I love how you explain all these story times with actual cosmetology theory💯 and how this video included multiple perspectives from different people! I love your content because it’s all focused on education and there are so many stylists and even cosmetology schools for that matter that are unfortunately not! It can potentially take hundreds of hours longer than what you learn at cosmetology school to develop a certain skill. I’m grateful that you still have the motivation to put out content during these insane times of uncertainty this is what I needed today 🤩

The whole being honest with the client thing reminded me of the first time I ever had my hair dyed at a salon. I wanted to go from (dyed) red hair to pastel pink and she was very straight with me about the red color possibly not coming off very well and she didn't want to put my hair through too much bleach because it's very fine. I had been kind of expecting that anyway but I liked how she explained everything to me and the end result turned out amazing, it was like pastel rose gold ❤️

i had a hair stylist at jcpennys when i was like 13, who was straightening my hair and getting really close to my scalp to the point of actually burning it. the first time i let it slide but he did it another time and i let him know "hey you're getting too close to the roots and it's burning the skin" and he said "stop being a baby". never went back to jcpenny's/mall salons ever again after that.

I am a hairdresser of 10 years now. My first job at a salon out of school, my boss said she could take me from black hair to platinum blonde. She BURNED my scalp! 40 volume on the scalp then followed with a toner and 20 volume peroxide. Yikes. I had bubbling sores. The skin peeled off days later and itched a lot. Never again. I’m lucky I didn’t lose hair

Just something that I thought about when you talked about requesting a student for a service, if you request that student, you can actually help them get a request/salesmanship mark. I am a cosmetology student and I've been on the floor accepting clients for about a month now. I don't know how it is with other schools (I would assume it would be about the same), but at least at my school, we have to get a total of I think 25 salesmanship/request marks. So if someone sees that a student did some really good work and maybe wants the same thing done, calling and requesting them for the service helps them out so much!! Plus it feels really good to know that someone likes our work enough to come back to us again! Love all your content Sam!!

It makes me respect your opinion more, because you understand why people think certain things about the industry and you don't just brush off their concerns. Instead you understand where they come from and why they feel that way but you can also give your opinion from a professional standpoint and how as a professional, you feel a certain way about something or how things are different than they seem. I'm not even a hairstylist and I don't think I even want to be and I'm still in school, but it's interesting to learn more about this stuff especially being in the clients shoes

My dad tried to get it comped but the lady explained that she had explained in our consultation that it was only gonna be highlights, but i dont remember her saying that because it felt like she wasnt fully listening and was trying to talk me out of it. I remember I went to this new stylist once just to get my roots done and have some left over color removed. I sit in the chair & show the girl a pic of highlighted roots & explain what I want & the first thing she does is look at my side shave and tells me it’s all broken off/split ends and there’s no way she can do it. Like yes ma’am all my hairs had a meeting and decided to all break off in one neat square and at the exact same length 🤨 when I explain it’s a side shave, she then makes up the excuse that my hair is too damaged. I mean no my hairs not perfect but the way she made it sound was if I looked at it wrong it would all fall off. Also my hairs naturally curly & I brushed it out beforehand so idk if that was her reference for how “damaged” it was but... she also walked away for literally 10 seconds, came back and tried to tell me the “color specialist” looked at my hair from the other end of the salon and said it was too damaged. Like ma’am if you’re gonna bullshit me at least make it believable lmao

I stopped going to a stylist because she talked down to me after like 5 years of going to her. Two things happened. One time, when I got home and styled my own hair the next day, I decided it wasn't exactly what I asked for. I felt that way in chair too but I was so scared to say anything. My mom made me text her and tell her the next day (I was in high school) because I had a panic attack. She full on berated me for waiting until the next day. I was so upset. Then a few years later: she always preferred text messages to schedule appointments. She would sometimes not reply until maybe 9pm. I had kept forgetting to schedule and sent her a message around 10pm, thinking it was fine because she replied late sometimes and most everyone I knew had text tones on vibrate so I assumed it was fine and she would reply the next day. She sent me the most hateful "don't you ever text me this late again, I thought there was an emergency" blah blah. I shouldn't have assumed, but it popped in my head and I wanted to send it before I forgot. Didn't think much of it because she replied late/outside of business hours, etc. I was pretty much done after that

