I don’t think it’s about Whistledown doing the world a service. It’s more that woman are not allowed a voice in that time. Outside of the Queen and lady Danbury women’s purpose was marriage and babies. They weren’t writers and lawyers, etc. whistledown is a business & has carved out power and influence in the ton. She has managed to allude the Queen so I think many ppl look up to and are intrigued by her. I actually really appreciate that Eloise took accountability for her own actions. It has only been a few days. At most a week since Colin proposed & they slept together. Most of the time they get married in one month after an engagement. She passed out at their engagement party and she was “sick” for a couple days.

Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury's purpose was marriage and babies, at least having them. Agatha had four but Charlotte had fifteen, and, as queen consort (the king's wife), it was a very big deal that she have a baby.

She DOESNT really have a voice , she is only Giving a LOUDER voice to rumors and gossips,thats why Eloise stopped liking her in s2 because she could ACTUALLY use her voice for good or change, but she was bussy outting or running other WOMEN 😅😂

Thing is Pen didn’t know what sex was, she was still a debutante and the carriage and the house, Colin initiated all of that. You can’t say she was in the wrong for not saying anything before that because she didn’t plan any of it. Colin took the lead there completely.

It’s not just romance gossip. Everyone in the ton consumes Whistledown. She has power, so much sway the Queen of fucking England sees her as a worthy opponent. Gossip is information. Penelope gets information about every one in society, and she unmasks them. They all put on a front and pretend they are pristine and classy, but they all gossip and mock others, compete and scheme. Penelope put a mirror in front of the rich and privilege and shows them: this is how you are, and it’s not pretty. Yes, she is rich and privilege, but she is also set aside, ostracized, by her own peers, her own family, even her two best friends -Eloise doesn’t perceive her, Colin bashed her in front of eligible bachelors. She has the power to destroy reputations (not that they will not recover, they are still rich and titled, but it will bruise their egos). So no, they don’t act as if it’s a bit thing, it is a big thing. She debut at 17, and at 17 she formed an enterprise that openly mocked and entertained society. A girl from a disgraced name, abused and ignored by her family, with no prospects, managed that. She was never seen, but she made herself heard with the power of her pen. So yeah, hard to give up a thing that once was your only hope for the future (you gotta know she’s making bank).

This was very eloquently expressed! 🙏❤ I think this is why I have loved her character even with all the secrecy and whatnot. 🤷 As a person who values honesty and openness, it can be hard to relate to someone who lives a whole double life like that, and I definitely find myself relating to Eloise more, but I certainly have a great respect for what Penelope has built for herself. When living in a corrupt society, it means anyone who profits and gets ahead in their life is benefiting from, at minimum, some measure of exploitation. So, what Penelope does to earn her coin is not really different than what anyone else in that era and class setting have been doing to earn theirs. Yes, if she begins to use her pen to do good for others going forward, that will be a much better thing than what she has been doing thus far, definitely. But she wouldn't have the power to put that pen to good use if she hadn't first made everyone salivate and gasp over her juicy tidbits of scandalous secret knowledge. Pen had to get her hands dirty to plant the seeds, in order to reap the harvest, and now that the hard part is done (hopefully soon 🙏) some decent and deserving folks (the voiceless, as she says here) will be able to feast on the fruits of her labour. Do the ends ALWAYS justify the means? No, absolutely not. Can they, perhaps, in Penelope's case? I guess we'll have to wait and see 🤷 Either way, can't really blame a girl for the hustle 😂

Benedict stopped painting/art stuff after he found out Anthony paid his way into school. It made him feel like he wasn’t good enough.

I wish someone had said to him: "You have the chance that other people dream of. Take the opportunity and hone your craft and help others." He met that woman artist who told him the women artists had to pose nude to find a way to attend the lectures. He could have become more important in the school and sought to change that. He could set up a fund and be a patron to other artists. Sorry! So disappointed with how that was handled.

In the books she publishes twice a week. Then she started getting help of Madam Delacroix helping her get the column to the publisher in season2 of the show.

The pacing of this season was weird and I'm glad more people are picking up on that. Sometimes it really does feel like they were trying to cram too many story lines in and most of them could shine on their own with more room to breath. Not sure if that's a Netflix issue or a production issue.

