It's interesting that you think Waylan is a coward and a goof, when nothing could be further from the truth from where I'm standing. Waylan is a villain protagonist. All that bragging he does about being a dastardly outlaw? He's telling the truth. There's lots of hints to this. Hear me out: His 'outlaw name' he makes up for himself is Two-bit Jerry. What a strange name. Being two-bit is an archaic slang to describe something that is inferior, cheap, worthless, or insignificant. Why would he deliberately insult himself? Because his goofy incompetent persona is just that. A fake out. A mask. He's a predator but he acts like prey. When Waylan fights the Shadow Monsters with Jo, he's helpless. He can't hit a single shot. Yet when he trains Cordy, he effortlessly drills the can set up for shooting practice on the first try. Was Cordy a natural gunslinger who learned from an incompetent person... or did Waylan actually give her good lessons because he's secretly a skilled marksman? What's more... did Cordy decide to rob a bank on her own... or did he subtly guide her towards that decision? By having it be all *her* idea, he has plausible deniability if the heist goes poorly. Jo's reaction to seeing Waylan says it all. She doesn't believe for even a moment that he's actually an outlaw and that this is for real. She thinks he's an idiot who is in over his head. Just as he planned? Waylan flat out *says* what his strategy for manipulating others is: Giving them validation. He does this to Jo, by letting her feel superior to him. He does this to Cordy, by feeding her desire to be more confident. He does this to Death ITSELF. They are all played by Waylan. All of them do exactly what he wants them to. At the end of the show, Jo mentions that the former sheriff was killed. How does Waylan respond to this information? With an evil smirk. Now, Waylan was playing with pinecones at the beginning of the episode. Who did the pinecones represent again? That's right. The sheriff... and Two-bit Jerry. It's not such a huge leap to assume Waylan killed the sheriff. He's a wolf disguised as a sheep.

@trustmeits610pm2

@@ninjadejedi If Cliffside were to become a series, I think the main plot would deal with Waylan's secret nature and what exactly his ultimate goal is. He killed the sheriff, but why? He's also laying low and biding his time as the least important member of Jo's lawmen... but what is he waiting for? I don't think his resentment for being undervalued is entirely faked. It might even be at the root of his villainy and the fake goofy persona he has created. He obviously came to appreciate the advantages of being underestimated, even if he secretly wished others knew his worth. I can see him helping (seemingly by accident) deal with many lesser villains and problems in Cliffside, but eventually Waylan becomes the main antagonist in the series climax. Jo's arc would probably have a lot to do with the responsibilities she has as the primary protector of Cliffside. In the pilot, she gives Cordy a chance to surrender peacefully. When Cordy refuses, Jo has no problem killing her. This might seem callous for a 'hero' but honestly that's very in keeping with the whole Wild West motif. They were not soft on crime in that setting. I think much of Jo's role would be all the headaches that come with slimy old-timey lawyers, various criminals, supernatural threats, and dealing with all the annoying complaints/non-problems that the locals plague her with. She's also the character least likely to believe in Waylan's eventual heelturn, so much of the reaction and shock from that has to come from her. She's definitely a straight man. Just one with an unusually good poker face most of the time. Cordy shows a huge boost in confidence in the pilot, but there's no reason she couldn't relapse into self-doubt. Especially if her rose-colored image of Waylan is ever shattered. Which it most certainly will be. Probably many times and for different reasons. She has such a powerful optimism though I think she'll always bounce back and find a new reason to believe in him (and herself). Cordy's arc begins as her being Waylan's unlikely student/sidekick. She develops a strong determination to live up to the crazy over the top boasting of Waylan. I can imagine many subplots of her committing various escalating crimes with a 'reluctant' Waylan close behind. These attempts either fail spectacularly or the pair find themselves in competition with other outlaws. Either way, comedic/action shenanigans. It's definitely going to have to be Cordy that eventually defeats/stops Waylan.

_Totally_ agree! Lemme add to your argument by quoting a couple of evidence points from my four-year-old comment on the original video: "...remember the clip at 1:42, where Waylon is playing with pinecone action figures? There was something off about this scene. The "Two-Bit Jerry" pinecone had Waylon's hat on, but get this: the pinecone playing the partner didn't have Jo's hat- suggesting that this is actually a different, former partner, and makes the story of the train possible- but that's not all! The next scene shows a derailed train, which means two things: one, that our possible undercover outlaw could be reenacting how the train crashed, and two, that *the train was within walking distance of the town that lost its sheriff.*" "At 10:30, if you read the newspaper, it mentions Waylon as 'Some random kid we've never heard of (which is weird because this town has, like, 20 people; must be a real nobody)...' Like they said, weird... almost as if it would take *effort* to lay low in a place like that. Or it could imply that he came into town recently. Maybe *on a train.*"

