@Carly Steffen , Naw. She speaks perfect English. From what I heard , the director did not want to confuse the viewers. This girl here is supposed to be a different character. But he had a hard time to find Vietnamese actress. So not only he dubbed her voice, but he also gave her a fake nose to wear. It was unnecessarily in my opinion. But then again, some people might think this girl meant to be the incarnation of the raped girl if they were too similar. Who knows...
@JR-ju3kj5 жыл бұрын
I heard that, too. She reminds me of the retired former child actress, Carrie Henn, from Aliens. Likewise for Hen, who delivered an impressive and gripping performance as Rebecca ''Newt'' Jordan, the lone survivor of a colony decimated by the monstrous alien ''Xenomorphs'',Aliens was Henn's first and last movie. I wonder why neither one of them ever acted again? But in the lone movies that they did do, they left behind memorable and astounding performances.

Well, it's the music...and the completion of the scene and his thoughts that I found so compelling within this last segment of the film.. It was very moving. Her walking into the distance, and getting smaller and essentially disappearing from view is a metaphor for how he's now able to start letting go of the thoughts memory of her and the war. He turns away with introspection and deep thought, with his hands on his hips...as he fades away. It was a very powerful portion of this scene. That's why the director arranged the scene that way and included it all in the film .If it wasn't important,...he would have cut the scene where this person who uploaded it to KZbin did. I have two questions for long-time residents of San Francisco. First, where exactly in SF does this scene take place at? Secondly.....Please tell me that the SF skyline (as depicted here) is erroneous as most of those buildings could not have existed during the time that this scene supposedly takes place. .....the skyline looks very late 80s, and nothing like how it probably did back when this scene was supposed to have taken place. Granted, digital technology didnt exist much back in 1988 (when this film was shot), so they had to take certain liberties in hoping that either the audience wouldnt pay much attention to the skyline in the background, or would be accepting of it knowing that not much could have been done to omit it, except for the typical matte painting, which would have probably not blended too well with the actors in the immediate foreground.

@gorfulator9 жыл бұрын
Ok you figure it all took place in ...round it off to 1970... this last scene was supposed to be modern day (mid-late 80's); factor in the script was concieved/written 5 years before the shoot. This vet carried this trauma for years. What throws you off is that MJF still looks young in that scene. Yes they could have done as better job ageing him. When in SF, take the j-chuch all the way to 24th street ! it's a fun muni ride.
@allendever9498 жыл бұрын
+TheMireaux7 War ended around 1975, MJF character would only have to be around 28-32 yrs old in this scene, placing it around 1985-89, so a mere ten years after the war. SF skyline did not change dramatically from 1975 to this scene, and the Muni light rail vehicles you see here came in 1982.
@josephwolfe87717 жыл бұрын
Actually guys the scene is very well dated. How? Scene opens inside subway car. Guy holding newspaper with 'Nixon Resigns' headline. The date is August 8th,1974. I remember the day well as it was my 11th birthday. Our church group went to Six Flags Over Georgia that day. Remember everyone talking about it .Got home that evening and on the news theres Nixon flashing the peace sign as he boards the chopper. Never gonna forget that day.
@peteralbert1485 Жыл бұрын
@@josephwolfe8771 The only real goof is that Muni didn’t open its light-rail subway until 1982. BART was running by 1975, and the Pyramid and B of A towers did dominate the skyline back then, but the J Church was still an old-style streetcar line in 1975 - and not the post-1982 light rail vehicle you see in the movie. The J streetcar line DID skirt Dolores Park like the modern light rail line does today, but instead of running in the Market Street subway (that opened 8 years after Nixon resigned), the old streetcars ran on the surface all the way down Market.

As much as I like the emotional empathy behind this scene, the premise is wrong. the Vietnam nightmare isn't over, it continues in Syria, Libya, Ukraine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Cuba. Vietnam is a mindset, it's when the USA uses aggressive force either through economic sabatage, sanctions or Ku's, assassinations or direct military action in another country that the USA doesn't like the leadership of as it acts unilaterally without congressional approval or international support.

