Hey so I don't see any comments about this in the video but, I think it is important to say. Reptiles can live 20 + years and it's a huge commitment for a child. Please don't go and buy pets like these unless you are confident the child will want them for that long. With that said I got my snake when I was 11 and still have him at 24! It's just something to consider. Great video as always Clint!

Nick Jaton I most assuredly agree Dear. PLEASE DO NOT THINK I AM BEING A JERK😊 I am an older lady. Very old😊 I am an animal lover of over 6 decades and I got dolls and books about animals in equal amount for holidays😊 Large books!! 300 pages plus. Again, not being argumentative. I do believe kids are treated entirely TOO grown up in some ways and NOT grown up in other ways nowadays. Every generation thinks their childhood was the best, and I am no different. I think children should be encouraged to have responsibilities. There is, IMHO no greater responsibility than a living thing. My pets taught me a lifelong responsibility and appreciation for ALL life. Early pets changed my life forever in a good way. I got fabulous grades, was very pretty and popular. NOTHING made me feel as confident and valued ( other than my human family ) as my pets. I worked hard to get good grades so I could get into a great college to pursue my passion. Did my parents help? Rarely had to... I would encourage any parent to evaluate their child and their child's maturity level( mainly is the excitement going to last) and if so, please work with your child and select a pet. Also, pets are a fabulous bonding experience for the whole family! Shows, walks, family reading about the pet... In the long run, IMHO much more fun than a 1000$ phone and a FAMILY endeavor😊

I would say don't get your child any pet that you wouldn't be fine with taking care of if/when they lose interest or are unable to care for that pet. Yes they are a big commitment in terms of how long they live, but they can be easier to care for than many other animals (day-to-day commitments for caring for a corn snake, for example, is going to be much easier than day-to-day care for a dog, cat, and even a hamster). Of course, if you as the parent aren't able to handle and care for an animal, don't get it for your kid. Your kid's college may not allow certain/any animals in their dorm, or when they first find a job they may be in a situation where they have to move around or live somewhere where keeping an animal is not ideal, so you may have to take over the care for that animal. I still think it is an important way for kids to learn empathy and responsibility to have an animal that they care for. I think this video is just a good guide for reptiles to consider if you are wanting to get a pet that will be primarily your kid's responsibility -- it's still YOUR pet as the parent though, and I think Clint covered this by saying that "If you don't like snakes or can't deal with rodents, don't get this for your kid," and by saying the initial cost of the blue tongued skink will put it out of the price-range for most kids to buy themselves. I used to think my mom was just mean for not letting me get a pet snake or lizard when I was a kid, but now as an adult I understand why. She didn't feel comfortable caring for those animals, and even if I did everything for it, it would still ultimately be her responsibility.

The problem is too many kids get "bored" of their reptiles, leading to a lot of homeless reptiles. I'd be fine with reptiles for kids as long as the parents are willing to care for them regardless.

My son loves our leopard gecko, ours being the keyword. It's the parents responsibility to make sure the child (no matter how old) is meeting all the needs of any pet. This is why my son doesn't have his own pet, instead pets are family pets; it's the best of both worlds. My son wants a bearded dragon next but I told him first we need to make sure we can care for our leopard gecko properly and try to find one that needs a home before buying one from the pet store. Our leopard gecko is a rescue like our other animals and I prefer giving a home to an animal in need before buying a baby/juvenile. I just want to make sure I gave an animal in need a great home if I can before buying one that has better chances. Not hating or anything, just personal preference.
@melissamuddle6459
@melissamuddle6459 5 жыл бұрын
SteviiLove well said. We don't allow "kid" pets either. When we get a new pet my husband and I agree to be responsibility for that animal and all of its needs for the duration of its life. That means we may have it after our son leaves home. That also means my son may not get every pet he wants (I do not want to care for a water turtle for instance). Also, caring for our pets is a part of our daily routine. My son and I do it together with me supervising so every need is met every day. I believe this is the best way to teach kids responsibility and reverence for life as well as a ton of other things like patience, working with others, etc.

I’m 12 years old, I love reptiles, mostly snakes. I would love to own either Ball Python or Corn Snake, but my mom won’t allow me to get one😢. I have done research from both animals, I have writed those informations on paper, I have been wanting snake for over year, I am ready for it, but my mom just won’t let me get it😢. Lizards and tortoises could maybe be good but I think they eat daily or almost daily, which I don’t like, cause sometimes I visit city for 2 days where I used to live, so those lizards and tortoises could die to hunger, which is reason why I don’t want lizard/tortoise. Snakes eat once per 1week/2weeks, depends on snake, which would be much better, and I love snakes more. My mom said I can have snake when I move out, but I would want snake when I’m still kid. Edit : Omg guys I’m actually gonna get a CORN SNAKE soon! I don’t know when yet, but I know it will be soon!

