James wrote this song when he thought his dad was going to die. He had stage 4 kidney disease. Miraculously, a donor was found in time to save , as far as I know, his dad is still alive and now well. A beautiful song which pulls at your heartstrings. I've recently lost both my parents and cherish every moment I had with them. I thought we'd have more time. You always think there'll be more time. Life is short. Appreciate every day.❤

That is Jame's Dad sitting next to him in the clip. Jame's Dad was dying of Kidney disease and James wrote this to him as a goodbye as they could not find a matching kidney donor for his Dad. Every tear is real, as James thought he was going to lose his Dad very soon. When this was release, a distant relative saw the clip and got tested. He was a match for Jame's Dad and because of this song....Jame's Dad is still alive due to him getting the life saving kidney transplant.

Both James and his father are ex-soldiers who have seen action. Because he was an Officer some people sneer at him - but I think he is wonderful. That is his father sitting by his side; dying it was believed because a donor couldn't be found to give him a kidney transplant. The biggest miracle of this heartbreaking song is that a distant relative on the other side of the world heard the song and learned the reason behind it. He offered to be tested and was a SUCCESSFUL donor! James's father is still alive. 💞

James was a tank commander in Iraq (and also a friend of Bear Grylls). He (as a British officer) refused an order to attack Russian (who were allies) by a US Officer at an air field. He is a really really amazing, self deprecating, and humorous guy.

My dad was unconscious for 3 weeks before he died 5 years ago. I spent every day with him talking, reading poetry, holding his hand, playing music and singing (badly) to him. I was terrified in case he was locked into his subconscious with nightmares and I wanted him to have peace. This song takes me right back there. I hope i kept his monsters away as he always did for me as a child.

The very first time I heard this song was when I got into my car in the hospital garage in the early morning after spending the night with my step-dad in intensive care. He had just had a heart attack and they found that also had stage 4 lung cancer, so we both knew what that meant. Although he was my step-dad, he never treated me as anything but his son and he had been in my life since I was 4 years old. We both knew he was dying, and I got to tell him how much I appreciated him and how much he meant to me and how I appreciated him for beingthe dad he didnt have to be, and he told me how much he loved me and was proud of me. I'm so glad we got to talk that night. When I got in the car that morning, this song came on as soon as I turned the key. I just sat there and listened, and I was completely wrecked. I'm a 6'2" 220 lb man and I was sobbing while listening to this song. It was so incredibly sad but also cathartic for me. It's one of the most heartfelt songs ever written and I appreciate James Blunt for writing it.

It was James Father,James his father is Colonel Charles Blount, a man with a distinguished military career that has seen him inhabit the ranks of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars as a cavalry officer before becoming a helicopter pilot and colonel of the Army Air Corps. Blount (which is where James’ Blunt stage name comes from) was clearly a huge inspiration to his son who followed his father into military service, a long-standing tradition in the Blount family which reportedly dates as far back as the 10th century

James Blunt has a very unique voice and is a great musician. He has a very interesting backstory as far as both his career and this song (in particular go).....worth reading up on. When you listen to some of his other tracks like "You're beautiful" and "Goodbye my Lover", you'll probably/possibly recognize him. He's a man of many talents. A former reconnaissance officer in the Life Guards regiment of the British Army, he served under NATO during the 1999 Kosovo War where he rose to the rank of captain. His father, a colonel in the British Army Air Corps ,was also a military helicopter pilot. James got his pilot's license at age 16. He gained an army-sponsored place at the University of Bristol, where he first studied aerospace manufacturing engineering and then subsequently moved on to the study of sociology. He graduated with a BSc in sociology in 1996. This was all prior to his music career. "In 1999, he served as an armored reconnaissance officer in the NATO deployment in Kosovo. Initially assigned to reconnaissance of the Republic of Macedonia-Yugoslavia border, Blunt and his unit worked ahead of the front lines directing forces and targeting Serb positions for the NATO bombing campaign. His unit was given the assignment of securing the Pristina International Airport in advance of the 30,000-strong peacekeeping force; however the Russian army had moved in and taken control of the airport before his unit's arrival. American NATO commander Wesley Clark ordered that Blunt and his unit forcibly take the airport from the Russian contingent, but Blunt refused to comply. There were less intense moments during Blunt's Kosovo assignment. Blunt had brought along his guitar, strapped to the outside of his tank. At some places, the peacekeepers would share a meal with hospitable locals, and Blunt would perform. It was while on duty there that he wrote the song "No Bravery". A keen skier, Blunt captained the Household Cavalry alpine ski team in Verbier, Switzerland, eventually becoming champion skier of the entire Royal Armored Corps. He had extended his military service in November 2000, and after an intensive six-month army riding course was posted to the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in London, England. During this posting, Blunt was interviewed about his responsibilities on the television program "Girls on Top", a series highlighting unusual career choices. He stood guard at the coffin of the Queen Mother during the days of her lying in State and was part of the funeral procession on 9 April 2002. Blunt left the army on 1 October 2002 having served six years. Yes, it's his Dad in this...that's another story. His musical career includes many top 10 and number 1 hits, including Grammy Awards. He is funny, talented and a great musician.