First words I learned when I started working with Vietnamese refugees in the electronics industry around the early 80’s. That was my first exposure to Vietnamese culture, and through daily interaction by working closely with them, I became familiar with the cuisine, learned a little bit of the language and about their customs and traditions, and also heard their stories of fleeing the country during the fall of Saigon, the experience of being in overloaded boats riding low on shark-infested open waters and time spent in refugee camps. I would later visit Vietnam briefly, though only in the north (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Bac Ha, Sapa), where they use the unisex ‘Xin chao’ instead of Chao co/Chao ahn.

@@scottmcintire8634 "Xin chào" is like saying greetings in a general formal way. "Chào cô" (Hello Miss) or "Chào anh" (Hello Mister) is more direct, targeting the other person specifically. Of course it subjects to the age of the person, you will have to adjust accordingly. Glad you like our culture. We are always open and welcome everyone.

You could tell he was haunted by the fact he couldn't do anything to save her in the end. I think this was like him seeing her spirit, and her telling him to let go and forgive himself and move on.

I think that is very possible. I don't know if anyone noticed but that scarf was wrapped pretty well around her neck and would have not fallen off without her yanking it off.

This is a heavily thoughtful film.The final scene of the film is haunting, and I'm glad Michael.J.Fox is in the lead.

I just found and watched an old interview with Thuy Tu Le after the movie and she was very soft-spoken, decent and modest in personality. She spoke fluent English and wanted to become an English tutor to her fellow Vietnamese in the States. She was initially living in Paris after the fall of Saigon and later move to California upon her debut in the movie.

Honestly to me this is just sad The fact he failed to save the girl, he tried to protect and these memories will haunt him in his dreams and day life, it'll take a while to forget, but he will suffer horrible hallucinations.. Plus them son bitches will be getting out of prison Clark may be held for life, but can be let go, he's still young to be let go

Same here, this movie traumatized me so bad. I can’t ever watch it again. I can only see clips and I refuse to see the clips of when they killed her and tortured her. So sad, bc things like this probably happened.

@Roel Santos Jr , This film is based on a true story. The director saw the case in the news. There is an interview with the director. You can find it here on KZbin. Also from what I have heard, the main criminal of the incident only spent 4 years in the jail before he got out.

Same here.. when they killed her I got sad and was traumatized for days.. was angry at them 4 son bitches, and honestly not ok the sentence they got especially Clark, I wanted to see them get killed, but this is story.. they all will be out due to the fact the justice system is terrible at times,

Brilliant touching scene. The bad dream meaning the incident and the war are both over for him. He is back home and must now stop blaming himself for what happened. He must and will never forget it but it is over. He must move on and face the truth that the horrors of war are absolute. The price one pays to come home is to live with the war forever. But, the "bad dream" itself meaning the said incident as well as the war are over. He must learn to cope and move forward with what happened as well as the war as a whole. The war may be over now but the struggle itself will be forever sadly. But, he must learn to come to grips with it all and manage it as best that he can in order to move forward.

I am certain that a portion of WHY people can't get past Michael J. Fox being Alex P. Keaton is the reason why some of his movies flopped. This one, however probably outlasted the original critics careers that were both for and against this actually being a great movie. It is possibly one his best. The woman's skin color looks just like who he wanted to save, his heart goes out to who died so pointlessly. "You had a bad dream, didn't you? It;s over now, I think." Most of us haven't been to war, but many have had to continue on as life gets harder, problems mount worse and then, you have to maintain your sanity. - Although I am homeless, that means the person I was faced with starting so many arguments over, Dad is no longer apart of my life. I march through college, faced with gigantic assignments that I hope I'll save correctly so I don't have to repeat performance over. I was severely physically abused in 2012. Dad took me back in, but got colder as I did too. We got meaner and then we had a fight. I hope the 'bad dreams' of the 80's, 90's, 2000 and 2010's are over now. :.)

Amy Irving provided the voice of the actress for this scene.
@grimreaperalphax12473 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right that's because Brian de Palma couldnt use her real voice.Thuy Thu Le played both roles so her voice would be the same as a Oanh(kidnaped girl). Some people speculated that Thuy actually doesnt speak good english and that's why her voice is not used,but that's totally false,she is raised in US,so her english is flawless without any accent.
