Yeah. Here’s a thing. Some people sniff out kindness and take it for weakness and will take advantage of anyone they can. It’s just the reality of things unfortunately so we gotta learn how to be kind out in the world and know when to put our foot down.

@@blondiescakeface1555 YES!!!! It sometimes seems that the idiom that 'the customer is always right' allows for a lot of abuse from people who feel entitled 😓😒 I always believed that telling the truth and being up front or sticking to your convictions would naturally weed out the 'undesirables' in any aspect of your life but it seems to come with some real nuclear fall out when it comes to disgruntled customers and social media or even just gossip between clients so I'm glad you pointed out that sometimes it's not always as simple or easy to disentangle yourself without some form of revenge exacted upon you for doing so 😱
@deboraht5079
@deboraht5079 4 жыл бұрын
Nope Thanks -- Part of it is because people teach people how to treat them. Being lenient and excessively enabling caused the client to take advantage of her. Then when she had to be strict the client had a hard time with it. I think it would have been better to tell the client her expectations up front. Then the client would have to deal with reality or not come back. That would be on the client to accept the rules or decide not to get extensions if it is too hard on her budget or transportation problems. It isn't right when people push their own agenda onto others who are shy or reserved to take advantage. But sometimes it is necessary to stand ground from the start because the professional knows things from experience that the newbie doesn't know and needs to accept.

that's why I can't STAND when managers or companies cater to them. INFURIATING. The customer is literally NEVER right. Not the ones who try to throw that in an employees face. Partly why I wish I owned a business. Just to be the one to put Karen's in their place since no one ever has, which is why they act that way. What people are doing when they give those people refunds, is pass that problem off along to some other person/company. Because they haven't LEARNED ANYTHING. Except that if they kick and scream, they get their way. NO!

Carson Brown DEFINITELY!! Unfortunately, they’re everywhere! These people make life so much harder than it already is. ANY job dealing with the public is rough because of such people. BUT ESPECIALLY BEING A HAIRDRESSER!!! Every job I’ve ever had since I was 15 (I’m 32) has been a public service job. Daycare, cashier, retail, server, and I’ve been a hairdresser for 11 yrs. out of all the jobs I’ve had, I’ve dealt with more of these types of people than any other profession. (Serving and retail are both pretty close on the list though) I feel like everyone should have to work a public service job for at least a year... just so people would actually understand how hard it is and maybe learn how to not be a jerk. I say maybe bc I know not everyone learns... My honest opinion, I see people who act like this lack maturity, character and have a strong sense of entitlement. It’s so hard to be professional at times like these.....

ALN 102 I’m a new stylist and I’m struggling with dealing with clients and how to respond to things like this, so I was wondering, what do you usually do/say when a new client says this to you? I haven’t had this happen yet and I genuinely have no idea what I would do in this situation, I know I wouldn’t want to go ahead and do it but I would never want to refuse a client either... such a tricky situation!!

I used to have a really good vet, then I moved to a different state, my dogs (15 years) had some medical emergencies, and when I got to the only ER vets open near me, immediately they said they would do euthanasia and dispose of the body. They said there was no way they would survive and that they would just die, WITHOUT even running any tests. (This is multiple occurrences out of desperation of nothing else being open at the time) I’m not a vet but I’m in human medicine so you can imagine how pissed off i was. They all got through it by the way and we went to an actual vet who gave a shit. In her case it was clearly the guest taking advantage and being a jerk. However to say that complaining about a (potentially very real) past issue with a (possible very inept or corrupt) medical provider couldn’t be valid doesn’t seem very sensical.

The only time I’ve ever gotten upset with a vet was when they were rough with my dog. Like yanking on her leash, acting like she was some horrible dog when she was just scared. Ever since she’s been so terrified of the vet that it’s almost impossible for her to be seen, and even then I have to give her the calming meds/sedatives or whatever it is.

You can actually fire a customer. I’m studying that in business marketing right now. There are three ways to fix the issue: get the customer to change (nearly impossible), make it so difficult that the customer fires themselves, or fire the customer outright. All are respectable because YOU have to do what makes your business profitable. If a customer is costing too much money or time, you have every right to fire that customer.

