I don't blame them for it. For an algorithm it's hard to teach the difference between a common domestic turkey and an endangered exotic fowl. Or say, a typical budgerigar or a parrot sourced by poachers. Making this even more difficult is the lack of local legislation even when global legislation against the pet trade is pretty strict. Some animals are not supposed to be kept as pets, and that's a line KZbin doesn't want to contribute to promoting. A pretty sensible stance in my opinion

it would probably depend whether or not they had fur or feathers or a mixture of both. Franklin wasn't a fan of the turkey. He actually more disliked the bald eagle. In the letter where he said the turkey would make more sense than the bald eagle, it was a sarcastic attack on the choice of the latter. If anything, it showed how LITTLE he respected turkeys. He was saying bald eagles are even worse. The ultimate point that usually gets missed, though, is that both were native to North America. So was the rattlesnake on the Gadsden Flag, and the Mohawk warriors whose garb was worn by a few people during the Boston Tea Party. The founding fathers were specifically choosing things that were not from Europe, to say "we're born here, we're not Europeans".

Another po'd bird got mad at a guy who lives in the area and chased him all over the yard and the guy ran in to the building with the bird on his heels. My grandfather worked on a domesticated turkey farm for a while. They kept losing birds and when he investigated he found many feathers next to a hole in the fence. He set up watch outside the fence and found a stray dog that would stand outside the hole and make noises until one of the turkeys stuck it had our through the fence. Unfortunately for the turkey, the dog then grabbed it's neck and pulled until it had yanked the bird outside the fence and strode off with its victim. My grandfather sealed the hole and blocked the area around the fence. He always shook his head and said that domestic turkeys weren't too bright. But I think it's that they were extra curious. Got to know what that noise was outside the fence. 🦃
@CCNorse11 күн бұрын
I use two fences 6 inches apart, because the racoons would bait the turklets up to the fence (1 inch wire hexagon) and grab their heads through the mesh. They couldn't get the whole turklet out, but apparently the reward of just the head and neck of a turklet was enough. So now there's two layers of fence to make such things harder.

Turkeys have been reintroduced in Massachusetts. We had a group of about fourteen that hung around our neighborhood. I convinced a dude at work that yes, birds came from dinosaurs by pointing out the similarities between velociraptor and wild turkey. Turns out he'd been attacked by a wild turkey before so the raptor claws suddenly made a LOT more sense to him. I do recognize that the two aren't directly related, but I'll take a win where I get one
@andrewmalinowski667311 күн бұрын
Anyone who calls a turkey "unintimidating" or "not very scary" has likely never encountered a turkey, but also never seen a Tom shaking a glove or intimidating a dog his own size (I'm talking height not weight). I not only raised a turkey but also thought he was nice until he turned and became a "threat." Studying turkeys and people who think turkeys can't fly will be surprised, because wild turkeys are used to roosting in trees to avoid predators but it's the domestically-raised turkeys that tend not to because they're used to being fed. As long as they're young enough they can fly to head-height and perch on something taller than them, the turkey I'd raised would fly up and perch on the left fender of a tractor (though it took a few "leaps" to get that high) and looked almost like a fat parrot

Also, one of the prey of Velociraptor happens to be Protoceratops (as made famous by the “Fighting Dinosaurs” fossil), which are bigger than them and can injure them by biting (as seen in that fossil, plus it’s common for prey animals to do that to their predators). So if you’re not careful around Velociraptors, they might decide to eat you as well (Nigel Marven learned that the hard way when he got chased by some (accurately sized, but scaly) Velociraptors in Chased by Dinosaurs).

So Turkey Lurkey got to stay. She was an absolute joy. She would go on walks in the woods with us, follow us arround in the yard and garden, and sit on our feet to demand head scritches. Much more social than our chickens and also willing to snuggle. She was largely free range, and one night, when she was about 8 years old she failed to come home at dark. Ultimately all life on this planet traces it's roots back to the first single celled organisms and it's fair to say that humans aren't bacteria because we don't look like it any more. I mean at some point you do have to draw lines and say "this is this and that is that" and those lines are always going to be kind of arbitrary. Basing on what things look like maybe isn't the most accurate heuristic on the planet but it's not TOTALLY off base.

@@chriswhinery925 I mean, like Clint said in another video, you can "draw the line" from a clade. For example, if you wanted to exclude those weird wormlike reptiles from lizards, you can do that. So we can remove mammals from bacteria by finding the multicellular ancestor.
@FallenCarnation10 күн бұрын
@@chriswhinery925 I don't think that's how it works. We don't look like the first chordates either, but it would be incorrect to say we aren't chordates. We don't even look like mammals anymore, honestly.
@VoxTenebrae9 күн бұрын
@@chriswhinery925 But we didn't evolve from Bacteria. We share a single-celled common ancestor with them sure (as far as we know this was the last universal common ancestor, or LUCA), but Bacteria and Archaea diverged from that common ancestor. Just like the common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees was neither a human nor a chimpanzee, LUCA was neither Bacteria nor Archaea, as those groups arose from separate lineages that diverged from LUCA

I love and respect turkeys. I've raised them for release and had a couple that have stayed to be watch-fowl! I've also seen them marching in a circle around a small copse. It was eerie!

