You got to realize how historic this was. This was the first concert of a US Band in the USSR and it was during the end of its very existence. The USSR was formally ended in December of 91 but it began with the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. The fact this concert was allowed to even take place signaled to the world that the USSR was dead.

They say the helicopters were the "sooth" the crowd, but actually they were using the downdraft to get fresh air down into the crowd. The back of the crowd was over a mile from the stage. At 18 I wanted to be there... at 56 all I can think is... how far away are the bathrooms?

I reckon it would've been a case of eat the bare minimum, to try and keep your bowels as empty as possible, and drink just enough to keep hydrated. The combination of body odour, perspiration and urine would have been quite pungent. 🤢 🙃🐨🇦🇺

This was the Monsters Of Rock concert. AC/DC was here, too. You should see Pantera's Domination from this concert as well. What you're witnessing is freedom. After they ran out of their small number of tickets, it became free. You just had to show up. What no one expected was the entire country showing up- The helicopter was there to keep people cool, since the body heat was so immense.

I wanted to be there so badly that I spent a small fortune back then to team up with a bunch of people to umm...hack the shit out of this broadcast and spread it to as many humans as possible. People were all over the world melting thru CPU's into nothing just so as many people could listen in as possible. Music was a lethal weapon back then. Ideas were a lethal weapon back then. This is why so many of us fought tooth an nail in whatever aspect we could.

thats not fog - it's humidity from the sweat of 1.6 million bodies clustered together. It left a literal haze over the area. The helicopters served both as security/surveillance from the air, but they actually fanned the crowd by moving the air.

It is like the end of a war-the Cold War. Exactly the crowd you would expect to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first entry of American Rockers into the USSR for a free concert no less. It was on a military base, and absolutely insane. I’ve watched this video more times than I can count. It never gets old. 1991 was an epic time to be alive. 🤟🏼

I came to comment that there seems to be zero health & safety procedures in place at this gig so finding out that people died at it would have been inevitable given the conditions the crowd were left in. I doubt there was access to drinking water, I shudder to think of the state the portaloos must've been in, if they even had any that is.. Then there would've been an intense crush to get out of the venue after the gig- that could've been whrn people were killed... The bsnd sounded great. But then again a Metallica always do

The towers you see are speaker and screen setup so everyone can see and hear the concert. This was the first western music concert after the berlin wall fell. Story goes they issued over 500,000 tickets for the show so many people showed up for tickets or at least to hear the show that they just opened the gates and let them in.

I love your sentiment about seeing the flags from all over the world. Seeing all of the camaraderie and knowing the sociopolitical backdrop of that place at that time is kinda mind blowing. This concert was one of the last death rattles of the USSR. The Berlin Wall had fallen, the iron curtain was parting and the Cold War was all but over. This show was the West winning the most crucial part of the Cold War, the war of culture. Nukes and Capitalism didn’t topple the USSR, art did. If you take away people’s ability to freely express and experience art, they will yearn for that freedom more than food and water. If the USSR had allowed its citizens to freely be themselves without fear of imprisonment or worse, then the Cold War would have ended VERY differently. Instead, what we see is millions of people finally getting an emotional outlet they haven’t had in most of their lifetimes. That experience for a lot of them had to be nothing short of transcendent and that makes me so fucking happy to think about. Art is cool. Also, I’d love to see you peep some Silent Planet! Specifically “Panic Room”. As a hiphop head I think you’ll really dig the lyricism. Cheers!

This concert was shown on PPV back when it happened. I had a copy of it on VHS that I recorded from the PPV event. The first of its kind, really... US bands playing in Moscow after 40-odd years of hostility between countries..... was something we never thought we'd see. Remember, it was called the Cold War, because no direct armed conflicts happened between the US and USSR (there were some "Proxy" conflicts, but all "contained" to outside of either country). I've seen a LOT of history in my lifetime, and it would take quite a while to list them all.... but this was one of them. The Cold War had basically ended, and oppression in that part of the world lightened up. It's actually bizarre to see how far backwards the world has moved. There is a new "Cold War", with a "Proxy War" again at the forefront. Will we see this conflict expand into WWIII? We can at least hope that WWIII will not be a nuclear war, though that possibility exists, and is closer to reality than it's been in 35 years. It's almost maddening to witness, when peace was so close to being fully achieved back then.

On September 28, 1991, the Tushino Airfield in Moscow hosted the Monsters of Rock international music festival. AC/DC, Metallica, the Black Crowes, and Pantera all performed, while the metal band Electro Shock Therapy represented the Soviet Union. Another show that blew the doors out of the crowed was the Charlie Daniels Band in Sarasota Florida. The song you gotta check out from that show is the song, The Devil Went Down to Georgia, as a rapper you will appreciate this absolute legendary performance. Again, it's not the size of the crowed, but the crowed was completely lit up.

I’m with you, Cliff, that number of people would give me instant anxiety. Metallica is one of those bands I wish I could see live… They are and have been and always will be one of my top faves. But, I don’t go to concerts anymore as the thought of being that close to a lot of people in a crowd gets me anxious ! The pandemic amplified those feelings 100 fold and now I’m not willing to take the risk.

It wasn't a stadium, it was an open field, after the end of USSR and opening of Russia. This Monsters of Rock was insane. I saw it on MTV by that time. They had Metallica, AC/DC, Pantera. Its was the first real concert in Moscow after the Cold War. It was about 1 million people there the biggest concert ever made. They not even know how to behave (the army securities). There was many "police Violence" because they didn't know what a Heavy Metal concert was supposed to be. There is a "documentary" that you can find in youtube about this festival

This is AC/DC’s crowd. When the Russian youth were asked what they wanted as a reward for supporting their he uprising. They asked for AC/DC. And was only for the fact that they were already on tour headlining Monsters of Rock, in Europe that decision was made to bring them here tour over to Moscow.

You can probably blame my first husband's mother for some of that! She used to travel to the CCCP regularly. She took records with her and sold them on the black market. She always said that the sales easily paid for the entire trip! (Her husband had a job that required the travel and got him 'privileges').

I’ve seen Metallica live in the 80s and let me tell you you have not seen a crowd it’s insane! I was front row right up against the stage. I thought I was gonna pass out. There was so many people it was so hot and I couldn’t move at all. It was a crazy night. I couldn’t hear for like a week after the concert.
