I met Mr Clough once when I got a 3 pound 50 ticket to Old Trafford (6th round of the FA cup) 1-0 Forest (Roy Keane scored) Mr Clough walked in and I stood up to attention like a guardsman! He was terrifying but he is still my idol! Never forget you Brian! Best manager England never had!

I wish I had the chance to see him in person. So many things i would love to have asked him and I'm confident that he would've answered them too. A man of the people and always generous with his time ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️

@@weekendwarriorprospecting817 I was lucky enough to bump into him after his retirement when he was helping out at his son Simons newsagent in West Bridgford. Whoever said you should never meet your heroes was wrong. I was a bumbling wreck but he shook my hand warmly, gave me time for a brief chat and even called me "young man". Will never ever forget that moment till my final breath.

Mark I can believe that because he was loved by every true football fan. He was robbed by the FA by sir Bert millichip of England job when Ron Greenwood was given the managers job and his name wasn't even on the shortlist for an interview disgusting but true. I'm a West Ham fan and it's like Bobby Moore every truthful football fan loved him but in a different way.

He was deemed unsuitable by one man; Harold Thompson. He was the dictatorial head of the FA. He alone decided that Clough would not be England manager when Revie left in 1977. He alone appointed the yes-man Ron Greenwood. He knew that if Clough was England manager then his days as the dictator were over.

David Marchant he outstayed his welcome. When the premier league was in its infancy, and exploded in wealth, Forest were a big boy in the league, it was a land grab and they were up there challenging. A couple of seasons in, Clough was dragging them down. In the late 70s and throughout the 80s he was, for me, undisputably the best manager in the world. But by the early 90s, well I don't need to spell out the problems he has outside of football that he dragged into Forest and dragged them down .... should have been replaced sooner, I think

By giving way and buying the tie he 'owned' Clive forever. Still Clough did buy the tie. Strange personality Mr Clough. He pulled much the same stunt with the Forest coach driver once. Clough stopped the bus for the team to go for an impromptu run round a park and told the driver he had to go too as if he drove the bus for the best team in the land he had to be the fittest bus driver in the land!

Best story I heard was an apprentice was tidying up the boot room and answered the phone when it rang. Young man, this is Brian Clough, make a cup of tea and bring it to my office. The apprentice answered f**k off and slammed the phone down. The phone rang again, do you know who I am? Yes Mr Clough, do you know who I am? No, I don’t young man. Well, f**k off again. Phone slammed down again. Great man manager, who had his set of standards, and stuck to them. Only manager I know who would substitute his best player of the day if he thought he had been rude to the ref.

An absolute genius.

@andyholland8773
@andyholland8773 8 жыл бұрын
I don't personally agree that Ferguson was "Better" admittedly he won everything there was to win but to do it at United who were back then the biggest club on the planet with biggest chequebook and a reputation that attracted all the biggest players in the world. Nowadays United are no longer the biggest and other clubs have more money to spend. Cough did everything on a shoes string budget and won back to back European titles (something that ferguson failed to achieve) with players that were deemed over the hill and no other club wanted. The same feat would be to take Preston (who are currently in the same spot that forest were when cough took charge) gaining promotion from the championship then winning the premier next season followed by back to back champions league titles. I doubt Ferguson could have done that. It will never happen again. Money has ruined the sport.

Clough was a good manager but not great. He got the best out of players by bullying them and installed fear in the team. He had principles for sure and he knew his job inside out. Bill shankly was the most complete manager of all time. Like Clough he took a team from the second division and built them into the team they are today. Shankly didn't install fear in his team he installed greatness.