For ALL the shit he's copped about his song Beautiful over the years, the man has some fucking talent. He's also got a great sense of humour about the shit he's copped (recently threatening to release MORE music on Spotify if they didn't deplatform anti-vaxxers), but this song and No Bravery show perfectly how deep his material can go...MUCH respect for him here. Also, one of the more powerful things about this song is that I read somewhere that James' dad is your typical 'stiff upper lip' type of military man who's never been overly demonstrative of his emotions (though he apparently never actually withheld love or anything, he just had that typical-British way of showing it), and so James was somewhat the same with his dad, so this song is a HUGE outpouring of love

Yeah from a producer's perspective his voice is 'all over the place', not so much with the pitch itself, so nothing auto-tune would fix, but other aspects that a producer would offer to 'correct' or enhance using tools like equalisers, compressors, de-essers and perhaps even combining vocals from several takes, but if touching up the vocals means losing the emotion that's a bad idea for this song. I'm sure the debate in the studio would have been very short.

This song hits me deep in the feels. Me and my mom were my dad’s caretakers during his battle w/ cancer, and I can’t exactly remember when we went from being father and son to two grown men, but it did indeed happen.

Great emotional video. He did sing "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye, My Lover." Unfortunately, the US market wasn't smart enough to release more albums.

❤. You were absolutely correct that James deserves an award just for his ability to express his emotions in this video while still holding it together enough to deliver it so very well.

We have seen 'The Captain' three times, twice at the same small venue in Carcassonne. You got to concerts to hear great music, dance and have fun with friends and family, yet suddenly, he comes out with a song that hits you so hard that you cry. Not just once, but two to three times at the most recent gig. He has had a lot of abuse in the past over his voice and songs, but there are many people who delight in the way he is. You can see the emotion in the man as he sings this song. It's something you often see at the concert too. Those screens show everything! Keep it up sir, just don't write an album of soulful songs, as great as it would be, I don't think I could handle it emotionally.😅

Jeesh! Okay, I never heard this one (even though James Blunt was pretty regularly on the radio) - possibly because it would cause lots of accidents on the roads from all the people tearing up. I'm crying, too. Gonna go play cards with my parents now and have some good time with them. (also, thanks to all the comments who told me the dad didn't die - makes me a lot better, lol!)

Such an incredibly perfect song. And watching the video, seeing him next to his father, while, at this time, he was going to die. I can’t believe James even got through it without breaking down completely. Your reaction was truly from the heart, and I loved how real It was, and how much it moved you. I can’t honestly imagine anyone hearing this song, and not relating to it in some way. I lost my father when I was 19 and he was in every way one of the best people I have ever known. Thank you for opening yourself up to this reaction.

To me him saying "I'll read a story to you, only this one is true" is telling me this is a real event that he is and has or will be dealing with and that is also relatable to the ones listening who have parents that at some point they will be dealing with something similar even if it isn't until down the road even if the specifics are different, it's still relatable. ♥️
