It was just before the Soviet fall, an effort to allow a little Western stuff in for those other than the Party elite and hold power a bit longer. It was a kind of Monsters of Metal, Metallica being 1 of 4 bands to play. The helicopters flying back and forth were trying to stir up the air as there was worry the people in the middle would not get enough oxygen - there were several deaths reported, in fact, but none officially chalked up to asphyxiation.

After they run the tickets out, the rest of people that show-up got in for free, at this rock/metal monster concert not just Metallica played also AC/DC, Black Panther & The Crows among other.. 54 people were reported death (not sure how many injuries), helicopters were trying to cool the heat from so many fans & people side by side, imagine you are in the middle of such crowd and need to go to toilet.. the army soldiers were overwhelmed and eventually as we seen on the clip some of them took of caskets & clothes to flag them above the crowd.. But this is only the 5 or 6 position of biggest live concerts, the biggest was Rod Stewart who was performing to a 4,6 millions of people and 2,3 & 4 positions Jean Michele Jare live concerts..

About 300 thousand spectators came and came from other cities to the concert with the participation of PANTHERA, BLACK CROSE, METALLIKA, AS / DS and our EST. This concert was guarded by 11 thousand people: police, riot police, internal troops, rifle divisions of the Soviet Army. When the first bottles fell on their heads and two soldiers were taken away by an ambulance, angry law enforcement officers began to rush at anyone they did not like, beating people with their hands, feet and clubs. The space in front of the stage literally turned into a bloody battle that did not stop from the very beginning of the concert until midnight. According to the ambulance station, 56 people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, of which 16 were military personnel." Oleg PSHENICHNY Photo by L. LAZAREV "Horizon №12'1991

That black kite shaped guitar the lead singer is using is his trademark guitar. He has it in cream/white and silver I think aswell. Info on this concert. 1.6million people, 53 people died. This was set at the Russian Airfield, they used helicopters overhead to create draft for all the people, as you imagine the heat 1.6million people would create. This was a gift to the people by the government this concert, right after the Iron Curtain came down on USSR /the Soviet union. In reality, western music wasn't allowed to be listened to, if you were caught with any you'd be hung, shot or jailed for it. Very intensely strict regime. Most hadn't seen or heard of western or other music apart from classical before this. The soldiers are the soldiers from the regime, who were there to crowd control, but most were like "no way, were with them and gonna enjoy ourselves."

You might check out Metallica's S&M album. Which actually stands for Symphony & Metal. The band was joined by the San Francisco Symphony - and no, Metallica did not go unplugged. If you like the driving bass drum intro for Enter Sandman, you will love hearing the bass drum kick joined by timpani, kettledrums. When they did this live, orchestra members were scared half to death by the waiting crowd roaring at them - not the reaction their regular audiences give them. The joint collaboration was the idea of the symphony conductor, who wrote the music for how his people would join into Metallica's songs.

This concert was amazing; they were playing in Moscow, the first time a group of western bands had been allowed to play in the former Soviet Union (this is why you see the soldiers and the helicopters, the authorities still believed that this would taint their population with 'western influence'.) The fact that some of the troops placed there to keep the crowd cowed and under control were also just vibing with the music shows how much western soft power (good music, jeans, freedom in general) had to do with the end of the Cold War going our way. (I know this stuff first hand, while this show was happening I was stationed in Korea facing off the North, who still haven't given up on the Cold War).

Supposed to be the first open-air rock concert to register on the Richter Scale. Not because they (may) have outdone 'The Who' Guinnes Book of World Records at 126 decibels. Apparently they just stopped counting at 1.6 million said "Nyet" and just opened the gates. So, ~2 million people, all jumping, is 150,000 tons. That's roughly one thousand blue whales. This was free and the only place large enough was a military airfield. Those military helicopters flying overhead were armed and were there to protect the stage and would have fired on the crowd if they got out of hand. This was a truly historic event (this video is in the Library of Congress) as this was the end of the Cold War (Berlin Wall had just been torn down 2 years earlier) the end of the Soviet Union and this was the 1st time western bands were allowed to play in the USSR. They say there were 1.6 million people - but they don't mention they stopped counting at 1.6 million. During the next song Creeping Death that entire crowd jumped simultaneously yelling Die! Die! Die! to the USSR (and they meant it!) and set off seismometers miles away!

Some concerts go down in history and the 1991 ‘Monsters of Rock’ festival in Moscow was no exception. Known as one of the biggest concerts to ever take place, with a huge 1.6 million attendees, it marked the most momentous of performances for the heavy metal band Metallica. The record-breaking crowds that day are thought to have only been seen on four other occasions. Monsters of Rock was a series of rock concerts that first started in 1980. What was intended as a one-off event, soon became a yearly celebration of heavy metal, growing in momentum and attendance, and traveling across the world. 1991 was a historical year for that year’s host Moscow, with a series of events that ultimately led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its Communist rule. The hosting of the country’s first, free open-air rock concert in Tushino Airfield was as a result, incredibly significant to the people of Russia. It was these factors that make the Monsters of Rock performance, the favorite tour moment for lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter of Metallica James Hetfield. The electrical lineup that day was made up by the likes of AC/DC, The Black Crowes and Mötley Crüe, but it was Metallica who attracted and stole the heavy metal hearts of over 1.6 million fans. In video footage of the iconic performance, ten years after the band first formed, helicopters can be seen trying to calm the excitable rock fans. In the crowds, there is a surprising site of military personnel, shedding their uniforms and letting loose to the headbanging tunes.

Supposedly the helicopters flying over were used as giant fans to help keep people from heat stroking. Also did you notice the towers in the distance? They were speaker towers that had to be set up with a delay because the sound would get so distorted at those distances.
