As a native Arizonan, I’ve had the privilege of seeing a Gila monster only once - my biology professor specialized in reptiles (she maintained a collection of rattlesnakes on display on campus and is actually one of a handful of people in the Phoenix metro area who had a fridge of antivenin on hand for when people got bit by venomous reptiles), and one day I came into class to see her holding a dehydrated juvenile Gila monster that had been found by a construction crew. It was so amazing to witness, so brightly colored, scales of brilliant tangerine and shiny black. Edit: Apparently they love eggs, so if you’re ever hiking in the Sonoran desert at dawn or dusk you can crack some chicken eggs and return a while later and there’s a chance you’ll see one!

I'm a science teacher from the UK. I have to say I have learnt so much from Clint. Not only am I discovering animals that I've never heard of before, but I am learning about the biology of reptiles and their optimum environmental conditions. I've recommended this channel to a student of mine who is into reptiles, he started watching it over the lockdown period and told me he loved it. Would be awesome if we could have a video specifically on adaptations - like what the word means and a few examples using different reptiles. I would love to use something like that in my lessons to grab their attention around the topic being taught and also show them how being a scientist (Like Clint) isn't all about lab coats but can also be plenty of fun!

Sounds like honestly the one my cousin had. His mother got it from a sketchy "pet store" and said it was some other lizard. No idea what it was or how old Iggy was when we got them but Iggy was not impressed by 6 children constantly checking on them for 10 years. We had no idea what Iggy even was for 2 years until my uncle had a friend come over and asked if it was his reptile then looked like he laid and egg when he was told it was my 9 year old cousins lizard and just casually holding him like a cat.

I'm only half way through the video, but honestly, I'm surprised Clint didn't give it a 4 for handleability. But I guess I've never thought a Gila Monster was a scary animal. Yes, they can hurt you, but from my very uneducated perspective, they look like an animal that you would have to try to provoke before it would hurt you. I'm not suggesting it would be okay to handle it roughly or to startle it or to grab a wild one - that would all fall under trying to provoke it. I concede that Clint probably knows more about them than I do, and probably has good reason to rank this amazing beautiful creature as he did. Thank you so much Clint for showcasing them .

We had a Gila Monster when I was in college. His name was Georgio, and he was captured in a backyard when we were at a party. The homeowner was going to kill it because they were told they were terrible monsters and lethal, and it was at a time when pest control couldn't come. We thought that it would be best to capture it for them, so I grabbed it and put it in a paint bucket. We ended up sticking him in a tank and then upgraded his home to a pretty large enclosure. He was pretty chill unless you messed with him, always ate happily and was beautiful to look at. Super cool animals, I loved him, but not the best pet if you want a lot of interaction with your pet. They aren't flexible and can't really turn on you, but I will say he's sort of underplaying the pain of being bitten. My buddy was grabbed by one on the finger and he said the pain was by far the worst he'd ever felt, and he had been stabbed twice. I'd gladly let a truck run over my foot over gila bite. I'd totally own one again though

i had never seen a gila monster skull before, had to do a double take! my state actually allows the ownership of these guys but if i ever plan on getting one i will probably get a blue tongue first just so i have a feel for their care requirements

Clint. I have been keeping reptiles of all types (including avian) for over 40 years, and love your shows! About 20 ya, I raised a baby pigeon and fell in love with those birds. It was affectionate and "smart." Have you considered an episode on pigeons? There is so much to show and talk about that could dispel the common myths that they are dirty or disgusting and if you haven't considered them, they might just be the best pet avian reptile for you!

Was accidentally bitten by a gila in Arizona while handling one They can be a bit tricky because they can be so calm and kinda slow but strike lightning fast. Was without a doubt the worst bite I've ever taken was like my hand was in a fire for 2 months and i couldn't pull it out and almost lost the finger luckily surgery worked. Needless to say a healthy respect and much more care while handling

Was the potential loss of your finger due to an infection of the bite or the trauma caused by the bite?
