Mourning geckos (Lepidodactylus lugubris) are some of the most interesting geckos in the world. Parthenogenetic geckos, these guys, or rather gals, are all female and reproduce asexually. It's crazy! When my dad was stationed in Hawaii and I was 12 I used to catch mourning geckos all the time. In Hawaii they are practically under every loose piece of tree bark. At one point I had this giant 30 gallon glass aquarium I got from a garage sale for five bucks and I tricked it out. I had this 10 inch tall tiny waterfall style fountain I put in for a substitute water bowl. In the bottom I put dirt and wood chips from the garden as substrate and I used fresh fern leaves and pieces of palm fronds picked from the garden and pieces of fallen tree bark and sticks as hides. I fed them by catching tiny insects and putting small pieces of papaya, mangoes and other fresh fruits in a little bowl. At one point I think I had more than fifty of them in a thriving little colony and then my mom realized how many I had and made me release most of them back out into the garden and from then on I wasn't allowed to keep more than twenty.

Lucky lol I just have a lot of frogs and toads(Which I absolutely love) around my area. I may find the occasional turtle or Gartner snake though. I'd have to look extremely hard to find a gecko or salamander where I live.

I accidentally left a small gap one night in the main mourning gecko tank and I thought for sure if anyone got out they were gone. Two days later the one that did get out was sitting on the mesh top waiting to get back in for breakfast. We were so lucky. She's a saucy thing.

I have a colony of these beautiful little Geckos. They are amazing to have. I started with 3 but my colony has grown to the point where I'm not 100% how many I have at any given time lol. They are super fast. Had an adult escape and found her 3 months later and reintroduced her to her colony. Have also found babies in my Crested Gecko tank when they have escaped also.These ladies are true escape artists and will sit on the back of food bowls and escape through gaps in doors when you open them. They also make adorable little chirps when there are a lot of them. I keep lots of different geckos (Lechie, Giant Day, Crestie, Gargoyle, Leo and Mourning) and they are all so awesome and different its amazing.

@@thewizkid9228 I have them in a bioactive setup. The substrate is a mix of Arcadia earthmix, charcoal, sphagnum moss and leaf litter. For a more simple setup pay close attention to how Clint has done his enclosure. Sphagnum moss is a good substrate in such a setup. Hope this helps 😊

Not only these little geckos can breed like this there is 3 other animals that can breed like a morning gecko: a scorpion,a certain population of whip tailed lizards,the biggest lizard in the world the komodo dragon and some stick bugs

They're exhibiting mating behavior, but not technically mating according to most definitions. 'mating' has a more specific meaning in biology than 'sexual activity' or 'sexual behavior', which would be accurate terms to refer to what these lizards are doing.

I have two now. And it's fascinating just how different their personalities are and how smart they can be. The youngest one had well demonstrated that she's a great little problem solver by the first day that I had her. She hooks her sheds onto plants and walks in the opposite direction to pull all the skin off in one move and has learned that I deliver the food so will chirp and glance and spiral around on the front of her container near her food bowl when it's empty to get my attention so I change it for fresh. She runs rings around most of my other lizards mentally and is still a juvenile. Can't wait until she's an adult and can make her own pals. The older one doesn't like her at all.

Genetic variation is the best defense against viruses, so if all these guys are genetically the same, a virus could wipe out the entire species. This happened with the banana in the past.

I've got my colony in a large, live planted, bioactive Exo Terra arboreal viv. The edges are all taped up, the sides of the doors, everywhere. And I have a strip of bath sealant to take care of the gap where the doors don't quite meet in the center. The tape is all gold, so it looks quite good and I've had no escapees. There is still plenty ventilation because of the mesh lid. My only issue arises when I need to catch some for rehoming - that is not an easy task and requires at least two sets of eyes to make sure no one makes a quick exit! They'd not last long in winter in Scotland! Lovely wee things they are, I thoroughly enjoy watching and listening to them :)

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and for some reason these geckos just don’t exist here at all. Nobody ships them here either which just sucks haha. I’m planning on getting a couple from someone in Ontario, unfortunately it will cost me an arm and a leg for just 2 of them but I am hoping to sell them once they reproduce and I’m super excited to take on this project thanks to this channel. Where I live these geckos are found living in peoples’ houses. I’ve seen some in my house. We also have Madagascar gold dust geckos who are aggressive and I’ve seen them trying to eat Mourning geckos. I remember I went to Pizza Hut with my family and outside the window was a bunch of mourning geckos just sitting on the window ledge. Never would’ve thought these geckos would be in the pet trade.

Hell yeah these are the best lizard. I've had all kinds and nothing has captured my interest more than my little cloning mourning geckos. I started with two and they turned into....a lot...made enough money from selling their hatchlings that I bought some dart frogs to live with them, now here is one thing I have learned if you want to try this mix; provide lots of tubes that stay dry inside and do not get directly misted. The hatch-rate of eggs plummeted when I added a misting system, until I figured out it was cause the eggs were getting wet.

Nah, these geckos do have 'sex' with each other, even though it makes no sense for them to need that. I suppose some other parthenogenic animals really are asexual, but these ones, if anything, show how deeply ingrained in animal behaviour sexuality is.

I saw these little guys in the wild all the time in my trip to Hawaii! I managed to catch one with just my hands and I called her John… I didn’t know they were all females with the same genes! They’re like little amoebas, it’s adorable!!! John also jumped straight onto my face after lookin at me funny. It was an… experience. Hope John’s doing alright today.

Thanks, Clint! After seeing your videos on these tiny insect geckos, I did a little research and got 2 of them a few months ago and they have been so much fun to watch and so easy to care for-which has been great since my health isn’t very good at the moment. I named them Miss Piggy and Kermie because the bigger one has the habit of pigging out on the food and chasing Kermie around for a bit, chirping, when she comes out to eat. Kermie is less afraid of me than Miss Piggy and seems to like to hang out in the corner of their enclosure closest to me, which is nice because it means I get to watch her when she sheds and does her adorable eye licks. I have them in my bedroom so I can watch them and care for them easily when I’m not feeling well. It’s fun to listen to their chirps at night.

I have never heard of a reptile reproducing asexually. This is so cool! I'd like to see video on the Rosy Boa or African House Snake. If you wanted to do amphibians, the ribbed newt looks awesome. I just saw one a few weeks ago. I had never seen them in USA.

I got one of these about 2 months ago together with my dart frogs in a fairly large bio-active jungle vivarium. I just havn't seen it again since, too much jungle to hide in. The frogs are doing great so I guess the gecko should be fine as well.

I recommend cohabbing mourning geckos with dart frogs; as long as the enclosure can facilitate arboreal behavior, then it should be appropriately humid and warm for both mourning geckos and dart frogs. Best of all, since dart frogs do not have toe pads and mourning geckos and fruit flies do, then mourning geckos can get the fruit flies that escape the dart frog(s).

Boy that really sold me on getting chameleon geckos instead should I ever expand into geckos other than the magnificent leopard gecko! Mourning geckos are indeed stellar, but I don’t think I could deal with the pressure of protecting all those tiny lives during transport. Thanks for all the hard work this year. One point (im no expert but from what ive read on these in particular) is that when you have two they stimulate each other to start reproducing, so in theory if you just get one you shouldnt get nearly as many, if any

Im planning on upgrading mine to a 40 gallon aquarium converted to a vertical terrarium with a custom acrylic door. Use real fine mesh vents and itll be a large elaborate setup for a colony that the babies cant escape from 😊
