Great tips for editing iTunes files! You can also now add audio files (mp3 or better) into a score reader program (like Newzik) by assigning the audio file to a “score” (i.e a blank sheet of music where you’ve written the name of the song & any other info you need. Assign the “score” to a setlist & you’re ready to go. This is super helpful if you’re also needing to read transcribed or arranged music, while playing with a backing track).

I put this in a comment to a comment but I meant it to go here: If you make a playlist in iTunes or Apple Music with a single song in it, and turn off “Play Similar” (the infinity sign) then you can use the looping tool on the right end of the play bar to make the track infinitely loop. Much easier than piecing snips together in an external program. :)

EXCELLENT INFO!! Never knew this ... However ... Editing tracks is so easy to do these days with free software, and editing audio in general is a good skill for folks to have.

Totally agree. I do my recording in a multitrack app for the iPad which provides many editing features.

Great ides for naming tracks. When you started talking about editing data, my brain shut down. It would take me hours and hours to accomplish that. And adding another program to the mix to do this, just seems too complicated for those of us who are technically challenged.

Very useful, Clint! I’m going to try to do it on my iPhone, as someone else mentioned. Hopefully it’ll work!

Hi Clint - I'm not one into backing tracks et al. I like the pure, raw sound of the unencumbered musical instrument, in this case: the Native American flute. 🙂

I use the Apple Music app on my iPhone. It does have looping capability. It will loop a whole playlist or one song. Im not sure about the iPod.

Hmm. I'm using iTunes. Hmmm. Well, it's complicated, and in any case, you probably get better results (given this may be a performance) by looping the audio yourself in Audacity or some such ... there is often a hiccup when you loop in a player app.

@@ClintGoss granted. I found that some pieces of music backing tracks, or otherwise have a bit of silence either at the end, or the beginning or both, and that causes the delay in the replay.

@@WeberBaker We often want to loop a 30 second section for workshop participants ... like a 12-bar blues background ... and the "GLITCH" at the loop point is a real pain ....

Thanks Clint. The issue I have with iTunes is that when one song ends, the next one starts right away and I never figured out how to turn that off. I want backing tracks to stop when they're done and then let me start the next song when I'm ready. It also doesn't fade songs out if you want to stop a really long one when you're done improvising. So I have moved to using apps for set lists. I had a great one that was unfortunately discontinued and now I'm using "Stop&GoPlus" to set up my playlists for performances. It's not as good as the one I used to have because it doesn't let me set the volume of each song individually or shorten a track right in the app like the other one did. So if someone has a better app they use, I'd love to hear about it.

Hi Clint, do you (or anyone) know if the Amazon Music app can be used in similar ways? For better or worse, all of my mp3’s are on that app. I haven’t been able to find a loop feature, however. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks, and again, excellent video, Clint!
