Let's not pretend these songs were being sung in Asia or Africa. I hope that isn't what you were alluding to with the last line, it just seemed a little needless, as the rest of the comment is spot-on. These songs can be enjoyed by any race or ethnic group, sure, but spiritually speaking, these are the songs of those of white, European ancestry.
@silvioliu3623 жыл бұрын

And I already said it doesn't preclude anyone of any race from from enjoying them, but let's just stick to telling the truth about the origin and genesis of these songs, shall we? I can't stop watching this every day for over a week now but not the whole thing because it is so heavy. The eye movement side to side 0:15 is chilling. I was born and raised far from Appalachia, in Hawaii a completely different culture and it is a profoundly important to my identity. But I've got roots that go back to the 1700s in one Appalachian valley and some of my people are still there. The old mountain music, the older the better, the ones that go back to the 1700s Scotch-Irish, speak to something profoundly old and deep within my soul - and I didn't even grown up around it.

Banjo picking in gloves? I don't even know if i should be very impressed by that or not. I love, love folk style music. I can't say how tragic it is that so much of it has been lost. Them again, never before has so much of it been so easily available to listen to for those who want to find it. Still, not the same as when it was transferred orally through the generations. At least this is done in the proper style. No fancy studio mixing, no fancy arrangements, no bluegrass. Just a plain vocal and accompanying instrument. And the banjo is a fantastic instrument. It is wonderful in its traditional style, but it is also amazingly versatile. You would be surprised at what you can do with a banjo. It doesn't only belong to old timey rural folk music, it can be very sophisticated and haunting.

Really digging the Leatherstocking output. Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that rock. There's something about the combination of that minimal / primitive style and tone of singing that cuts deep into my psyche. More please.

Damn, Clif, I'd love to hear more of these old ballads from you, like 'Lady Margaret and Sweet William'! You can tell a story, and you can pick; you're born for it.

This is beautiful story. The repetition of being covered in cold red clay shows how definite death is for all of us

I had this thrown my way by the algorithm and I'm truly glad it did. This is wonderful. You've got to do more of leather stocking this stuff, it'll help bring this sort of music to the masses.

I have a collection of folk music from the early 1900s through the 30s, recorded on tinny old-timey equipment so that voices come through like banjo strings. There's a distinct feeling of nostalgia and reflection that carries through that music, and speaks to bygone Americana. I haven't heard anything in a long time that reaches that level - listening to this song was almost eerie because it reminded me of that folk music!
