Stunning job, both in accuracy and color management, Cliff. That was actually a daring cut, being the first go with a new machine... I don't have that much confidence and opt for an SRB first. LOL Regarding your question... On irregular step cuts, I prefer to do the opposing corners first. It seems to me to allow for an occasional cheat on the shorter "middle" facets. Hi John, I was fairly confident how to use the machine. A little unsure how the pivoting faceting head would work on the girdle. Yes, I like to start with opposing corners also and work into the middle also.

Hi Cliff, I am new to your site. I fossicked my gems from many locations in NSW and Qld between 1981 and 1991 and ended up with a lot of rough. I bought myself a brand new Gemmasta GF2 as per your 2nd machine and all the necessary accessories. At that time, I started learning to cut/facet and cut about 15 gems and made al sorts of mistakes. I am now 73 years of age, and as I used to tell my family and friends, I will save all my rough to facet when I am retired and I get Old! Well, here I am ( not as "old" as I anticipated ) and i would like to re-educate myself on the processes of faceting. I have found the 5 videos of yours that I have watched, to be most helpful so far. Thanks for taking the time to share with others.

Masterful cutting! another amazing gem Cliff. I recently faceted a piece of amethyst in a SRB and got it set in rose gold for my wife. The quartz varieties really do turn out nicely. Cheers

I'm cutting an amethyst right now, but it's taking *forever.* I ruined my last few gems by overcutting, so now I'm paranoid and going at a snail's pace. I also picked a type of cut I've never done before, so making sure the meetpoints don't get wonky is taking some extra effort.

the opposite stories happened in my country indonesia lampung province, this kind of zoning colours amethyst are the best of all including the full colour one, the called it "selendang warna" (source of colours line) to determined that amethyst is natural or not, because often time the lab created one are having the full colour.

Hi Jeff, tin laps have more porosity. The Herco is a light grade oil and absorbs into the tin changing how the polishing behaves. You can control wet or dry the lap is while polishing with Herco as it tends not to be as greasy and it dries out and you can apply more drops while polishing.

I have found the gold and the gems and wanted to make my engagement ring from and with the gold I have found. Problem I’m having is I can’t cut a stone! @@Arsopu Yes! Gold has gone up price. $2500 AU, also the cost of gems and faceting machines has also gone up. I well cut 2-3 carat sapphire will set you back well over $600 plus. Any larger than 6mm round $1000 plus.