I'm pretty lucky, my only truly bad haircut story was back when I was 10 and this guy thought chin length meant having it to the bottom of my years. I was also asking for layers at that time, so think of a ten year old girl with little girl bangs up top and the "can I speak to the manager?" haircut underneath yeah... I had a friend's birthday party that day too! But it was fine, I was able to laugh about it with my friends, and it grew out.

I remember working an ABA (Allied Beauty Association) hair show (Canada). It was my 4th show (2007ish) working with a very well known color/product company and I had finally after 3 years of volunteering been on team as a hired professional. Hair shows are usually for showing more avant garde hairstyles or extremes of new techniques etc. We were doing model prep the day before (colors, cuts to set up for the “fake” hair being done the next day). I offered the take on a model who was to be a cotton candy pink. As I was starting, I was told I was doing it wrong by another girl trying to “upstage” me and everyone. She took over and then took 4 hrs to apply a full head foils, a blonde card, with no hair left out in between. You could tell the model was uncomfortable, but was toughing it out for the show. She had been rinsed and her hair felt like cotton candy. She was toned 3 times with the light pink and then went home. The model showed up at 5:30am to set up, she pulled me aside and showed me her hair saying she didn’t do anything to her hair but the roots looked really dark. To my horror, when I looked her at her scalp, it was one huge scab. Her “stylist” showed up late and wondered why (after discussion with the preforming artists) I was soaking her scalp (for almost an hr) at the makeshift sinks. The scab had come off and her scalp was feeling better. The pink stayed, but was disgusted with the stylist and she was not hired going forward. The model went home with every single product the line carried and higher up phone numbers to make sure any medical costs were covered. Surprisingly the model came back the next year to do the show again. Would not allow stylists to use bleach though! Completely understandable!

Gracie Max omg that’s horrible!!! It’s one thing to not know what you’re doing and mess up, but to act cocky and try to show up everyone else and then burn your model is just embarrassing! So glad the model was ok and you were able to remedy the situation as much as possible. Hopefully that stylist learned a big lesson that day!

Sam Vay absolutely! What I love about being a stylist (I started when I was almost 15 - my high school had an apprenticeship program) for 23 years is that you are constantly learning! There is always new. It’s humbling. Once you think you know everything, you should quit your job! No room for cockiness! Ive always looked at “redos” or unhappy clients as a pull back or a “reset on reality”. Learn, was it communication? Was is an incorrect approach? Just learn! And also pass on knowledge! People can take the knowledge they want, and leave the rest! Great videos! I hope you are healthy and safe! I hope you are faring well through this covid. I haven’t touched hair (other than my own) in a month! For some reason my husband sees it as a “let’s see how long I can get my hair” because he’s not in the office! Haha

I had a bad breakup and some emotional stuff all in a week. Had eyelash extensions and sobbed like a baby for a few days. I think my tears ended up softening the glue and it ran into my eyes. I had eye burning, blurriness, pain, and the glue like dried up and flaked our my eyes.
@styledbysamvay4 жыл бұрын
That's really weird and shouldn't have happened.... it makes me question what kind of glue was used. After the first few hours of getting them applied, you can get them wet without any problems. If you get them wet before that, the worst that will happen is some of the extensions will fall off.

Hey girl I think this is the video I watched the other day w the story of the cluster lash disaster. Well I got my lashes before NYE at this place that I thought offered like one to two day wear cluster lashes. I didn’t know they were using permanent lash glue until the woman was done and mentioned that they should last for about 2 weeks. This has been a terrible experience the lashes were glued to my eyelids so every time they loosened up it was painful they layered cluster lash on top of cluster lash which I read you’re not supposed to do and they used the glue meant for individual lashes only. As a result when the cluster finally falls off it’s taking my real lashes with it. Do you have any products serums etc for ash regrowth that you could recommend for trying to regrow my lashes after this mess?

