I would imagine that protection on the first ascend was not frequent and not very "safe". (based on what I saw in this video) Unless there was more ice and bucket full of ice screws. More likely just some pitons were used. Amazing climbing in any case.

Crazy to think that Weissner very likely would've summited if him and his team weren't completely inept.
@g.fisher66024 жыл бұрын
@@Raphael_246 Actually Wiessner was opposite of inept. Had the skill to make it to within 750 of the summit, without bottled oxygen. Took a rock variation which avoided the Bottleneck section. He had plenty of light left to go for the summit. But his Sherpa balked. Or dropped a crampon. There are several story versions. If they had made it Himalayan history would have been different. There would never have been any use of bottled oxygen.

@@Tennischamp450 yes you have that correct. Since the rope is fixed above him, he can slide the ascender up the rope and it would stop him if he slipped. It’d be a scary experience to fall there even on a fixed rope and that altitude must be killer on the body (I’ve never been that high)

Can someone explain something to me, is that rope always there for mountain climbers? Is it almost impossible without that assistance? I'm just confused because when I see videos like this they're already strapped to a rope at the top and someone had to get there first.
@roeske4 жыл бұрын
Sure! "Real" climbing is called lead climbing. That's when you go up and place pieces of protection in as you go, every so many feet or meters. It could be pitons or ice screws or metal cams that fit into cracks. The rope trails behind you. If you fall and you're above your last piece, you fall twice as far -- say you're 10 feet above the last piece, you'd fall 20 feet. Actually more, because of slack in the system and stretch. And you hope you placed the gear well and it holds! On these big mountains where a lot of people climb, sherpas and guides go up first and put down a fixed line, and everyone one goes up behind. There's not much risk to it. That's why great alpinists prefer to go on new routes or ones without a lot of people, so they can have the pure challenge and risk and exposure and accomplishment of doing everything... Hope that helps!