I've never heard the phrase "fire the customer" before but every business has the right to refuse any client for any reason (or no reason whatsoever).
@southernladyish
@southernladyish 4 жыл бұрын
Kinlie Paulson YES! Technically you can refuse a service! Of course, there needs to be a legit reason without discrimination or just bc you don’t want to do it. In the 11 yrs I’ve been a hairdresser, I’ve only refused to do one service on a client. I was in the middle of the service too. She specifically asked me for a short chin length haircut. I asked her 3 different times if that is what she wanted and even got her to literally show me the exact length. She agreed all 3 times. In situations like these, I always cut it longer than they ask bc I can take more off if need be. I cut her hair an inch and a half longer than requested. I got the back cut and layered, started to the front side, cut a section, let the next section down and started to cut it and she started SCREAMING at me. I stepped back and apologized and try to get her to calm down. Nope! She just kept screaming and cussing me out. I kept trying to apologize and explain how she specifically told me chin length 3 times and I cut it longer than she actually asked. That made the situation worse. I stayed polite and professional the entire time. After being completely disrespected and degraded for almost 5 minutes, she finally screams “JUST CUT MY FN HAIR AND GET IT OVER WITH”. At that point, I was done. I refused and told her I would not be finishing the cut bc I did not appreciate being disrespected and screamed at. Of course she continued to scream. I immediately went to my coworker and thank God she finished it. I left the salon after that ( I was supposed to get off an hour prior to this situation). The next day the lady had called and wanted me fired. Naturally my manager , who knew me very well, refused to fire me bc of how I did handle the situation. Not to mention my coworkers, and 2 other clients who were in the salon at the time, called my manager and told her everything along with compliments on how I handled the situation. YES you can refuse a service.... BUT there needs to be a legitimate reason.

Deee - My husband is a self-employed hardwood flooring installer/refinisher, and we have often said the exact same thing. The first week of this month he was walking out the door to go to a job that had been scheduled two months ago, and confirmed two weeks earlier. The phone rings... I answer it and it’s the client. “Just calling to let you know we forgot you were coming, and we’re not there. We’re in XXX. (A city 6 hours away) and we won’t be back for three days. This was a whole house job in an empty house that they inherited, and are renovating to move into. Obviously two days is not enough time to do that work, so they asked to be rescheduled for as soon as possible. Told them that he would look at the schedule and call them back when they got back in town, but the soonest he thought it would be was mid January. They were really disappointed and said they understood that it was their own fault, but could he to please do what he could to get them in sooner. I took a call from another client who wasn’t sure his general contractor was going to be done with his portion of the work in time for my husband to start on schedule. I explained that it was up to him, he could work around that and be in other rooms while the General Contractor finished in the kitchen but that if he wanted to delay the floor work until January he could do that. He expressed concern that it would cause a scheduling problem for my husband. I explained that we actually had a client who was waiting for our first available opening, and he rescheduled for mid January to allow them to have his scheduled appointment and allow his General Contractor extra time. Everyone should be happy, right? Wrong!!! (Well- everyone except for my husband and I, who had lost a huge portion of our expected income for the month, with no opportunity at that late date to make it up) When I called the cancellation clients to let them know that he would be able to fit them in a full month earlier than he’d originally thought, the husband was appreciative and agreed to the date. In the background the wife was flipping out because it was too close to Christmas! (Remember- they aren’t even living in this house!) And then she wanted the mid-January slot which the other client graciously agreed to take to allow the cancellation client to be done as soon as possible. When I explained that was no longer available, that the client previously scheduled for mid December had taken that slot to allow them to be done as soon as possible she was even angrier. Husband said to schedule for December slot. The next day he left a message on the phone that after discussing it with his wife they will wait until the last week of January. 🤬🤯😡

She sounds like the type of client to have "the talk". "It seems like I'm not the right provider for you at this time. Our schedules are not coordinating for the times you are available. I would recommend finding a technician who is closer to you, as it will save you time and money in the future. Thank you for coming in, I wish you all the best." I would guess that "Susan" has exhausted any nearby eyelash technicians which is why she needs to travel an hour or so out of town.

