I have had my Argentine B&W Tegu roughly 14 years. Everything in this video is confirmed by my observations. There is very aggressive adolescent stage, they do not like to be held, they do accept petting and rubbing and will stay in your lap. For about 15 seconds lol. My tegu is in a 3' x 6' enclosure although I do let him wander around my office after he poops. I let him out after he defecates because otherwise he will defecate as soon as he gets out. Oreo does not want to soil his own home. I use a big plastic storage tub filled with coconut bark, with the top on, as a hide box and I keep the bark pretty moist. I cut a hole in the box up about 6" on the side so he can climb in and out. Bert Langerwerf's breeding facility was where he came from originally, as a hatchling. Bert Langerwerf wrote the book (literally) on B&W Tegus. Unfortunately, Bert passed a number of years ago and I don't know much about where to get a good captive-bred tegu. My experience with wild-caught Savannah monitors has not been good. FWIW. B&W Tegus are wonderful pets but plan on them being around as long as a well taken care of housecat if you do as the video suggests. BTW, our cat was very interested in Oreo. Oreo could care less. Cats seem too big to eat, to small to worry about. In myexperience, lizards classify the world into three things: food, foe, and furniture.

Something he didnt mention in this video: Tegus are quite intelligent. They like to explore and interact with stuff and love to be interacted with. They dont just sit there like a bump on a log and do nothing but eat, drink and poop like say a bearded dragon would. Tegus and certain Monitors are almost problem solving smart which makes them really wonderful pets for those who can care for them properly. Dont keep them cooped up in their enclosure all day every day (thats mean), let them out to explore and pet them, they really do enjoy it, and you can really tell that they do.

I have had a tegu for about 6 years now. Some of the problems you mentioned aren't much of a problem for me and might not be. She loves being held and sometimes walks right up to us wanting to get picked up. Tegus have very distinct and unique personalities and not all will be like this, but if you want to train them to be held, definitely get a strong grip on them and hold at both sets of legs and prepare to get scratched by the tegu trying to climb around on you. As for the enclosure, this may be unique to us, but the people we got her from actually rescued her from an abusive life. She was held in too small of a tank to where she could hardly move and her tail grew bent because of it. This has led to trauma for her so if she if put in an enclosure at all, she will hurt herself trying to get out. We solved this by letting her roam around like our cats, and they get along very well. We do have to clean up her poop all around the house, but you would need to anyway in an enclosure. When it comes to relationships with other pets, she never attacks our cats, we just recently got a kitten and the kitten loves her. The kitten will play with her, making playful swipes, and yes it is playful the scratches would be much different if it wasn't, and my tegu just sits there not caring, occasionally pushing her gently with her tail if the kitten tries to bite it. Tegus are amazing, definitely think before you get one, but if you know what you're doing, getting one will be one of the best decisions of your life.

We watched this video and did extensive research on B&W Argentine Tegus and we finally got our own. Gus Gus seems like an angel compared to ours, but our tegu is going through puberty right now. They are incredible creatures. We got ours as a baby and it’s so interesting to see how quickly they grow!

Just got mine about a week and a half ago from a guy that rescues them in the wild. Been interacting with him for a hour at a time and after the third time he finally let me pet him back with no aggressive behavior...baby steps with this guy but already falling in love with him:) Great videos thank you very much.

This lovely presentation is how I convinced my sweetheart, who was of the "let's START with a really big reptile!!!" school, that we should look at something a bit more beginner-sized. Not because Gus-Gus isn't 100% adorable, but because we need to be realistic about the size, strength and needs of the animal and whether we can handle them. Realistically, that's a no right now, but gosh Tegus are lovely. That said, the look of dawning horror on my sweetie's face when he learned that Tegus can GET UP AND RUN ON THEIR HIND LEGS was absolutely. Freaking. Priceless.

I have a 2 year old right now named Sephiroth. He is going through the "terrible twos" as they say. Thats ok though, I try and do whatevers right by him. Had him since he was a baby, and its been an interesting journey. If you are interested in getting one, be prepared. Make sure on top of your research that you have a vet in the area who specializes in reptiles, and preferably a retailer who can provide pinky mice and other specialized foods. Future housing must be thought out of course.

Could you make a video going over reptiles you think would be great for people with disabilities? Like weight limits or hand tremors or hand numbness or just being a bit slower than others. I love tegus but I have a lot of health issues that make me unlikely to be able to care for them so I'll just love them from afar.
@ceopet7 жыл бұрын
Crimson Rose You could look into some of the look at no handle species and see if it's feasible for you. Look into the many different "Day Geckos" they are really pretty to look at and fun to watch but shouldn't be handled.
@crimsonrose46486 жыл бұрын
Charlotte Olson well I need them to be handleable because if I clean and the species moves fast I might not be able to safely transfer them while cleaning or catch them if they do get loose.
@isislee9196 жыл бұрын
Crimson Rose that’s where a bioactive enclosure would come in handy! the setup would be a little pricey, but it would require virtually no maintenance by you, so you’d never have to handle them. this is because you’d have a “clean up crew” of springtails, isopods, earthworms, etc that clean the substrate for you
@forlornqueen6 жыл бұрын
@@crimsonrose4648 eastern box turtles. You can keep two or three together if you want as they are not aggressive, they aren't to fast or heavy and are very hardy. They will need a uvb basking light and are small enough for a tortoise table if you need them elevated but I prefer to dedicate a room or corner of a room with low corral you can step over but they can't climb out. They love strawberrys and blueberrys, greens, flowers, and you could probably buy a commercial box turtle food or tortoise chow to supplement their fresh salads otherwise you'll want to put some extra thought into the diet and maybe add some insects. They are beautiful and if you buy captive breed babies they will live the rest of your life so you can get very attached. You can find breeders online. Just make sure you are committed permanently and have a safe stable home before getting any

I rewatched your video:) Clint, I raise fancy poultry. Rare poultry. It is so ironic to see the similarities between reptiles and birds:) My parrots and my poultry,turkey,ducks,geese, etc. are sooo much like reptiles:) Birds can see ultraviolet light,as well,as I am sure your know,they are wild when they see you for the first time in outdoor light. I got the idea to keep my tegu outdoors as I do natural settings for everyone. Humidity will be an issue of course,as it is dry here. Escape is something I am good at preventing.I build my own and have 3 barriers for each enclosure. I just think the space I could give my tegu outdoors would be so much more plentiful than indoors. Again thanks so much. I am a senior lady and have wanted a tegu for 12 years. I retired so now I think it is time:)