This happened four years ago, and I’m not super angry about it now but at the time I was kinda like oh. I had gone to a salon that my friends used to go to. It was just a walk in appointment for a haircut. The girl had washed my hair and was combing it and then chuckles and says in a snooty voice ummm you know you have bald spots right? And i was confused because I dont typically see the back of my head and my hair is super thick so it isn’t noticeable unless you are literally doing my hair. She basically explains that because i box dyed my hair once i gave myself bald spots. Yeah fast forward four years and i found out the reason I had those spots is because I had very progressed graves disease. Im not too angry that she didn’t recognize it as that. I know it is taught, but she was def newer and probs hasnt seen it before; however the attitude she had as if the one time i box dyed my hair did that to me was ridiculous.

when going to a salon are we suppose to stay with 1 stylist ? I got my hair done once by a stylist I found on IG because my stylist had moved. About 6 months have passed and I wanted something else and I went and searched the name of the salon again because I had forgot the stylists name but I found out that another stylist in the same salon did work which I liked more and seemed to have more experience with what I wanted and booked an appt with her. I wanted to go from balayage to all blonde. it was time for my second appt with the second stylist and Upon my arrival to the salon the first stylist which I had only been to once pulled the other stylist aside behind a curtain and told her I was "her" client. I was thinking "her Client? seriously?" I didn't tell her hey I heard y'all talking I didn't want to make it uncomfortable for me so I just sat there super embarrassed until my session was over with. I have never been back and im still looking for a stylist I love. most just care about getting you and getting you out.

it actually freaks me out the cosmetology experience in the united states vs australia. in Australia to do skin care waxing ect you need to study beauty therapy. Thats an entire industry in and of its own with a years course. doing hairdressing can only be done if you get a job as an apprentice and you do a full week with the salon and one day a week for 3 years at a hair school. So when you graduate you had 3 years worth of salon work.

Oh I have some BAD hair stories... one lady burned the back of my neck with the blow dryer and then cut my bangs so sloppily and made my hair so frizzy I looked like a poodle. Another stylist didn’t dry my hair all the way and just put hella product in it and I looked like someone in an 80’s glam rock band. I could go on...

Um.. yeah. Your EYEBALLS are not to be taken lightly. ...and THIS ladies & gentlemen is why I'm scared to visit any salon (especially after a bald spot on the side of my head happened due to a salon bleaching incident.) I actually felt bad for the stylist who did it to me because I know she didn't mean to. It was one just of those things... hearing these stories kinda makes me feel like I'm not the only one who has gone through this kind of thing.

With the last story he absolutely should have refunded her especially because of him she now had an ER bill from the chemical burns he caused and causing her to also lose sleep

tbh the esthetician who went to the beauty school had too high of expectations, if she went to a full on salon and that happened to her , her reaction would be justified. but she probably made the students feel really uncomfortable by crying and running out. instead of asking them to fix the things she was unhappy with so they could learn..even if she was having a bad day, it doesn't mean you have to bring it on other people, especially learning students. no hate, but just an observation.

True! I was thinking the same thing, but she was also in high school, so she was really young and probably really stressed over prom, so I can't fault her too much. If this was a grown woman we were talking about, that'd be a whole different story lol!

@@styledbysamvay that's right i forgot she was in high school lmao, I guess in my mind i was always the type where im really introverted and couldn't imagine breaking down in a room full of people

also yes! At my esthetician school we brought our own clients and we always made sure that they knew it was students performing students..i mean we are there to learn so it was nice and really helpful

Im not understanding why anyone would go to a nail salon to get lash extensions 99% of the time they are not lash techs just some random person with crazy strong glue.
