Really appreciate the videos. Just got the opportunity to get a 1988 samurai and it’s in great condition but with a few issues. And your videos not only have sold me on the samurai for my drivin/hunting rig but also as helping me tune up the quirks. Thanks!

Just did this on my 95 Sidekick that was having intermittent starting issues. Starts up every time now! No issue. The mechanism is a little different on this model (three copper pieces!) but it's pretty straight-forward where the contacts are supposed to go. One thing you must lookout for is the springs that will most likely flop out the moment you open it up. Thanks for this video!!!

Had this issue on a 91 tracker, tried cleaning the ignition switch contacts with no luck, tried cleaning the battery terminal with no luck, then tried cleaning the big contact on the actual starter. That fixed it! Sharing for those also not eager to replace their starter.

95 % fixed my problem after cleaning and reassembly worked most of time, still click once in a while. Disassembled again, cleaned, regreased and added slim plastic spacer between copper plate and springs. Diy spacer cut from plastic Krystal Light drink mix container. Maybe springs getting a little weak. Works like a champ now.

I did this fix this weekend. Opening the switch, it didn't look too bad but I noticed one of the 3 tiny springs sat lower than the other two. I gently stretched it out to the length of the other two springs, cleaned and greased it up, reassembled. It works on every single turn now---thanks for this video! One other fix/idea video---My Samurai kept doing some weird, random acceleration/sputtering/hiccupping; no matter what I adjusted at the carburetor, it ran like crap and was unreliable. I finally found that the acelerator cable was fraying at the engine wall. That area of cable at the engine side of the wall is covered by a brown plastic stabilizer so you can't readily see the cable inside---the snapped threads were bunching up inside the stabilizer and not allowing the cable to slide freely. The cable was not completely broken so no mechanic ever thought to check the cable! It's super cheap and easy to fix. It takes some listening and adjusting at the carburetor after installing the new cable (be patient), but well worth it. The new cable and adjustments have also alleviated sticky clutch problems (hard to shift into 1st in cold engine. I don't exactly understand why, but I'll take it!) After this ig switch video fix, my Sam is running like a champ! Thanks again!!

The Sidekick-Tracker switch can be cleaned in the same way but it is less common to have this issue. I have found it is more likely to be a dirty battery terminal issue on those vehicles.

Tony, thanks for the videos, informative, funny and entertaining. On my 87 Sami, I disassembled the ignition switch and cleaned the contacts as shown in your video. Still, very weak power to starter. If I jump the solenoid to battery, it turns the engine over fine. Any ideas? Besides dirty contacts in the ignition switch, what else would cause this?

You talk of the Relay way to fix a clicky starter ... which i have done ... well, I'm doing both cuz I just found this video now.

Thanks for the video. My sidekick has been sitting for 4 years had the click, click before. Now it won't even start if I jump the solenoid with a screwdriver. Time to tear into it and do it the right way.

Having clicky starter issues. Done this repair, worked one month, clicky starter again. Went to repair it again, plastic broke. So i put in toggle switch for ignition and push button for starter. Switches are designed for the voltage and wattage. Worked fine for month, then back to clicker starter. Jumping the starter at selnoid works every time. Wires look fine to starter. Next???
