Dear Olga , I'm a newbie gardener with a small garden and two varieties of climbing roses which are from the wild hilly areas. I'm so glad I came across your channel and your videos. You have shared all there is to share about your fabulous climbing roses. Alas my surroundings are starkly different from yours. I love in India Rajasthan which is a very semi arid region. But my cream white coloured white climber rose has started thriving. There is a pink variety too which has not bloomed as yet. So it was a great encouragement to see you and your garden . Will be sincerely watching all your videos. 👌👌👌😍😍😍. Praise The Lord. Blessings to you always.

Your videos have helped me so much understand the 2 dimensions of the Lady of Shalott rose. At first I thought it was a climber and then your videos showed how it can also be a shrub. I believe when I ordered from David Austin I ordered climber…after watching your videos and seeing your beauty I would like it to be a shrub….. will that be a problem given I ordered it as a climber? You mentioned David Austin will trim them differently. Thank you so much! I love your videos! So helpful for a new rose gardener 🌱
@OlgaCarmody2 жыл бұрын
Hi again, Kris. You are not in any trouble with your rose being ordered as climber. Your rose will not develop all those original stems after the first year, and you can take things into your own hands. Remember, those stems, before arriving to you, were handled by lifting equipment, which in the process of taking rose out of the ground, got rid of all thorns on the rose. Rose will produce strong growth from the base and from the original stems, and the rest will die. Good, we don’t need those damaged sticks. Hope I am not too confusing with all this…

@OlgaCarmody2 жыл бұрын
Why did you think that it is a lack of fertilizer that makes your roses sick? Look into quality of soil, sun and water situation. Shade will definitely make your roses sick. Roses in the south suffer from root knot nematodes… How about other pests… And then you can buy an organic rose food, I use Espoma, and give it to your roses.

I was reading about one guy rosarían from us rose society who couldn’t have his own land for some time. Finally, when he bought his house, he went ahead and bought every single rose for sale… What do you think about that? I don’t have St. Swithun. I like it’s flowers, look like little saucers. I am not particularly happy with its grayish green foliage. My Queen of Sweden has those shiny, leathery leaves, grayish I must say. But that is just my 2 cents. Keep me posted how you like it.

Love your videos! Just subs to you. I have a Lady of Shallot which I bought in March this year and been giving out really long shoots, so I bend one and it gave out more long shoots. It didn't blooms yet but only grow those long shoots. But now I know what to do with those long shoots as I want to train it as a climber. I probably should just wait until it gets high enough so I can bend it more to my likings. Very good informative videos 👍 By the way, do you have anything on a floribunda rose called Minerva and Rosarium Uetersen? I'm lost at what I'm going to do with them...the Rosarium gives out horizontal shoots that bends down gracefully but didn't produce flowers. Then it gives out vertical shoots with cluster buds on top. I don't know how to trim them or what the exact shape should I expect 😅 The Minerva looks like a shrub but it gave out a long shoots with cluster flowers on top, so now I'm scared to trim it as I didn't want to accidentally prun any shoots that might bearing flowers. Any advice for me? 🥰
@OlgaCarmody3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hazel, I don’t have Minerva or Rosarium. Just checked the info on Rosarium and see that it is a mighty climber or cascading rose. It can reach 12 feet high! Don’t cut those long shoots, train them on something vertical. And don’t worry about the blooms, they will come. Your rose is young probably… If you train a climbing rose long shoots to grow horizontally, they will produce many vertical shoots and those will bloom next year. As for Minerva. It is stated as a shrub. Roses do grow out crazy shoots sometimes. I would trim it to form a pleasant shape and wouldn’t worry about it. Your Lady of Shallot is young too. I am going to show in my next video it’s second blooms and you will be surprised how wild it can get. So your roses and you are doing just fine! Happy gardening!

@@OlgaCarmody Thanks so much for your feedback and advice! My Lady of Shalott is young indeed barely a year, now it's happily growing as a climber now that I got a rose trellis for it. It gave me 2 blooms in last 3 months but I have high hopes for any blooms next year. I had a crazy rainy season last couple of months and sadly Rosarium died from canker and the Minerva is surviving from black spot. I'm really impress that Lady of Shalott didn't get infected much with black spot as all my roses are. Just a couple of leaves got infected and that's all. Your Lady of Shalott and climbing roses videos will always be my references in growing my little rose garden ❤️

My Lady of Shalott was turning into a monster as a shrub, so I decided to put it in an obelisk. I’m new to using obelisks, so I wanted to know if I should bend the big canes around the structure. I don’t see lateral shoots from them, so I’m afraid it will not work.

@OlgaCarmody3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Congratulations on your new rose purchase! Climbing speed depends on rose variety. Usually taller types are faster/stronger climbers. Majority of DA roses are reblooming varieties, but you might get only one small blooming season from your new babies. Be patient, your roses will be young and will be spending energy on root system first. So, no big show first year, next year - better, and year after that - your climbers will be mighty! Happy gardening!
