Clingmans Dome - Highpoint of the Great Smoky Mountains

Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the third highest point in the east of the Mississippi, and provides one of the most scenic viewpoints in the United States. This video takes you on a journey through one of the most interesting mountain ecosystems in the country.

I remember my first visit to the Dome in 1978. I have been back dozens of times since and will continue to go back as long as I can. My dream is to go there after a heavy snow as the first person to walk through the freshly fallen snow all the way up the Clingman's Dome Road and to the top. What an experience that would be!

donna martin The road is closed to motorized traffic during the winter but you are still allowed to walk or ski it if you want (per a park ranger). My guess is not too many are going to walk seven miles each way on a fresh snowfall. I would!

it can snow in late may i left Gatlinburg with just chilly weather and went for a drive and it was snowing as we went up the mountain and at the top it had 3-4 inches of wet snow on the observation deck and very foggy a ranger stood at the trail at the base of the walkway and it was still worth the trip up the road on the way out was covered and slushy and the ranger at the gift shop said there were no plans to close the dome until normal hours

BEAUTIFUL!!! My late father-in-law lived near the Park. Used to vacation there every year. Climbed the Dome several times, and hiked many trails in the Smokies.

One of our highlights on our trip to Pigeon Forge. If you arrive mid-Sept, the crowds are significantly lower. We had the opportunity to have a guided hike led by a park ranger- very informative. Views we outstanding! We arrived @ 9 Am, just in time to see the clouds covering the valleys, makes you feel like bursting out in song!

Yes I've been there to & everywhere with my Parents & we been everywhere to Tennessee to Gatlinburgs to Boone N.C. & Dollywood so...Yes indeed I Love the mountains it's so peaceful there you can breath so easy there and the pathway nature trails you can walk thru and I my only dream is to carry my Wife there hopefully in the near future if God allows it.....God bless nature the mountains rock :-)!!!!

Just got back this morning from The Smokies. Visited herr and it was amazing being in the clouds. Didn't have the best view bc it was so cloudy though. It was neat how the temp dropped like 15 degrees between climbing up in the car to reaching the top.

If you can possibly do it go around the middle of October for the most beautiful display of colors you will ever see as you head up to the dome. It will be crowded so an early start is important. Better yet, walk the AT up and Clingman's Dome road down to Newfound Gap. Fourteen miles round trip (My son and I have done it!).

There is about a 20 degree difference between the valley and the mountain tower up on clingmans dome.

I don't know who narrated this but he is wrong about it never gotten above 80 degrees on Clingmans Dome. It was 94 degrees in July of 1988. I know because my wife and I were married on July 9,1988 and we spent our honeymoon there at Gatlinburg. It was one of the hottest summers on record and I remember hoping that we would go to Clingmans Dome to cool off. We got to the parking lot and got out and walked to the peak. By the time we made the hike to the top we were soaked with sweat. We even ask a ranger at the top and he told us it was 94 on top of the mountain. We were so amazed that it was that hot. As a normal thing we took our heavier coats with us prepared for the cool air. Boy were we fooled!

We just got back from Gatlinburg about two hours ago and I'm ashamed to say I drove my family all the way down there from east central Illinois and I got terrified of climbing the mountain in our rented SUV...But what we are capable of seeing was SOOOOO breathtaking I don't know if I will we be able to replace it...Just the drive Down there alone was worth the trip...we were on a very limited budget and had many plans and even spent an extra day but didn't get to do all that we wanted to do but the Drive was Breathtaking

GSMNP is the prettiest place you can imagine during the fall leaf show. If you can, that is the time to come. Middle to end of October. You will be wowed by the beauty of the colors beyond photos. What city in Illinois? I was born in Carbondale, also lived in Chicago, La Grange, Schiller Park, Rantoul, and many other places. We used to come to Tennessee on vacation. We don't any longer! We live here now about 75 miles from the park. My son and I go hiking there a lot including parts of the Appalachian Trail inside the park.

this is a well researched and presented video. We've got approx. 65,000 acres of spruce-fir forest left in the S. Appalachians-- 74% in the Smokies, 11% in the Black Mountains, 10% in the Balsam Mountains, 3% on Roan Mtn, 2% on Grandfather Mtn.

I disagree, Smokey mountain may have the largest spruce fir forest is the southern Appalachians but in the northern extent of the Appalachians my state Maine has much larger spruce and fir forests....Not even close

+captainscott2 the straight 'path' up the slope of Mt. Mitchell is a power/phone line installed years ago for the benefit of the state park personnel stationed there year-round.

Its original name is Mulberry Mountain. Its sacred to the Native Americans, they would have stories about the Bears. They return there to hibernate. If you listen on that hike, there are hundreds of hummingbirds fighting over the wild flowers( they are kind of a bright orange red flower). You can't hear them for the talking and the winded hikers. Lol…its a climb…don't need a gym membership there. Take your time and look around people miss so much on that hike. Plus keep an eye out for bears. What is wrong with the pine trees they look like they are dying?