I am Eastern European and if anyone ever did something like Susan, she’d be dealt with. Meaning she would quickly be made aware of how damn annoying she is. I love USA, lived here for 14 years and I love how friendly ppl are, especially in places like spas, beauty salons, restaurants etc, but omg customers take advantage of the kindness and patience of others. When I was a receptionist at a salon, we had one client who was notorious for being 40 mins to an hour and a half late EVERY TIME. And she would want highlights, a cut and a style. Those are not eyelash extensions, they take individual strip lashes that you can buy at the drug store and glue them on with hair extension glue which will rip your natural lashes out and ruin them. Most nail salons do this. Lash extensions are one individual lash extension put on one individual lash with medical grade glue sensitive enough for the eyes. Be careful!! It’s important to do a good amount of research especially if its something as sensitive as your eyes!

I have been going to my nail tech every 2 weeks for the past 6-7 YEARS and have only had to last minute cancel one appointment when I was in a car accident. Otherwise I always reschedule, and always with plenty of notice so that she has time to get another client in my spot. If I cancel at the last second I am putting a dent directly into her paycheck and I would gladly pay her even though I did not get the service just because I value her so much and I would not want her to struggle in any way because of me. Right from the very first appointment with that woman she was not respectful of you, your craft, or your time! Some people are just not self-aware and are oblivious to their impact on others. You have every right to "drop" a problematic client, anyone who tells you otherwise is probably a nut just like Susan.

This lady is DEFINITELY the worst, but I do have a suggestion that might help in the future. It seems like you do a good job communicating with clients when it comes to their service and the results they can expect, but for people who don't know much about the beauty industry, they might not know how it works. So I would suggest that when you go out of your way for someone - you let them know. If you squeeze them in when you usually wouldn't - let them know! When you offer to do a fill instead of the usual full set - let them know! It seems like you really go out of your way to do things for the client, but if they don't know the expectations, then they don't know you're doing something special just for them. Something as simple as "Usually in this situation I would do [blank], but because this is the first time/I have more free time/whatever, I can offer to do [blank] just this time." That lets them know that you're doing something special for them and also sets their expectations for the future.

We didn't have a cancellation policy, we never really had the need for one, as majority of our clientele were great. Anyway this happened one to many times and I briefed the staff that she can not have another appointment without paying a deposit of £20 I had lost so much money to this lady already! She called and the stylist told her 'you will need to come in and pay a deposit' you can imagine our surprise when she did!! Anyway she still didn't bother showing up for the appointment (despite paying £20!)🤦🏼‍♀️ however, she wandered into the shop randomly two weeks later and asked COULD SHE HAVE HER DEPOSIT BACK!!?@! lololol, I nearly passed out at the gall of this woman, I said "no you can not!" I am 10 minutes into your video and let me just say there are people who use appointments like this to vent because they have no one to talk to and there are also people who use these appointments to vent their problems as a manipulation tactic to get people like you to feel sorry for them so they can use it against you when it is convenient for them. Your video came up on my feed and can't wait to view the rest of this video and others. Thanks for the information about lashes shedding...I had no idea! Next time when someone comes in for a touchup but needs a full set let them know you can't because of xyz. Maybe, in the goodiebag you give clients the first time, make up a pamphlet or something with all of the rules like cancellation, when they should come in for appts and why that is best etc. Sometimes we can forget things, I know I do when especially bc sometimes it can be a lot of info. It is a shame that when you give people an inch and they take a mile. YOU did NOTHING wrong!! If she will feel awful and go around yapping her mouth negatively, tht is on HER. There are people in life who are just NEVER happy, they love to complain and can never take responsibility for their own actions.

As someone who's worked booking clients for 10+ years and for 7 years have successfully been booked back to back with regular clients I love and 98% of my new ones lol, I can tell you that this is called growing pains more than a "client horror story". It sucks for sure, but once you learn to harness situations before they turn into "hellish situations" you'll feel like the Queen of the world. The key to a stress-free work life: Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries. Find out what the problem is, assess and figure out a solution and let everyone in on the plan, respectfully. People don't know your world until you tell/teach them. Setting boundaries is such an incredible thing. Clients learn and will stop pushing when they realize you won't budge. You'll get to a point where you have a booked calendar and a waitlist of people ready to fill those advanced canceled spots. Good luck girl. People can suck but when you have your boundaries set you attract people who respect that and you'll build a loyal and quality client list.

