If this happened, to say, Mount Rushmore can that person just go "oops I didn't know, lets chaulk this up as a learning experience" No. There's thousand year old history and art on those walls, what in God's name would posses you to put bolts and anchors in it? And if it's a tourist attraction that TONS of people visit every year don't you think those bolts and anchors would have already been placed here by someone already. If someone doesn't have basic common sense to realize defacing thousand year old history then they shouldn't be climbing in the first place.

@@ratedRblazin420 Mount Rushmore is a known landmark. It wasn't maliciously done. There are ppl still able to rock climb in that area. The issue is where you put the anchors. Where that guy put the anchor was not on the art but close to it. If it was a real issue, then there should have been postings about it. I , mean the person who did it, admitted and said they would pay for any damages without even being charged. When does education come in then if we say ignorance is not an excuse. I am sorry but not everyone knows everything about everything out there. Anyways, the point I think they were honestly saying is not to get angry and viciously attack the person that did it. And maybe learn from all this and have them put up signs to where anchors are to go. So we learn to communicate instead of getting angry.

How did the natives get up there??

Now finally that’s a good reason to remove bolts from a route. Tired of hearing these blobs of raging ego being like « I’m chopping off those bolts because my cams will hold » This is a matter of preserving unique ancient history and probably the only time I will agree with destroying someone else’s hard bolting work - because it was preventing the destruction of unique and precious hard work.

With everything else that's happening in the good ol US of A I'll rate this a 1/10 on the give a fuck meter.

History always matters. America boasts about it constantly to back any argument they have. How proud they are to be American and how great their history is. Might as well let people climb all over Mount Rushmore National Memorial and let them carve their names and dates into the cliffs. I'm sure over time it will do just fine.

Heartbreaking. But I'm glad the perpetrator came forward and admitted what he had done. This should be educational for all of us climbers.

Ironic that they are concerned about a 1000 year old Petroglyph yet say nothing when rock is blasted out of the way to make room ''civilization''.

Does this mean some stick figure I make make in a random rock will be guarded in a thousand years?

Climbing routes are planned out. You have to be a real DF to not know that the route was was on a petroglyph.

A less historically damaging story, but there was a local route that was my white whale ... super hard, but super cool. I kept working at it and got closer to getting past the crux each time. I showed up one day and someone had chiseled open the one finger-hold at the crux so they could fit their whole hand into it. It's super-easy now, and nobody climbs it because there's no point. The destructive entitlement of some people blows my mind. I really wish I could find that person.

I hope you find them too! That's so shitty! Not everything in life needs training wheels, mfw.

What would you do to them when you find them? Chisel their hand into a one- finger width?

The end was comforting. The climber came forward to see how he can help fix his mistake. To me that's an honest mistake. A stupid mistake but an honest one

If ancient indian 'artists' had been shamed just as we are today, these rock carvings and paintings would never have been created.

Perhaps filling the holes with epoxy would prevent water getting in and freezing.