Oh, poor Tom is too hot and/or stressed, that panting is giving me anxiety! We raised turkeys when I was a kid but only for a season. Very curious and fun birds!
@vezokpiraka11 күн бұрын
Eh probably a bit stressed. Turkeys like most birds on a farm are very good at leaving if not restrained when they are stressed. Turkeys even more than chickens and ducks. I wouldn't worry about him too much. Additionally, they do get more stressed than chickens and ducks so it's probably just the change of scenery or being transported in a crate. I doubt he is anywhere near dangerous levels of stress.

I had turkeys for years (still would if it weren't for coyotes and loose domestic dogs) and they also pant when they're excited or overstimulated. Nothing quite like taking a nap in a hammock and being woken up by heavy breathing and the hot breath of a turkey who had just been eating onion grass.
@KAZVorpal11 күн бұрын
Galliformes (their ancestors) like turkeys really were one of the main survivors of the K-T event that wiped out most of the dinosaurs. They survived specifically because they were ground-dwelling. Most of the dominant birds of the cretaceous were tree-dwelling enantiornithes, and 100% of that group died out. Only the more obscure, less "successful" birds that were ground or water-dwelling survived.

I miss my pet turkeys... One of them loved cuddles, the other thought you were poison and refused to get close. We had white turkeys! And one of my 'default' outfits for hanging outside in the backyard was my red shirt and blue robe. I suspect maybe they thought I was another turkey because my colors looked exactly like theirs 😂

I've had several turkey hens over the years, and each had her own distinct personality. The friendliest would come running to meet me at my car when I came home from work. She made an absolute racket with her welcome home routine, but it was pretty flattering all the same.

How big of a coop and run do they need? Do they do a good job of protecting a flock like roosters do? Are the as loud as or more loud than roosters? And most importantly, when are you making a “Pigeon, The Best Pet Dinosaur?” video?

@vurttv641511 күн бұрын
@Rumda. a flock of them is a bit different. Not louder than a rooster, but it's distracting enough.
@RadReptile61511 күн бұрын
They definitely need space they will not fit through your standard chicken run doors either. They also have a bad habit of not going inside their coops but rather roosting on top of them so you have to be a little creative with giving them no other option but to go inside.
@jhudora325611 күн бұрын
I agree with @vurttv6415. My grandmother frequently has wild flocks on her property and while they constantly make noise, they are less loud the farther away from you they get. Unlike say, the Tokay Gecko, which sounds loud no matter how far away from you they are.

I love turkeys! There's a big group of them that roam around my mom's neighborhood that are surprisingly friendly. Only when they've got turklets in tow do they get aggressive and more than once they've blocked traffic and scraped the ground with their wings in their territorial stance. After a couple months go by that tends to stop though. Sometimes I throw seeds or weeds out in the backyard for them. I'm not sure I'd like to keep them as pets but I do love seeing them forage through the neighborhood after the turklets hatch. The only thing they do that scares me is they like to go into the trees at night, so sometimes you'll look up and see a HUGE shadow in the tree and get scared for a moment until you realize it's just the turkeys.

The noise Tom was making while they were petting him is just a louder version of the sound my cockatiel would make before I found out that petting stroking scritching anywhere but the head turns on the sex drive. Basically every part of of a bird except the head and the feet is an erogenous zone. Maybe the density of the feathers aliviates the problem but all of the birds I have it is definitely an issue!

Yeah I used to have turkeys in the past, they even made turklets, but they really tend to suddenly die apparently for no reason, but Clint actually explained why it happens. Now I wonder if you can give them some medicines periodically to prevent those diseases from killing them.
@darcieclements488011 күн бұрын
No it's illegal to do the medications because of antibiotic resistance but you can get them vaccinated to take care of most of the problems. Unfortunately falling off your perch is a problem for all birds not specifically turkeys. If you keep your birds outside where wild birds can come in contact the likelihood goes up. Keeping multiple foul species together is complicated but weirdly they vaccinate each other if you can get it established well with blackhead being the one outlier which is why people bring it up.... Oh and toxic fumes from people cooking is another huge problem because it clogs their airways and they suffocate rapidly. No cook oil near Bird. No Teflon!
@StefyB511 күн бұрын
@darcieclements4880 thank you so much, very informative reply. 😊 At the moment I have hens and roosters and two female quails (they have their own enclosure) and they are all doing fine. I actually plan to get some geese and ducks, turkeys are very large and really delicate and even if I like them a lot I'd love to have something more resistant. 😊

I absolutely love your phylogeny and non pet videos but I do think your pet videos will have the most real world impact. “If you’re watching this to find out if X is the right pet for you, it isn’t” How many pets and owners have been saved from inadvertent neglect, danger and heartbreak? There’s certainly a longer list of critters I will never have now and also a longer list of pets I may well have room for one day 😁 #emeraldtreeskinkarmy
