As I first heard this song, I did not expect the modulations. Like all good modulations, they were subtle and well executed. Let's explore what made them so seamless and how they brought the song full circle.

I've only watched a few of your videos and you're already one of my favorite channels. The way you described the super lydian concept with the circle of fifths made it really easy to understand. Great stuff.

just want to say a huge thank you to this particular video from Leon Waves for introducing me to this band, The Reign of Kindo. I don't understand why they're so underrated, their compositions are all incredibly thought out.

Im so happy to find someone covering a song by one of my favorite bands. They are not as big as they should be and their amazing songs need to be analyzed more often for their brilliance.

Are my ears really deceiving me so much that I can't hear the difference between a Bb in first inversion from a Bb in second inversion? I am totally hearing that second chord (Bb/F) as a Bb/D, so that the bassline ascends from C to D and Eb, not from C to F and back down to Eb. Is there something weird with the mix? Or is the bass playing the low D while the chordal instrumentation plays Bb/F? I'm utterly confused...

You are correct! I mislabeled the chord, even though I heard Bb/D in my mind.

I heard that straight away too, but had to assume that it was a straight up typo or whatever, given Leon's obvious prowess in these matters... hahaha ;-)

Wow! Great analysis of this piece, F Dorian has always been one of my favorite key centers and really makes for great vamps. Crazy to see it in parallel with B Major. To be honest, it's not the most abrupt modulation I've ever heard, and I think that idea of using Lydian modes to cycle from B up to Db/C# probably explains why. Wouldn't it make more sense in that context to consider the Fm9 chord an E#m9 though? At least if you consider the earlier section being in B rather than Cb. I know the spelling would be atrocious but in my mind E# would more easily be reconciled with its preceding F# neighbor.

Another way of thinking about that F#maj7 -> Fm9 could be thought of as a sort of tritone substitution rather than just a “super Lydian” shift

An excellent breakdown! Thank you so much! Still not clear on what you mean by the lydian of a lydian? How would that work with C lydian for example? How is Gb the Lydian of B? (09:03)?

during the modulation the melody kind of focuses on the Ab or G#, so I’d analyze everything in terms of G# minor. this explains why the C#m chord is add6 (ii chords aren’t usually add6 in jazz, because it sounds too much like a V9 chord, but iv chords often are). the F#major7 isn’t anything special - it’s common practice in jazz to change chord qualities as one pleases, and a F#7 might have sounded too bland, or implied too much of a traditional V7 chord resolution (boring!). the F minor chord could just be thought of as moving back to Ab major. the most out-there part of the modulation is that the melody over the Fm hits a G natural. before that the melody has been using the Ab pentatonic minor scale, and it would have made perfect sense to simply hit the Ab over the Fm chord, for both a more accessible melody and a common tone modulation. this calls special attention to the lyric “again,” although if i were writing the song, i would have written an Ab into the melody because there doesn’t seem to be anything clever being implied here.
