The old "scientist" that lives in the Observatory is probably a professional contracted by the city. Consider the only way in to the telescope tower is through a tunnel from inside the town walls. It can be considered a municipal annex, and the scientist is paid through funding and grants provided by the city council. That's actually a pretty sweet career to have, as long as the funds keep coming.

The goron selling the powder keg requires you to have a permit, so I would say that he would probably be running an actual business rather than as a "drug-dealer" type scenario, making him employed. Basically, I feel like he is too strict on who he sells a powder keg to, and also I believe he only lets you carry 1 at once (I think some form of law?), to be considered a drug-dealer.

The Goron selling the powder keg is 100% employed. He is sharing the business space with the main bomb shop and is unaffiliated with that business. He's just renting one corner of the space, like how barber shops often have one or two chairs that they rent out to freelancers instead of employing them themselves.

Not to mention that the bomb shop owner probably wouldn't allow him to use his shop if he was doing anything shady. Though ultimately I would say that he probably shouldn't count since his business is likely an extension of the large powder keg selling Goron in Goron Village.

He sells them specifically *in* Clock Town, after all, and I don't *think* it's implied that he's some sort of traveling merchant. He's essentially running a shop-stall for Medigoron.

The Goron I say is employed, but most likely a contactor as the powder keg business posesses a liscense while the bomb shop does not. Good chance he could be travelling from Goron city to work rather than living in clocktown. Also being a contracted vendor for the bombshop, rather than being employed by the bombshop directly, I'd say he doesn't count as a resident in clocktown.

I think "nonprofit work" is a good descriptor for the Great Fairy's duties. She evidently keeps the area safe and orderly in some way, because the Skull Kid goes out of his way to destroy all 5 Great Fairies in his mission to cause chaos. Issues I have as a Majora's Mask professor: *The old lady that gets mugged in North Clock Town actually works at the bomb shop, you see her behind the counter on days 2 and 3 *Madame Aroma is stated to be the postmistress by the postman when she receives the express mail from him at the end of Anju/Kafei. The schedule on in the post office also has a message from the mayor stating "The heavens and the wife are watching" *Guru-Guru, or the song of storms guy, works in the Gorman Troupe, as that room in the hotel was booked for the entire troupe *The Happy Mask Salesman live in Hyrule, he's the same character as in OoT, not a Termanian counterpart *The toilet hand was completely skipped over, he likely doesn't pay taxes but should be mentioned *Shiro, or the invisible guard in Ikana, wears the same outfit as Clock Town's guards, meaning it's likely he is part of the force *Romani Ranch could be considered a territory of Clock Town since Cremia delivers milk and some government body must recognize the ranch. This means Cremia, the dog race lady, the cuccoo guy, and possibly the Gorman brothers MAY be considered Clock Town citizens To summarize: 2 characters not listed as employed, 1 character wrongly labeled employed, 2 characters wrongly labeled unemployed, 6 characters TBD

I would argue that all peoples in the Romani Ranch area are not to be counted among Clock Town citizens, as there are no guards stationed out there. Furthermore, what of Anju? He may inhabit the body of a child, but mentally he is an adult and presumably had a job before Skull Kid made him into a child. I would argue he is unemployed. Also, the Goron in the bomb shop should either count as employed or as a non-resident, as he sells goods imported from the Big Goron in Goron City

The Stone Mask is just a mask, probably a cursed one, it doesn't contain his spirit like the Deku, Goron, or Zora Masks. As for being discharged, that would only apply to MM3D, he's in Ikana in the original, likely as extra security since the area past him is currently ghosted up

Also, manual labour usually means having to endure a tonne of physical pain - especially given how businesses overwork their employees. Just take people in retail. Most people couldn't endure that amount of physical pain unless their livelihood depended on it.

If you called it something else to remove the stigma then for labor statistics purposes it would still need to be differentiated from jobs like, for example, lawyers and engineers.

Having worked a season as a census enumerator this series feels so spot on to my experience with sometimes having to make increasingly esoteric calls on how to report. Especially for hostile or uncooperative people or locations. I’d love to see more of these. Given how the unemployment in Ul’dah in FFXIV is a major plot point in the story I’d get a huge kick out of knowing the real number.

