Cliff Burton is... Cliff Burton. There is no comparing him. He's the pioneer. Rob is amazing. He is a great bassist and does his predecessors justice. Jason is a beast live. No other band can say they had Satan on backing vocals. If I saw Metallica live I would want Jason there. Creeping Death is just missing something without Jason's vocals.

Jason and Robert are AMAZING bass players and any band would be better for having them. Cliff was a 1 in 1,000,000 musician, all around. His knowledge of theory, composition, appreciation for music as a whole etc etc was immense, especially for his age and the times. Cliff Burton would have become a VERY seriously important figure in music had tragedy not struck him. I whole heartedly believe this.

It's a no contest for Cliff ! people constantly say how great .. of a player Rob is . But forget that Cliff was only 24 years old , when he died . And look at all he contributed to the band , Orion being their greatest instrumental .Rob was much older when he joined the band , and had way more time to perfect his playing . And aside from that , on a creative level in 17 years .. has not been able to give them anything close to Cliff . Rob is just a skilled bassist , that can get up their a play tight with them on stage . Creatively he isn't on Cliffs level , or does he have the stage energy Jason brought to their live shows .

@tristanhavrilak6048
@tristanhavrilak6048 3 жыл бұрын
The reason why he started out with a pick is because he literally tore the flesh off his fingers playing bass with fingers. So that's why it's his go-to. Plus tone. Plus, David ellefson uses a pick. Phil Lynnot? He used a pick. Sometimes, even John Paul Jones used a pick. Those are some of the most legendary players of all time too.
@zakky2207
@zakky2207 3 жыл бұрын
He play with pick because he chose to. When you play bass with finger in stage, it does't actually cut through the song. And because of Jason's brutal attitude in live performance, he chose to make the bass as brutal as possible. (I think) In the end of the day, pick in bass is just a choise. It depends on you.

This is my thought process. I could be mistaken but.. people always say Jason’s live energy is the best.but the truth is , we don’t have nearly enough proshot footage of cliff to even begin to compare them. Even Jason himself spoke of standing Infront of cliff and watching him preform, the impact it left on him. Some people say if you never saw them live with cliff, you never saw Metallica . We only wish the soundboard audio and bootlegs of that time could do the man justice. We just have the memory’s of the audience and the guys in the band to try and piece together an image. Wish time machines were mainstream:/

I knew Metallica in 1988, Jason an Rob are simply great but Cliff…one of the greatest loss for music of all times. So young, poor guy what a destiny. He should be celebrated like Jimi Hendrix. Jason represents prime Metallica, experienced, the great music, and their path to being one of the best metal bands ever, in my opinion. Rob represents the final stage of Metallica, refined, very experienced and putting their names in the history books. Once again this is all my opinion.

As much as I love Newstead, even more than I love Cliff. If Cliff hadn't written those earlier bass lines, Jason wouldn't have had those original arrangements to, in some ways, improve upon. Like, clearly, Cliff was a massive unfluence on Jason, I'm sure I read somewhere that Jason auditioned by playing the entire bass for the Master Of Puppets album. And alot like Cliff, he was a second front man for metallica in a way. Trujillo is another entity again. I loved his work with suicidal tendancies.

Rob is an INSANELY good bassist, one of if not the best in the genre. Cliff's innovation will never be matched, however. Cliff's songwriting and use of melody took Metallica to the next level. Lo que puedo decir: Cliff fue el primero y único que me hizo amar el bajo y la energía de Jason con su único estilo le dio el toque a Metallica, con razón dejé de escucharlos cuando se fue, la base de Metallica era el bajo

Tuesday marks 35 years since Cliffs tragic death. One can ONLY wonder what the lives of Cliff and the rest of Metallica would've turned into if he lived on. Cliff was a MUSICIAN that happened to love bass. He was so young, 21, when he first recorded with Metallica and 24 at death. We've had barely a glimpse of would could've been. Jason, great performer and back up to James but IMO not an innovator. Robert, a true performer, solid, and possibly a great lead guitarist if he had chosen that path. He knows his role and performs admirably. One can only wish he would push himself to come up with some truly innovative solo work within Metallica's music. At his age I wonder if there are truly any creative juice left or is there zero room to innovate due to the egos of his bandmates?

I can’t disagree with most of the comments here. For me it’s a no brainer. I’ll take Cliff every time. I got to see him live on the supporting tours for Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets. He was a pioneer and the most talented member of Metallica. R.I.P. Cliff.

I really can't compare any of them to each other, but without Cliff, I don't think Jason or Rob would have ever played in Metallica because I don't think Metallica would have become the biggest metal band of all time and one of the top 5 rock bands period. I have always loved Rob but recently have become increasingly appreciative of what Jason brought to the band.

The answer is EASY, it is neither one nor the other. All of them have been necessary to break down the barriers at the beginning, increase performance and sustain strength over time. So let's stop debating and be thankful for the three of them.

From a guy who dont understand nothing about chords and technique and all of what you experts all talking, my answer would probably be more Simple than yours. U cant put trujillo in the same spot of cliff and jason, Metallica best songs were wrote by them , and thats unfortunate cuz rob is a Hell of a bass player. For me Jason is the Number 1 because he was still able to write songs and perfom for 15 YEARS while being bullied by james and kirk, AJFA is the ultimate bully attack, their lost was so unbearable that they never wanted to listen bass again. Cliff for me is a Hell of a songwriter and musician cuz he show the band how to make great music (Messing With Melodies is one of the things he shown) But for me Jason was/is and Will always be the soul of Metallica
