I'm a native to Cleveland, and a Native American, and I COMPLETELY disagreed with the name change. Honestly, the name never bothered me or offended me. It wasn't just them either. I don't mind the Atlanta Braves name and I have HATED that team since 1995. Now on the reverse, I was very happy that Washington dropped their name, as it was an actual slur. It was like calling your team the "n-words". So, they can change the name all they want, but like most Cleveland fans I will still call them by their proper, rightful name. Indians FOREVER, Guardians, NEVER!

I mostly agree with you but I still call the Redskins by their former name. I just don't see it as a big enough deal to call them the commanders. Sure, it offends some people but at the end of the day it's very far down on the list of things to care about. It's literally just a team's name.

It's a little off-topic but also interesting that the Canadian Football League's (CFL) Edmonton Eskimos were pressured to change their name to Elks for the same reason that the Indians and Redskins were pressured to change theirs. Eskimo (sometimes spelled Esquimaux) is considered a derogatory catch-all name for the Canadian indigenous peoples. The first team to win five consecutive Grey Cups, whose uniforms are very similar to those of the Green Bay Packers, the Elks kept their iconic EE logo.

I don’t understand the change. I’m Venezuelan and here one of the basketball professional teams are the Guaiqueríes de Margarita. Those were natives Indians that lived in the Margarita Island. I always see that team as a way to show respect for the history of the island and the natives. Guaiqueríes are part of the history. The same way I see that with the Cleveland Indians, the Atlanta Braves, the Washington Redskins. I think the problems are the bad mascot names like Red Sox, White Sox or Knicks.

I can't speak to other countries, I do know that the time I've spent in Canada, that they tend to be very particular about the language they use to make sure they are honoring indigenous people groups. I think in the US there could have been a version of events that played out differently, but there has also been a historic downplaying in much of the United States of the role the US played in dismantling indigenous tribes. I think that historic context and the understandably defensive response by many of the teams has made the situation a bit untenable in many of the situations, some like the Redskins and Indians more than others. And i can definitely see an argument that the more boring names are worse lol that's fair, especially compared to many other more exciting names! I mean who names a team after socks!

When will you be doing a footnote for the Washington football team in the NFL? Interesting to also see if the baseball team in Atlanta and the hockey team in Chicago will be changing their names as well. Also another thing is the NFL team in Kansas City. We all know that the "Chiefs" team name was from the mayor of Kansas City who was instrumental in moving the franchise to the city, but the team logo is an obvious nod to an arrowhead, which can be considered Native American iconology.

Then I’ll add footnotes in the future to that one, but that one will have the Washington football team update in it! Yeah I’ve thought about that too! It’ll be interesting to see if there’s more name changes coming!

I find the prospect of the Braves, Blackhawks, and Chiefs changing their name unlikely because the majority thinks the names are fine.

I don't foresee the Chicago Blackhawks changing their name, but I could see them adopting a new logo that isn't a straight up cartoon depiction of a Native American (albeit one that isn't a blatantly offensive caricature like Cleveland's old logo).

Yeah, I definitely like the new identity and name. I know people are just making fun of the new name and shaming it, but it’s gonna take time for the people to get used to this story behind the new name. I wanted to see Spiders though, because of the history of Cleveland baseball no matter the separate franchises. I think there is still hope for that to happen because of a petition if you can Google search it. Just search up ‘Cleveland Spiders petition’ or something similar to that. Still like the new identity of the Guardians, though 👍 -from a Red Sox fan for at least a decade

I wouldn't mind this name change if it wasn't made for the sake of censorship. Indians had absolutely nothing wrong with it, I'd even go as far as to argue it was a respect to indian cultures by having their name as a Baseball franchise. Too bad indians can't have that honor anymore. Guardians isn't inherrintly a terrible name but the fact that the change even needed to be made is what the unfortunate part is.

I think the difference is Native American cultures vs “Indian “ cultures . Just seems like less respect to them but idk can’t speak on their behalf. I’m Mexican so part of my ancestors were natives though, but still don’t know how a Native American would feel with title of Indians . In Spanish Indio ( Indian ) is more of an insult for someone dumb or of Poor education .