I always love your client stories! I work in healthcare and I can always relate to them. You hit the nail on the head with this one. You were NEVER going to please this person. In fact as soon as you said she told you her life story at the first meeting including her medical history and "woe is me" tale I knew how this was going to end. These type of people rely on the manipulation of others to get their way. As if everyone around them needs to bow down and cater to their every whim because they have issues. Guaranteed she is used to getting her way with everyone. So I find that if you identify these types of people up front you need to be very firm with them and set clear boundaries otherwise they are constantly trying to "take a mile". Almost like people with borderline personality issues. Most likely if you do set these boundaries with them they will not come back because they want only to deal with people they can easily manipulate. Try not to beat yourself up (although you will because you seem like a person that prides themselves on providing quality service and being thorough). Thanks for sharing because this story can be a teaching tool for others. Stay blessed.

I FELT this. Girl, I'm over her making a mental note:📝 No one gets a pass, period. 📌 🤣 I'm upset for you. We have a client who comes into our school regularly and has for years. She purposely gives each student a hard time throughout her entire service every time. I have heard her telling other people in clinic that she does it on purpose. She gets a kick out of it. Meanwhile, each student is sweating and uncomfortable with her while performing services. Sadly, I've known many people who behave like this because they enjoy the power they feel they have over you by controlling everything. It's like an added bonus when they get free stuff from it. It validates their behavior in their mind because it's like you're admitting you're wrong and they're right. Sick really if you think about it. But, the takeaway here for sure is that it's not you. Quality over quantity all day. 🙌

@Francesca Taylor our instructors are savages ....towards us! They kiss the client's ass. It's kind of weird. Last week, one of our students was getting real uncomfortable with a client who was talking about thieves and how "you gotta watch the Puerto Ricans around here because they always steal" and the student is actually Puerto Rican. I watched as she got flustered and walked away to calm down then she told our instructor she wasn't comfortable completing the service and did not want the client in the future. Our instructor said "oh well" and "what do you think is gonna happen in the salon? You just have to deal with it". I was appalled honestly. It's not at all professional. Then this same student got a text from her mother stating someone in the family passed away and so she was responding to the text when the instructor confronted her about. The student explained what happened and the instructor responded and said "oh well, I got a text when my mom died but I kept working" I can't even make this up. I'm still flabbergasted just having to tell the story. I WILL get that t-shirt that says "I survived beauty school" when I graduate HAHAHAHA

I actually got to this video by accident, but I’m so glad I decided to watch and listen. First, GIRL, you are NOT complaining! Second, as a person who is disabled as well and suffers from multiple medical conditions that can leave me hospitalized for weeks at a time, I can tell you right now that consideration and respect for other people’s time is even MORE in the forefront of my mind. I don’t always know when my conditions are going to flare and leave me bedridden for days or weeks, so I value every moment of ‘good’ time I have. I try to be very conscious of the way in which I spend my time, and part of how I spend my time depends on how others show up as well. I appreciate everyone who carves time out for me. And because of this, I expect myself to show up for them as well. Can I always physically do so? No. And, to a degree, do people need to understand scheduling/planning anything with me may sometimes have last-minute adjustments or cancellations? Yes. BUT. That is absolutely NO EXCUSE and gives me NO RIGHT take advantage of anyone’s understanding. Because I have a different physical situation than most of interactions, it does take a little more effort on my part to make sure I can coordinate plans. I cannot drive either. And finding rides around others’ schedules is hard. Sometimes I have to Uber. But none of this is shocking or new to me, and therefore I arrange accordingly. And if things do seem like they aren’t going to work out, I communicate with people RIGHT AWAY. Because yes, obviously my day has changed, but DUH- my day is now affecting SOMEONE ELSE’S day, which will affect people in THEIR day, and on and on. You don’t affect only you. Most of the time is it really that grand of a ripple? Probably not. But you don’t know. So why would you potentially cause so much negativity, when simply being conscious and respectful is free, not physically laboring, and just easier? No one is 💯 all day every day, but I choose to give 100% of what I do have. And OMG THIS GOT LONG AND ALL OVER THE PLACE. 😖😩 The irony of how much time I’ve taken up for anyone choosing to read this whole thing has not been lost on me.... 😭🙃 To wrap up... I’m so glad I stayed to watch and girl... I will fight for you so just call me 📱, beep me 📟, when you need to reach me! 😂😉🧡

I'm a physiotherapist and I've had patients like that who try to take advantage of my service. Earlier I would stress a lot about them but now I stand my ground firmly. In fact, when a patient once came so late that my shift timings were over, I walked out with my stuff in front of her saying that I need to go I have a personal commitment elsewhere and that someone else who's free that time would be happy to take her in. After that day she always came on time! You should have told Susan that in a way you're already giving her a discount by not slapping the two time cancellation charges. Time is money. You shouldn't feel sorry for someone wasting your valuable time being attention seekers.

