vocal experience, that has been introduced to this and becoming SO intrigued and swept up by the styles that she wants to move the needle well beyond "It's just screaming" for everyone. Like Melissa Cross before her, Elizabeth is doing really cool things for art and people here and saying otherwise makes it feel like you either don't understand the intention on the most basic of communication levels or you're just simply a gate keeper that feels this is YOURS and no one elses.

I never thought that when I was very young and the "true artists or experts" laughed at metalheads, because we only knew how to make noise and shout, that they told us that "that" was not singing, that they assured us that our voices would be lost or broken, etc., a lot of prejudices and mistreatment that I personally experienced. I saw some malicious comments about the campaign and it also caused me pain, so I understand you, but I tell you that they will continue, unfortunately, there will always be people who think they are right and others are not, who when they see someone shine they try consciously or unconsciously to turn off that shine, that is how I understand it at least and I send you a huge hug. I just found out about the study, and I think it sounds amazing, and I support you. I do have a constructive thought to share, respectfully. I'm an editor. I think a lot about language and communication. And I think there is language on your Kickstarter page that leaves you vulnerable to a mixture of genuine confusion, uncharitable interpretation, and bad-faith arguments. It says, "Could metal singers be the key to curing cancer?" That question is set in bold on a line by itself, drawing a lot of attention. There is no clarification or context for it anywhere on the page, unless you count the brief mention within the original video of "killing cancer cells" on the list of things that musical therapy can be applied to. The word "cancer" doesn't come up in writing anywhere else. Letting the phrase "cure cancer" sit there without any explanation or context is likely to make some people think that you're making outlandish claims without evidence. Now, I think you're doing great work and making admirable sacrifices out of pure passion for the subject and a genuine desire to help people. And I thoroughly understand how easy it is to find your words misinterpreted in ways you never anticipated; a big part of my job is helping people avoid that. So I have no trouble believing that what you meant was something like "This research has a wide range of potential applications, and it can also draw attention and pave the way for more studies on related topics, such as using vocal therapy to help treat certain cancers, so we should dream big about the possibilities and learn as much as we can about this understudied subject." But... It's so, so easy for someone to look at that page and think you're implying that you can cure cancer. The words "cure cancer" are right there in a rhetorical question that's clearly intended to get people emotionally invested and make them want to donate. The implication is there and it sounds unbelievable. And of course some of this misinterpretation is the reader's own baggage. Some people trust others so little that they see a scam in everything. Some love to get angry and stir up trouble. Some read everything at its most literal and most extreme with or without meaning to or knowing they're doing it. Some probably found that page randomly, had no idea who you are, and didn't even watch the video. And I think the right thing for any of those people to do would have been to reach out to you for clarification rather than immediately making a lot of bad-faith assumptions and accusations. But people are reactionary and they don't do that. So you need to protect yourself. I think it would be a good idea to edit some clarification or context into the Kickstarter page if you are able to. And I don't know whether you already work with an editor or writer-if not, wow, your grammar and punctuation and everything are great-but you might want to consider engaging additional help with watching for this kind of thing in public communications that touch on sensitive topics or invite scrutiny. And any charitable endeavor is going to invite scrutiny because you are asking for money. Just a well-intended suggestion. I wish you so much luck and success with the Kickstarter and study!

There’s a growing trend of people being radicalised against science and it’s really concerning. Of course all research should be scrutinised, that’s the point of the scientific process, but when people just deny any kind of scientific research by suggesting it’s all some big evil conspiracy it’s really worrying. Thank you for doing this research and while it’s sad that you even had to make this video thank you for doing it so eloquently.