In her mind she was already ruined. She literally didn’t know what sex was. He ruined her proposal with Deblin and then everything just was a whirlwind. I literally don’t think she knew what was going on and she was swept up. You are acting like she did it to trap him. He technically trapped her! lol

Discovery of witches is a three season show based off a three book series. It is beautifully shot they go in and out of time. Vampires witches demons. But it’s more academically place than scary insanely bloodly. They stay remarkably close to the books, and again it’s beautifully shot all over France and Scotland and Ireland. It’s just gorgeous. In the actors are phenomenal.

The show writers chose to downplay the varied topics in Whistledown and made it so gossip was the focus in them. In the books Whistledown is still watching and taking in gossip but she is also commenting on society, basically writing think pieces and encouraging people to have conversations they may not normally have, and calling for accountability in others who may never otherwise be called out. It’s not just gossip letters, it’s a writing career, it’s power, Penelope makes good money for herself which women do not often have the opportunity to do in her situation.
@BrionySkerjance4 ай бұрын
I struggle with the drama they chose to build into this relationship because in the books Colin is the first one to discover Pen is Whistledown (on that same day he initiates the carriage scene after finding out he has none of the issues you mention in your discussion) and the only reason he gets mad is because he thinks she puts herself in danger. He struggles with her calling out Cressida and her wanting to write again.
@jerrih27493 ай бұрын
I think they said in the books that it was published three times a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And it said that she would sneak out during the balls because no one paid attention to her. And when she got into the carriage she raised the seat of the carriage and pulled out the cloak and that weird hat she wore. Maybe she kept writing stuff there too.

I think you guys are not getting it. She has an established job that even the queen cares about. And she did it in a time when some women didnt read and most men are sqaundering their lives away. And it is not like writing novels was something women did often. In real life you wouldn't just give that up.

The actress who plays Philippa is dating the actor who plays Benedict, and the actress who plays Prudence is dating the actor who played Lord Debling. Prudence's actress is also the daughter of the actress who played Umbridge in Harry Potter and the actor who played Carson, the butler, on _Downton Abbey._ (Feeling too tired to look up everyone's names and don't want to use just the ones I know.)

Some of what may be seen as some of the sort of sideways scenes in this part of the season, I think are really cool. Like I love hate comparing their relationship from😊 before he knows to after. There's an openness and similarity between them that is rarely seen, even amongst different kind of ton marriages! The way Penelope and Colin speak to each other and match each other is special. But how they relate and communicate with each other after he knows is amazing. So being an audience members seeing some of the hollows 😊 in the relationship that they convinced themselves was pretty whole in this epist is part of the romance story to me. Knowing where it grows to where eventually the two focus characters know more about each other than the audience knows about them.

Another great post-ep discussion. I agree with you that the show is not great at depicting (or dropping clues) about how much time has passed. I found myself wondering about that more than once. Regarding this episode: One of my favorite scenes of the season thus far was when Penelope and Eloise both acknowledged the mistakes each of them had made. And, yes, I agree that Colin finding out on his own makes it much harder for him to forgive and accept the LW lies than it would have been if Penelope had told him herself. But Bridgerton is all about the drama, right? LOL! At any rate, they have a lot of work ahead of them to come to terms with this and not much time left to do it! Also, I'm not sure since it wasn't part of your YT edit, but did you catch the closeup on Lady Cowper as she pulled up her glove to hide the ink stains on her arm? When one of you (can't remember who) said earlier in the episode that maybe Cressida's mother was a great creative writer, I laughed out loud and said, "Nailed it!"

You seem to be under the impression that Whistledown is entirely shit talking people from cover to cover. Most of it is harmless, or even complimentary. If you go back and listen to the first column in episode one, she's actually talking up all the individual debutantes, making even the awkward ones sound appealing. But if gossip is going around, she has to report it. She's not revealing anything that isn't already known and being shared. It's not like she's digging up people's secrets and exposing them to the world. The only time she revealed something that wasn't common knowledge was with Marina in season 1. Even Eloise's situation in season 2 was known by the queen and would have come out (but a worse, more damaging version) even if she hadn't chosen to write about it.
