This is truly brilliant and I have shared it far and wide. As a behavior consultant myself I am constantly blown away by people like you who make the time to produce wonderful videos like this that can help SO many people. Thank you, thank you, thank you! it's lovely to see a dog having so much fun while learning a life saving skill at the same time!

Hi Jim, If you'd rather not use a clicker, say "Yes." You probably use good boy whether or not you treat afterward, so it doesn't have the same power. The marker should be unique and it should always mean that a reward is coming. You can certainly use their name, like "Parker, COME!" which is Parker's normal recall cue. But it will take some extra training for your dogs to only come when their name is called, instead of all of them at once :)

Would it be OK to say his name and then the recall or should I only use the recall word? We have multiple dogs in the home. Also, do they need to know clicker training first? Or is this OK to do with them never having been clicker trained? Could I use Good boy/girl instead of a click? Thanks!

Great video! I very much want to live wherever this is, lol. Question: Do you always have to use treats? At what point can you stop using treats? Or do you just have to carry treats with you everywhere? Can you add a second step to this? For instance, I want to teach my dog "post" - the standard formal come, where the dog comes to you and sits in front and looks at you. Would I click twice, once when the dog turned, and again when he sat? Or just once, when he sat?

Thanks for the questions. First, you don't always have to have treats because this method of training presents the treat AFTER the dog has done the behavior. This makes it very easy to quickly substitute other things that the dog (not the human) finds equally or more rewarding than food. For some dogs, this is a ball, a tug toy, or some other fun activity. But, if you have a dog that is not highly motivated by play, then there is nothing wrong with continuing to use food rewards as long as they're done in this manner - presented after the behavior, not presented as a way to get the behavior (such as showing the dog the food in order to get him to come to you). You have to feed your dog daily anyway, why give it all away in a bowl when you can deliver his daily rations as rewards? As for adding steps to it, absolutely! You can always change criteria. Teach the recall and the straight front sit separately, then chain them later. At first, you might click/treat the recall and then cue the sit, for another click/treat, but it won't take long before your dog begins to create a behavior chain, offering the front sit on his own, which you can then reward.