Clint's Reptiles Right now there isn’t enough room for terrarium in my bedroom, because I have Guinea pigs. We have dog, cat and those Guinea pigs, and my mom thinks thats enough, and said I could get snake when I move out, or when my guinea pigs die to old age. One of my Guinea pigs is 3 years old, other ones age is unknown, but it might die this or next year. I have got bit bored of Guinea pigs, but I don’t sell them cause they are cute and I still love them, but I don’t want another one, which means after older one dies to old age, I have to spend much more time with younger one, cause they are social animals, so I think I am not 100% ready for snake yet cause I have Guinea pigs, but couple years later I might be, and then I probably show this video to my mom. And I don’t want my Guinea pigs to die so I could get snake, I want them to have happy life till they die to old age, and then I possibly could get snake. Atleast I have couple Viviparous Lizards on my backyard, so I kinda have reptiles, but cause they are protected species in Finland, I can’t take them to terrarium. And atleast wikipedia says guinea pigs should be in couples or groups, but I don’t want to sell that younger Guinea pig when older one dies or both of them now, cause I love them, and if I would sell them, I would never see them again, so I think I should spend much more time with younger one after older one dies to old age.

I hope to be seeing the both of you for a long long time! OMG WHAT A FUN DAD TO HAVE!! I bet any one of us who watch you wish we had a dad like you who loved all things scaley or slithery and AMAZING!! My first reptile was a Garter Snake that I caught when I was 7. It scared my mom to death when Elizbeth-(I was just guessing she was a girl. I had no boy names picked out) When Lizzy escaped her "enclosure (a shoe box with holes poked in it) and ran away. I was heart broken. My dad went looking for her with me...we found her the next day....well what was left of her I should say. My cat found her when she busted out of jail. I was so sad. My dad explained the "Circle of life) to me that day. I will never forget that moment. It is a really a special memory for me to have. All of these animals on the list are great pets, but my experience working in a local reptile pet store showed me that temperament usually is more important to parent and child than anything else. For example, kids were usually afraid of the fast movements of corn snakes but would fall in love with the chill ball python. Great video though :) you are definitely my favorite reptile channel.

I'd like to add a few cons to the leopard gecko that can be pretty big ones. -They can be flighty or scare easily (depending on the individual gecko) but most do not enjoy loud sounds and fast movement. So a kid screaming and flailing all around can cause the gecko enough stress to lose that tail. The kid should be as calm and quiet as Owen. -The moist hide upkeep can be a bit much to remember for a kid, or parent. And if not keeping up with it, you risk bad shed, which means stuck shed and possible toes falling off (Which is a HUGE problem, even for experienced keepers). Also if you dont do it right (i.e soak the moss) you can grow fungus, which leads to IR and then a vet visit or death for the gecko. -They do need a form of heat source and a thermostat, so that's another thing the parents most likely will have to keep on top of. Other then that, they are great for kids. Just, I'd probably say older kids that are calm and can manage all that upkeep. Or mom and dad need to also commit to the well being of the gecko.

I always enjoyed looking at the guy, even if he wasn't held. the crested gecko I got at 11 is also great. we couldn't keep the humidity up so she got injured, but she's doing better now. both are quite friendly

I think I would put bearded dragons over the turtles just because of water filtration and such, but I definitely agree with the rest. Here in southern Illinois there are many corn fields, and where there are corn fields there are corn snakes, it’s fun to go out and grab them in the morning when there basking (5/6) depending on the season. Even the wild ones are pretty easy to handle, plus by hold them your helping to warm them so win win. I also use to have some leopard geckos and I love those little guys.

When I was a kid, I kept three fire belly toads. One of them disappeared the same day my step-brother "found" a baby turtle in our backyard. I'm still salty because it was my favorite toad that went "missing." Took him almost 15 years, but he did eventually confess to giving the toad to one of his friends in exchange for the turtle.

same as my brother i used to have 3 garden snails named shellbert, shellete and shellmon (yes i used to watch a lot of digimon) and basically my fav was shellbert and my frikin stoopid brother smashed it on a stone! they were pretty small about the size of your pinky BUT HE SMASHED SHELLBERT! THE FIRST SNAIL I EVER GOT! from then on i never got a pet ever again and now i play video games and thinking about getting a reptile. (by the way all 3 of them were full grown adults and culd live in even less then 1 gallon and they lived very happily i eventually realeased them into the wild. (they were wild caught)
