I've been there, done that, George! When I first started flying RC planes, I often found it hard to tell the direction/orientation of the plane. One tip I was told was that when the plane is headed toward you and tilted, push the aileron stick towards the low wing. If you really want to up your skills flying RC planes, get yourself an RC simulator program that has an actual RC transmitter. That alone increased my flying skills immensely! First time out with the real RC plane afterward, I was knife edging, doing snap rolls, inverted low fly-bys, etc... The RC simulator paid for itself in not having to do plane repairs.

Here's a little tip for George (or anyone learning to fly) from an RC flight instructor (for over 30 years), that helped me immensely when I started flying: When flying towards yourself and "left is right, right is left", stop thinking in right vs left. Instead, when you need to level the wing, move the aileron stick UNDER THE LOW WING, as if to prop that low wing tip back up. At least for me, once I committed to the mindset, it no longer made any difference to me whether the plane was coming or going. Now, losing track of orientation, and not knowing if you are coming or going, is another matter. I always suggest assume it's coming, move the stick a little under one wing, and if the wing drops, it's going AWAY.
@Mgp-Rc7 ай бұрын
Or try to slightly turn yourself in the same direction the model is heading and imagine yourself inside it. Ya'll have ZERO excuses these days with PC rc simulators and wifi transmitter training available ha ha!! :)
@hondolane31257 ай бұрын
@@Mgp-Rc Yes, that is the method you will always see new pilots trying to use. It does not work as well as one would think, and is definitely not a viable long-term approach to train yourself to rely on. You are spot-on with the simulators. They are incredibly realistic, and give you the eye-to-brain-to-thumbs training you need for developing correct muscle memory. We have had young students who learned first on a PC solo their plane on the first trip to the field (after check flights tethered to an instructor, of course).

George, When I was learning to fly. The old man teaching me said get the plane up and level it out to a comfortable altitude. Pull back on the power and just cruise. Always give yourself time to think when you're new. Do not start doing crazy tricks. Get used to flying and controlling the plane at level flight and just practice doing clean level turns in a race track oval pattern. You want to get acclimated to seeing it respond to your commands. Eye and hand coordination is crucial. Get very comfortable with it. You want to learn how to fly clean. Nose up in your turns. Slowly. Only using ailerons.. no rudder yet. Nose up and turn.. your trying to do way to much before you can think about what the plane is doing, and how to correct it. It can get a little boring but you'll be a damn good pilot for training this way. Then line up with slow passes over the runway and practice keeping it straight and level and slow right down the center line. When you can do that then landing is a cinch. Just pull the power off and hold it straight. It will gradually fall and land by itself. Just give yourself a long approach and keep her on the centerline. A landing is just a controlled crash 😅😅 Just warm up slowly. Then when you naturally correct any problems without panic . Then crank it up a few notches. But remember! Throttle goes both ways so if it gets ahead of your thinking, then slow it down a while.. I promise you'll never have to hit the recovery button again when you learn this way.
