I see 2 lessons here as a consumer. 1. Don't go to all-in-one salons to get specific beauty services done, besides hair. 2. Avoid Groupon beauty deals!

Groupon is definitely hit or miss. I put myself on Groupon to get my name and new studio out there, and it's worked well for me amd I've gained lots of clients for it. But in general I would be careful about deals. Most of the time you're not getting much money off and you're gonna get a sub-par service for one reason: we DON'T get paid for a groupon service. At least not right away. Groupon only pays out twice a month to an owner (if that, sometimes it's only once because you can end up paying groupon out) and if we don't get tipped for the service (which happens quite a bit with groupon clients) we basically don't get paid for what can be hours of work.

I loved this. Honestly I'm terrible at coloring hair, waxing, and doing nails. I worked in a full service salon where the manager bitched at me for needing trained again in color, waxing and nails when I had quit a two year career at a mostly mens barber shop to try full service. The salon atmosphere there was miserable and I got a few bad reviews and eventually quit after fighting with the boss a few times. So I'm still a stylist, I just work at a chain barber shop and I do freelance makeup and hairstyling for event/wedding on my own time. I am financially independent and quite happy with where I am. I know what I'm good at and I don't do services that make me miserable.

I can TOTALLY appreciate these stories of struggle. And it’s funny we have something in common, I went to school to learn hair, and somehow ended up becoming a nail tech. Had no interest or confidence or training for that matter and I will say it was a great experience at the time. I ended up loving it & was happy to do it but always regretted not pursuing hair which was always my dream- and fast forward many jobs 2 kids later I became a lash tech! My lash girl who owns a very successful business in a village by the water & she offered me a job doing nails but I wasn’t wanting to resume nails. I was over it. Then she suggested lashes, offered to train & certify me, and I ended up loving it! But there are plentyyyy of not so fun times 😂

I’m a professional nail tech and to do good manicure that does last it takes more practice and training. If step are not done right the manicure just won’t last, but polish even gel polish are not that long lasting. Especially, if you customers is hard on they’re hand. If the gel polish just peel right off it’s probably a bad prep. Gel polish nail have to prep very well to last. I usually do more acrylic or dip powder nails since they are more long lasting, but you need even more training to do them. I can’t imagine being in your shoes with not much training having to do nails for not much money. That must have been hard... Your a very courageous person! 😊

Rinabear in salons sometimes it’s just junior stylist trying to keep their job. I’ve been in salons where they basically convinced me that I could do facial waxing with no experience. It didn’t end well when a customer wound up with a piece of wax on her upper lip with a strip attached and after several attempts to pull the wax off I had to get my boss in before I hurt the client. So embarrassing but it was not my strong suit and I had told the owner this but she insisted it was easy for anyone to be able to do. Person I feel worst for is the customer.

Oh girl I feel you! When I was 18 I worked at a salon that offered ear piercing. I myself at that time had a few facial piercings so they assumed ‘oh, you’ll be good at piercing!’. I don’t know why that assumption was made, yes I had piercings but I didn’t do them myself! So they then had the stylist who’d been doing the ear piercing teach me, in like less than an hour, then start booking piercing in with me! No professional training, no health and safety training, just off you go! I luckily don’t think I caused any massive disasters apart from getting my rubber glove stuck in someone’s ear piercing 😂 but luckily I knew this client fairly well. But I think back now (this was 11 years ago) and can’t believe the unprofessionalism of the salon! I was young and so excited to have the job I was too scared to say no

I’m an esthetician, I work in a spa that’s connected to a salon that also has a nail department. There are places that can be an all in one spot and are amazing at it but it doesn’t work for every establishment. You have to be picky of who you hire, their training and how you manage them. In this situation your boss shouldn’t have thrown you into something you weren’t comfortable in doing. I had to be watched by other esthetician’s to check off that I knew how to do things that I very clearly knew how to do before I could even take clients.

I’m also from PA. I used to go to a salon closed to me now my nail tech owns her own salon so I go to her and her salon and it’s just her. I have acrylic nails (I have them because I have really weak nails underneath due to a chronic illness and spoke with my doctor before getting them) I got them in May then got a new set put on in September. I get gel usually. I get gel on my toes as well however I pay $30 for each. My nail tech is awesome and very careful with me.

A good salon/spa wants to see your work before you work on clients, and if you don't know what you're doing but want to learn they will show you and then have you practice on them.

It’s so bizarre to me that in the US you train for hair and beauty in one go. In the UK you either train in hair or beauty then you can choose what you specialise in or be an all rounder. So like I trained in hair, beauty and went on to do a lash course, brow course and nail courses. I only done hair do I can blow dry but now you can take a full qualification just in blow drying. Like to me this makes more sense.

