Gila monsters (Heloderma suspectum), like their cousins the Mexican beaded lizards (Heloderma horridum), are venomous lizards. As such, they are some of the most famous, and the most feared lizards on the planet. They can't possibly be good pets. Right? Clint explores these beautiful, notorious, dangerous lizards to determine if these beautiful lizards deserve their notoriety for being dangerous, and if the Gila monster is the best pet lizard for you.

Sounds like honestly the one my cousin had. His mother got it from a sketchy "pet store" and said it was some other lizard. No idea what it was or how old Iggy was when we got them but Iggy was not impressed by 6 children constantly checking on them for 10 years. We had no idea what Iggy even was for 2 years until my uncle had a friend come over and asked if it was his reptile then looked like he laid and egg when he was told it was my 9 year old cousins lizard and just casually holding him like a cat.

As a native Arizonan, I’ve had the privilege of seeing a Gila monster only once - my biology professor specialized in reptiles (she maintained a collection of rattlesnakes on display on campus and is actually one of a handful of people in the Phoenix metro area who had a fridge of antivenin on hand for when people got bit by venomous reptiles), and one day I came into class to see her holding a dehydrated juvenile Gila monster that had been found by a construction crew. It was so amazing to witness, so brightly colored, scales of brilliant tangerine and shiny black. Edit: Apparently they love eggs, so if you’re ever hiking in the Sonoran desert at dawn or dusk you can crack some chicken eggs and return a while later and there’s a chance you’ll see one!

I'm a science teacher from the UK. I have to say I have learnt so much from Clint. Not only am I discovering animals that I've never heard of before, but I am learning about the biology of reptiles and their optimum environmental conditions. I've recommended this channel to a student of mine who is into reptiles, he started watching it over the lockdown period and told me he loved it. Would be awesome if we could have a video specifically on adaptations - like what the word means and a few examples using different reptiles. I would love to use something like that in my lessons to grab their attention around the topic being taught and also show them how being a scientist (Like Clint) isn't all about lab coats but can also be plenty of fun!

I’ll be. This one surprised me just like the snapping turtle video did. That gilla monster was more patient with handling than my leopard gecko! Of course, that gilla monster is not my leopard gecko, so it looses a million points, anyway. 😁 Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving. 🍁

If you keep more than one PLG in a tank you get to hear them yell at each other in major domestic disputes. All night. Then when cleaning the tank one day you discover they've been laying eggs all the time they were yelling at each other. Months!

Uh Not all Neurotoxic venoms are non damaging. Kraits will screw up both you pre synaptic and post synaptic nerve endings. Not something you would want. That being said Gila Monsters would probably not kill you unless you are allergic to their venom. But it should be noted ones I have messed with each have their own personalities so one maybe really laid back other might be snappy as hell.

WOAH. Even despite other more spicy creatures you have had on the show I didnt expect a Gila monster. You are full of surprises Clint and as always im in awe of your steely bravery! I remember when Coyote Peterson took a bite from one of those guys and had some pretty awful symptoms. But they sure are gorgeous to look at ❤

Hey Clint because of this video I decided to spend a few months learning as about Gilas I had wanted one for years. I verified all I knew and learned about handling the species. I waited till I found a legal captive born baby and got it last Saturday. The baby I got last week is the friendliest reptile i have ever owned. I love him so much thanks for peaking my interest in Gilas

I JUST saw one of these for the first time ever in an AZ riparian environment. The dog was intrigued as well, so I'm thankful she came when called and the monster was booking it back into the brush. It was exciting. You can go on so, so many hikes and never see one of these guys.

I live in southern AZ and many lizards, snakes, & tortoises have visited my yard ... except for the elusive Gila monster. Thanks for doing this! All other sources I can find say they're not good pets, simply because they're venomous and not always legal. But in my opinion, if it's legal and you don't mind the risk of pain, who's to say it's a bad pet?

Well hi there Clint! Don't know if you'll see this, but on the off chance that you do I LOVE your passion for reptiles and your energy in your videos. I've been deeply in love with reptiles for as long as I can remember and that was part of the reason I decided to pursue the biology degree I'm currently working on during the pandemic. I found your channel at the start of November when I decided to adopt my first reptile, a juvenile female gargoyle gecko, and since then I've binged all of your videos and they've greatly helped me in deciding on the next reptiles to take on in the future of my reptile keeping journey!! Thank you for all you do for the reptile hobby :)