The "stretchy" animation I believe is called Tweening, where the character exists in layered pieces that are individually altered and stretched as needed. An example is whenever the camera does a dramatic zoom-in on Waylon, his hair starts blowing in the wind. Each tuft exists on it's own layer, and has it's own shape, lines, and shading. The base shape isn't redrawn for the next frame, instead it's bent and tilted to create the motion! It's like Puppeting, but more fluid, and as all animation goes, it's still on a frame by frame basis, so it still can take a long time!
@soontobechannel743

Yeah there’s a lot of tweening which makes it so bouncy and smooth that I really enjoyed! This show has a lot of potential and it’s sad it isn’t being worked on anymore, but tbh this was an indie project that was done by a guy and his friends so I wouldn’t expect as much from it considering they have a very small budget

Normally this style is used when people don't have either the animation skills or time to make a proper hand drawn animation, like in the case of Battlefield Friends/Doraleous and Associates or Happy Tree Friends or South Park. Manipulating things in flash like a puppet is way easier than having to draw individual frames like a cartoon artist. But his tweening animation is definitely a step above the rest. Since Flash no longer exists as something mainstream, I can see that people are no longer leaning into this kind of anination, and it's probably for the better.

To be completely truthful, I'm uncertain about what to express regarding the pilot. Although I enjoyed certain aspects of its characters, theme, and soundtrack, I am not particularly fond of its humor as it did not resonate with me. However, what stood out the most to me was the primary villain, "Death". In my opinion, Death was not given enough recognition as a character in Cliffside. He has a very distinct and obvious appearance that is representative of his own name. It's quite scary to witness his ability to pull an endless amount of arms at will, coupled with the absence of any emotional expression on his face which only consists of a mouth. He gives off a sense that he's capable of far more than what he's currently displaying. Moreover, his silence adds to his ominous persona, as we are left without any insight into his character. It's impossible to know his thoughts or abilities, which aligns with the idea of "death" perfectly. We can never predict or anticipate what our fate will be like after all. I also like his worm shaped design due to how good it looks. He simply is a great character despite having very few scenes in the pilot. If Cliffside ever gets a full series, I would adore it if Death served as it's major nemesis for the entire series, not only in the pilot. I believe he could significantly enhance both the plot and the characters. But I doubt that we will even get a second episode anytime soon. Great video by the way! Keep it up!

Considering characters like Cordie, the Murder Drones, and Uzi and Doll, I feel like Liam Vickers likes the idea of human eating creatures (well the Murder Drones, Uzi and Doll don't eat humans, but they're clearly referencing Vampires, which do). I had a Vampire phase while I was around 14 to 16 years old, and Liam Vickers' shows reawaken these feelings in me that I didn't know were even still there after all this time. But I grew up so that means I won't go back to that cringey phase. It still brings back a few good memories from that time though.

It isn't as if the opportunity has been entirely lost. Liam *has* been given the opportunity to be a director on a show with a real budget and talented staff backing him. So far, Murder Drones was been super fun, and it's showing a lot of potential. It's on the right track and should be great if the first season concludes well. Many of the same themes present in Cliffside are now being explored in Murder Drones. We have a similar tone of dark humor, murderous monster girls, awkward romance with said monster girls, and there are a lot of himbo parallels between N and Waylons characterization. In a manner of speaking, Liam has been trying to tell the same general story for the last several years, and is now finally in position to execute on that idea. Looking forward to how the rest of Murder Drones plays out.

Honestly I think Cordie is the best out of Liam's little "psychotic woman who wants to eat people" trope. At the moment, V is a pretty flat character. She's either treating her genocide job as a playground game or is being moody about stuff that only she knows. I'm sure she'll get fleshed out as Murder Drones progresses but right now it's just not enough. And Di from another LV "animation" doesn't even have a minute of screentime, so there wasn't really a chance to give her a proper personality. IC-0n is a close contender, but I find Cordie to be more entertaining. It's pretty funny how they're kinda the opposite of each other. IC-0n has a God complex and views the MC as nothing more but a plaything, while Cordie isn't very confident in herself and views the MC as the perfect being.

I admire Liam but speaking as someone that found his creepy pasta channel before he started the animation one, his biggest problem is he doesnt finish his stories and beyond any other problem I believe that´s what killed Cliffside. You can justify some, mostly the animation related stories like cliff side with the time sink and budget issues or Internicion cube being shelved so he could go make Murder Drones. If it was just that I wouldn´t have noticed. But Design, Yellow Hallogen, Puppet Game... So many great stories that just never ended, I started sensing a pattern. I completely understand why this happens as someone that enjoys writing, one thing is getting inspired for a story and plotting it, a very different is going through with it from beggining to end. But its still a shame when you look at his short stories and the few he actually completed like Black Dogs (my personal favourite) and see how awesome they are. Thats why I´m glad he is now working profesionally on this stuff, a little bit of supervision and responsibility is the push he needed to fix that issue.

