In the last video I looked at how we divide the continents. We looked at how we could have anywhere from 4 to 7 continents! But that left me with a question, how were the continents named?
In this video we start with how Africa was named and the way that Roman naming traditions (specifically the cognomen) played into the name of Africa.
Antarctica was named as the antithesis of the Arctic, which we discussed in our last video!
Next we look at how Asia went from being the name of specific areas to an entire continent.
We then look at how Australia became the name of a country and a continent. Then we look at the name Oceania and why it is often used today.
North and South America come in a pair and were named after the same Italian explorer.
And finally we end with Europe! The only continent that is responsible for naming any of the continents!
I hope you enjoy it!

Complete tangent from the Roman naming system, IIRC the 2nd name was closer to a Dynastic name that put you into “clans” for lack of a better term (Greek concept of the “Demos” or tribe fits thematically) & the 3rd name was the particular family within the earlier clan. In your example, Gaius Julius Caesar is read as Gaius of the Caesarian branch of the Julia (plu. Julii) clan. This matters more for the Patrician class since they have to trace their lineage back to the founding noble families that birthed the clans. They thus would add a 4th “nickname” that got associated with a person based on their characteristics or great deeds. A prime example is the famous Scipio, whom has the same 3 names as his father: Publius Cornelius Scipio; but after his famous victories in Africa was given the extra name Africanus that we associate with him, making him Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus. At least this is what I’ve read & listened to on that subject. EDIT: I just realized you might have used the names that commoners (plebeians or plebs) used, which has 2 names + the nickname since they have no prestigious heritage to track. Example being Aulus Vitellius Germanicus, one of the infamous rulers during the Year of the 4 Emperors, was born a pleb (albeit a very rich pleb) with his first 2 names & acquired the third as Governor of Germania Inferior.
