We’ve done a lot of coverage of Alex Honnold over the past few years and it’s easy to forget that there are plenty of other free soloists operating out there. One who you probably won’t have heard of is South African Matt Bush, who’s been quietly soloing some of the hardest routes in his native Country for many years.
He’s currently working on a new film project, documenting his attempts to free solo hard lines on Table Mountain and we caught up with him and his film crew Ruko Media to find out what the free solo experience is like for both athlete and filmmaker.

John Muir said, "Natural Faith casts out fear." Fear is a negative factor. 100% positive mind set is best especially for "free soloing".

I'm very worried for Matt. The ideas of competition, challenge and accomplishment do not belong in the world of free soloing. The moment ego gets involved, there is a huge danger. The thing is, when you watch videos of Alex Honnold, he is very humble, he is not trying to push the limits, free soloing is just a form of self-expression and a great joy to him. This is the way it should be.

Honnold pushes his limits roped. He has publicly said that he free solos stuff that is hard, but well below his maximum grade - he isn't suicidal. If he wants to push himself technically and try really hard stuff, he puts on a harness.

Matt makes it look easy. When we all know it's far from it. The film sounds awesome. I have a fear of heights, but I used to climb up & down steep canyon walls, anyway. The last attempt I made was at a climbing wall in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Having a safety line reduced most of my fear. My first & last time rappeling into a cavern, my equipment failed. It was awful. The operators said this had never happened before. Right.