The animation style is definitely a flash-style tweening via rigging pieces like My Little Pony. It can be a tricky animation method to pull off because the art of it is making said style not obvious. The show had so much potential in making sure Cordy didn't find out he made everything up. I could see tension rising from this alone in the longer it takes for her to find out the truth, the more upset she would get, but eve telling her the truth asap like in the pilot was too urgent of a situation and her reaction would have still been a threat. It creates a cycle of having to keep the lie going along side Joe never having told a lie and probably won't start now. That's the direction I pictured the series to go at least and I would've loved to see that happen. I'm glad Cordy's essence was reborn in N and V at least, but I would still love to see this series picked up again some day.

Cliffside would have been on par with Hazbin Hotel and Hellva Boss. I also loved Liam's stories. They had interesting world building. Puppet Game was a pretty awesome story. I want more of that too.

btw he also made a short pilot about a mad scientist boy who steals a murderous AI girl from a government facility (think SCP Foundation) and the pilot shows him running from black vans/helicopters and the AI girl has alot of "Murder Drone" qualities. you can see how alot of the idea from THAT pilot got carried over into the Murder Drones series just with the rolls swapped around so that the anti-social AI girl is now the MC and the goofy/nervous scientist boy is now HIMSELF a Murder Drone in the form of the MC's sidekick. i think the boy is even voiced by the same person as the MC of Cliffside (which might just be the creator of these shows because the main guy in each is consistently given this voice). ive been following this creator sense BEFORE he was doing animations all the way back when he was just writing creepy pasta style fiction and then reading it on a now abandoned youtube channel. (still upset i never got to hear the end of his last story! it wasnt terribly well written but cliff hanger endings SUCK!!)

I think the animation style is called vector animation. Wakfu does it a lot but it doesn't look as stretchy, as the characters consist of multiple pieces that make up their body and each piece has to be redrawn for many shots or if it would change too much to be noticeable. I like that kind of animation, but it's hard to pull off right I think.

5:43 There can be good writing in characters not developing, Luffy for example stayed the same or very similar at least through the entire series, but One Piece is one of them most well sold fictions out there. I could even use something like the old Looney Tunes as a example of what I mean too, because Good Writing means, just, a story being entertaining and enjoyable. There's a lot of simple stories that are good, as well as overly complicated stories that are bad, and I feel like they don't get the credit they deserve most of the time.

Damn it's been years since I watched Cliffside I never realized how awkward the animation looked, guess teenage me was too enamored by Cordie to harshly judge the animation, but tbf Liam was still somewhat a newbie to making fully animated segments and scenes rather than a simple loop, and damn he's improved a lot since then I feel. Cliffside had so much potential but tbh in retrospect didn't have that much going for it at the moment besides the classic Liam Vickers charm and the paranormal western aesthetic. I'm extremely glad Liam's got the chance to make stuff like Murder Drones though, which I really like but feel like it's sometimes too teen or tropey (tbh the show is fine I just don't like the type of fandom it attracts), but I guess Liam's stories were always that way. I wonder if Liam'll ever decide to readapt one of his older stories with Glitch, or if he'll just leave them behind permanently, a cg animated Design reboot would go crazy, maybe a Black Dogs miniseries even. I don't think any of that (or cliffside even) will ever happen, even though Liam is assumedly a much more mature person now with a full on show at Glitch, he has a history of abandoning projects or leaving them unfinished. Side-note: Ignore this or take this as constructive criticism, but I think the segment recapping Cliffside was a bit long considering the lenght of the video. Just a nitpick.

I’m hoping another studio takes it up (he’s been busy with Murder Drones, but us rates he’s been pitching it to studios for production since he said it would be a very large undertaking on his own). Maybe with the partnership with Glitch after they do the Amazing Digital Circus?

I still think cliffside has a lot of potential to do very well as a mainline cartoon. It appeals to a audience that needs to be catered to which is the viewers that are no longer watching animation geared towards solely young audiences but are not mature enough to tackle truly adult themes Shows like this have a record of doing very well when they get ability to do so. Even though it missed its window a bit, I still say that the audiences it would appeal to need the extra content. Maybe down the line someone will contact Liam from a larger animation group and offer to buy the idea and his consultation on the project so it can get in the hands of a full animation teen and we can see a mainline series come out of it

They are using puppet animation with some shape tweening. It basically cuts a character into sections so they aren’t having to draw every frame. And those sections are then moved to the primary points of action on your timeline and then computer mapping basically maps where the transition is. Think of it like Google maps, you have point A and B which are your key frames with the line in the middle being your action line or tween. The stops you make are basically the in between frames that are points the computer sets but you can adjust to make the motion look a certain way.

Liam Vickers is a legend. I remember when I first watched Cliffside. I instantly wanted more. It was the type of show that normal media won't green light, despite the fact that it is better than anything they will ever produce. After I found Liam Vickers and GLITCH, I went down a research journey and rabbit hole of Indie Animation/Web series. It has become my favorite thing and I love these shows, pilots, movies, and shorts more than the shows that we get from anywhere else. These are the shows I was longing for throughout all the time I've spent watching television. The feeling of wonder and awe they give is like no other.