The more you look into what Elizabeth and TCV do, the more you learn, and the more you respect what she does together with her whole community. I've followed her for years and interacted with her many times. She and her team are the real deal doing positive work. With this Kickstarter they are expanding that to more of the world at large. We need to support people like her who have the drive and courage to make good things happen for everyone. I have learned so many new things and have been able to share what I know with so many people. Elizabeth and her community has been a very positive influence on my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!♥

It sucks so bad that a lot of non-profits get the flak they do. As soon as money flow is visible to the public, there's all kinds of jealousy, bitterness and hate that'll fester. 😔 You deserve the success, the non-profit does and the upcoming projects deserve it too. I hope things turn out well both short and long term! All the best from this one tiny Swede! ❤

Elizabeth I trust you completely, and I'm very happy to support this research. Though not a singer myself, I am hopeful that this research will help others in situations similar to mine. Almost 11 years ago now I became a paraplegic. I am paralyzed from the chest down. Though I was fortunate enough to retain the use of my diaphragm and breath on my own. My breath control is diminished. This effects my ability to speak full sentences without running out of breath. I had wonderful speech therapist that helped me learn to speak more efficiently by being conscious of where breath pauses come when I speak. Shout out to Katie Torstensen SLP.

Thank you for all that you share and for what it is worth I never doubt your reasons behind this project. You are passionate about it and it shows. Try not to let these others bother you. They are welcome to their own thoughts but they do not represent the vast majority of the people here. This will push techniques, knowledge, and also will create new questions to be answered. I am 26 years old and this is my very first kickstarter support. Ever. This project is a unicorn, it is about the music and artists I've been listening to for years and it is one unusual way to make the genre popular, beside the "wtf is that noise" I am already indifferent about. Thank you Elizabeth for the analysis on the Cattle Decap analysis video and for mentioning Travis will be part of the research. That already convinced me before all the actual promo videos.

As a long time viewer and backer, it's been an incredible and inspirational experience to watch the musical journey you've gone down as you've pulled everyone in together. This is absolutely historical and vital on the medical research front. For all of us to be a part of it, whether we're viewers, backers, or social media supporters, shows how important it is for it to be a collective endeavor for this to be a success. Thank you, Elizabeth, for taking the time to address all the questions, criticisms, and concerns that people have. The vocal minority are out there, but it just shows how important and personal all of this is to you and everyone involved. This is such a thoughtfully planned campaign and we cannot wait to see where this journey takes us.🤘

Elizabeth, thank you for your passion -- for music, for singing, for contributing to science, and for the betterment of humanity. Singing can indeed benefit us in ways that science is only recently starting to reveal, and you have outlined an area of study that few if any have taken on (the harsh vocals of the upper larynx). I applaud your efforts, and I salute your generosity. Some people are just in love with their own sense of cynicism. Pay no attention to them, they are always with us. Don't let them hinder the rest of us from dreaming big, from improving the world they live in, in spite of their efforts to drag things down. I expect someone amng them who loses their voice, then benefits from this research to regain some function, will quickly take advantage of it. But I don't expect they'll take back their demoralizing words. They got too much of a payoff saying them. Pay them no heed. Keep doing good. We're behind you!

People can be so completely small minded. The work that you are doing on this absolutely blows my mind. I got teary-eyed when I watched your video. I had a tracheostomy as a child that damaged my vocal cords. I can talk, but I have a very awkward voice. I cannot sing to save anybody, but I have loved watching your videos and you’re an analysis of how people do things with their voice .And knowing that somebody is out there looking into how vocal cords work and different things that can be done for them and with them just blew my mind. I see you. Thank you.

I think there's hope for you, though, Aly. There's been some recent studies being done out of NYU where they're using false fold and upper laryngeal structures to repair usage of true folds. It's still early stages, but it's being worked on. The fact that upper laryngeal structures for voice have barely been studied at all, and now with new technology that gives us imaging and data... I'm super hopeful that we may have found a niche that can be explored exponentially!

@@TheCharismaticVoiceI will continue to watch and learn. And absolutely cheer you on in this endeavor. But the original video and this video have absolutely touched me on a core level. I will watch as you progress in these studies and keep learning for myself. I may never have a strong voice- I have creaks and cracks and so much vocal distortion and fatigue- but I love learning- music moves me profoundly- and even before this new venture,your videos taught me a lot about vocal control. Haters are gonna do what they do- but you are changing the world and that is amazing. Thank you. You affect people more than you know.