I felt this! I’m a server and deal with entitled people all the time. Some people expect you to lay a red carpet and almost give your life because they are paying for something.

When I get my nails refilled, they charge me something different EVERY TIME. Never, have I ever questioned the price, because I know sometimes my nails are a mess, or I waited too long to come back in, and the process costs money. This was completely manipulative of her and if she can’t afford the upkeep for elective cosmetology, she shouldn’t be booking ANY appointments.

People will run over you if you let them. Be firm. Let them know you are the boss. I'm teaching my daughter this now. Sometimes it's hard to stand up for ourselves, but we just gotta do it. If not, they will take full advantage of you...because you let them. You got this😊 Keep practicing.👍

I totally know how you feel about the discount dilemma - but recently I decided to make the other person feel uncomfortable for having the audacity to even ask me to do that!!

People like her often walk over people all of the time. Once you gave into her the first time, she thought that she could keep getting away with it. You can tell she grew up thinking she’s entitled. So sorry you experienced this.

Girl yes! Build that confidence! It’s taken me years, and I think it comes with age and experience as well. You handled this crazy lady very well. She tried to push you around and take advantage and you stood up for yourself. You don’t need bad clients! ❤️

I can literally picture exactly whay you’re talking about in my head. I’ve had the same experiences, it’s so crazy. I totally get what you’re saying when you say “red flags...” Those clients need to get cut out 😭 Makes our job that we love horrible.

'Susan' doesn't deserve to get full refund, specially that her lashes looked good when she came to take her money back, you had the evidence that she was lying...

As a teacher i can completely relate when you said it's hard to stand your ground but you don't want the resentment to spoil your job. Teaching high schoolers has really grown me a backbone because accommodating all these kids who are mean and ungrateful rather then holding them accountable and teaching them respect almost ruined my job fight me the first two years. This third year i an true to myself and ask that they respect my rules while i respect them and this has been the most fruitful and fulfilling year so far.

Oh dang that sounds really tough, and I know I’m shy as well and am working on not being taken advantage of by people. You also aren’t alone cause my classmates also deal with people like this at their part time jobs and my mom deals with people like that at her work too.

I have a similar personality type as you (introverted, always trying to be accommodating and hating confrontation) and I swear the people that are like your client can sense when someone is like that and it’s almost like a game for them to see how much they can push you around! I’m glad you stood your ground with the full set and that your boss stood up for you!

girl! I totally get it. I am also a people pleaser and always uncomfortable with building up a thick skin. I legit looked up where you are located because I feel like we would get along and I love doing my lashes, but im in NY :(. you seem very nice and educated in your field so I wouldn't feel bad about anything at all.

I like videos like this because it makes us hairdressers not feel so alone. If you work in the hair business your going to have a client that is not so nice to you and that you can’t please once in a while. It happens to everyone behind the chair at some point. It also educates the public on things that we really do go through doing hair.

We’ve had a few clients like this and the main thing you need to do is keep professional, fully fully professional, keep your rules and keep them strict! No faffing about, when we wasn’t so strict in the beginning people would really take advantage, and they do this cause they can see that your lovely. Bless you but literally your not the only one and to prevent this you need to do everything you was saying you ‘should have’ done 🥰 so you already know what you need to do, just need to apply it ❤️

I loved your story and have a lot of sympathy for your situation. I am self employed and I have encountered this type of client from time to time during the course of my career and they suck! I wish I had the magic advice on how to identify them early on, but I really don't. Beware if people ask for free consultations, free tests (hair colour, eyelash extensions, stylings etc), but I suggest standing firm on policies and explain them clearly up front, including charges for late attendances, cancelled appointments etc. and get a credit card number up front to which you can charge your fees. Put a hold on your fees 48 hours before the appointment(and tell them at the time of booking),and you will soon weed out the worst of the lot. I really enjoyed your style of storytelling, and I have subscribed. Best of luck!