Yeah what is also interesting that here in most European countries you actually get to cut other students hair first and then "volunteers". So you start you're study's with beautiful hair and by the end of the year you're almost bold and have terrible color. At least that's what I have been told.Make sense because than your hair stylist knows the pain of growing out a pixi cut instead of "sory, never had short hair".
@jodiebutler38184 жыл бұрын
just me I am in the UK we don’t always practice on each other but most of the time we will. But we will almost always work on real people for free. Or you can do an apprenticeship where you learn while you work. Very very rare to find someone who does full hair and beauty though. Like in the UK they are totally different things like you choose one or another. I wouldn’t want an all rounder do something I’d rather see a specialist so the way it’s done here makes the most sense to me.

I totally agree! I also think the program is way too short, considering how much you cover. It varies by state, but most programs are less than a year long, which just isn't enough time. I feel like our entire education system over here is incredibly flawed and all just a money scheme, but that's a different topic for a different day lol!

This sounds like my internship. Just throw in, with that "push through your limits" "experiences" .... like how suppose i gain good experience if you throw me in without a training or even simple tell how to do it.

Story #1: Your boss sounded so unprofessional handing you the phone. As the owner she should have mediated the situation. It’s not your fault that you didn’t receive the proper training beforehand from the salon. I would have told the client that for sure. Story #2: you’re right about the gel polish. If it had been a week then that’s not your fault whatsoever! She sounds so vile.

I didn't know u could do nails at a hair salon. I know they do eyebrows. My hairstylist was sick and did not disclose that info until she was already working and putting her germs all over me. It happened not only once, but twice. Needless to say I haven't gone back to that same person!

Nail tech from Texas, here. I feel you,I feel you so much. At my school, they started the nail tech class when it was time to tech the cosmetologist how to do nails. We spent a week on how to do a basic mani and pedi. Mostly focused on the mani though cause in Texas they have to do a manicure as part of the state board practical. It’s also illegal for cosmetologists to cut cuticle here. I still can though. Speaking of which... I was taught that you really shouldn’t cut the cuticles, and that was a hard one for me to get over when I first started out. First job I had I got constant complaints about my cuticle work cause I refused to cut them. I eventually came to the conclusion that I should just do it, cause it’s expected of me.

I just started microblading. My first follow up was a nightmare. She was also not my instructors favorite client during school. She just wouldnt stay still, was very loud, and bossy. But, I stupidly decided to try to do her touch up, in my living room...the lighting wasn't great, but I had some other lighting that I used. She complained about it being too bright. It was a nightmare! And her brows looked like shit when we went outside. I pointed out one over stroke...but the 9thrr side was just as bad. I did them for free, because she got the first service for free. But I felt horrible, but at the same time...she is like, an impossible client. Ughhh...I hate the beginning and not knowing what you're doing.

I feel you! But acknowledging where you can improve on things and then putting in the work to get better is what's important! No one is going to be perfect right from the very beginning. We need practice and experience to master our skills.

I understand where you're coming from, but talking from the clients' point of view, I would have done the same thing as the lady who insisted on the refund. When I get my nails regularly coloured, it will usually last for at least one week before it chips, and gel mani pedi will last for two weeks. The way your boss managed her workers are terrible, but again, from customers' point of view, it's none of our business. No matter how cheap the service is, it is a price we both have both agreed on and any client would expect at least something regular out of it. If not, yep, all the negative reviews and refunds of course (I could definitely see the lady's POV on the tip. If it really was unsatisfactory I would ask for everything I paid for).

If you want a nail service for an event... GO TO A NAIL SALON! 🤦🏾♀️ If you want a “deal” from a place that doesn’t necessarily specialize in nails you will not get a “great job.” Your former employer definitely threw you to the wolves & under a bus (at the same time)! You’re right it is good to look back & see your growth as a stylist. I’m still looking for my niche, just glad I’m better at the services I give, but I definitely want more education. You always forget about the 100 happy people you served and always are haunted by the five people who hated you.🙄🤷🏽♀️😌

They’re supposed to push back the cuticles! They’re not supposed to cut them off, anyone who does that is doing so at their own risk! Also. Who has nail polish chipping off toes on the first day? Are they digging a hole with their foot? I don’t believe all the reviews, some unhappy people exaggerate.

I've read about different type of customers and how to deal with them. Custom service is SOOO important, like the most important. I would say, don't do things you're bad at. Like no. Don't do that. They can do it themself then. They PAY for someone to do it professional then it should look professional!!!!! Period