​@@roryschussler to an enumerator who is just judging based off of physical survey without speaking to the person in question, you would see kafei, the mayor's son who went missing, and the child who wears a mask and presumably lives inside the back of the curiosity shop, is a child and therefore unable to work. and if the enumerator knew that these two people are, in fact, the same person, then kafei would still be ineligible to work as he is in the body of a child. he is not applicable as is the rest of the clock town child population.

I don’t think Kafé or the scarecrow should count as unemployed as neither are able bodied. Kafé is currently trapped in the body of a child. While the scarecrow doesn’t count as a sentient creature. Being more of a construct than a member of a race like a Zora or Goron. The scarecrow also seems to be completely immobile. Making them not able bodied. IF you consider them a citizen of clocktown. If videos like these continue I’d like to see a data sheet on the final verdict of everyone. So we are able to argue over the semantics of the verdict over a character’s employment status. In defence of song of storms guy he’s coordinating the troupe’s music, which if he does not work for the troupe themselves then he must work for the city in coordinating the event. Even if his job is rather unglamorous it still implies that he’s employed by the mayor or is at least a subcontractor. As an econ major I came in SO ready to "um ackshually" you with the correct definition of unemployment since most people get it wrong, but you totally nailed it! The only things I can um ackshually are: 1. Some construction workers are skilled workers while others are considered unskilled. The Foreman for instance is considered skilled whereas the guy moving wood around is probably unskilled. 2. "Desk women" = receptionist.... bruh 3. The Mayor's Wife is not the First Lady as she is not married to the President or Prime Minister of Termina. However it is unlikely she is seeking outside employment so she still wouldn't be considered unemployed. 4. There are actually a lot of people formally employed in the cannabis industry due to it being legal in much of the US, including the most populated state California. Legal status of Powder Keg sales in Termina does not seem to be specified in game. 5. The bigotry of the Curiosity Shop owner is apparent if you talk to him as a Deku, he refuses to do business with you. Actually quite a few residents of Clock Town are blatantly discriminatory against Dekus, perhaps another avenue of research Hyrule Castle town employment rate would be interesting to watch *MAJOR EDIT: So I'm replaying MM right now and just got to the Powder Keg part. I redact my claims regarding its legality. The Powder Keg literally requires a _permit_ to purchase, that you obtain by demonstrating proper usage. Thus it is a regulated firearm that is definitely legal to purchase. You cannot buy the Powder Keg in Clock Town without this permit either so that shop is legitimate too. The Powder Keg can also only be sold to Gorons, but to be fair only Gorons have the physical strength to wield it properly. It could be argued that this is a reasonable form of discrimination, akin to how you can't participate in the Paralympics if you are able bodied, or even to how it's legal for filmmakers to only hire beautiful people as actors and actresses.

It is actually an interesting issue in economics because the actions they perform are definitely "work" (as seen by the fact that we pay people to do the same actions outside of the household eg restaurant chefs, daycare teachers etc) but since they don't receive a wage for their labor, they are not considered "employed", nor is their work factored into stuff like the GDP. They along with many elderly/retired people, some people with disabilities, etc would be in the category of "not seeking employment".

As far as I can tell Clergy are considered employed, so I think the Great Fairy would count as Employed since she acts as a healer and a place of worship. Although I'm not sure how we'd count actual Gods or Mythical beings in a census.

tbh it's kinda prostitution. "healing" services have been coded that way in the past in other zelda games, such as zelda 2 where a woman invites link into her home to "heal him". However she's not charging for her services, and as a result is arguably unemployed or out of the labor force. So the question really is about whether she counts as a "person". And to that I say she is a *fairy* not a *god.* While her residence may be a place of worship, she is not working, she is not paid, and she is not a deity.

You mentioned the old lady but forgot to bring her up when you were in the bomb shop. In the notebook, the description says she runs the town bomb shop. You forgot the Keaton in the north district. If you wear the Keaton mask and cut all the bushes before they disappear, it shows itself and quizzes you. You get a prize if you win. You also forgot the hand in the toilet of the inn at night. Kafei is an adult engaged to Anju who was turned into a child by the skull kid. Tingle's father lives in the swamp and Tingle travels all around, so he probably doesn't count.

I want to start by saying I love your videos, but the mask salesman is a traveling salesmen so he doesn't live in clock town so he should be treated like the Gorman troupe. and the observatory man has to be some kind of qualified astronomer likely employed by the state so I'd count him as employed or at least retired. He was probably the first to spot the moon's descent, he's providing a public good

This is literally one of the best things I've watched in a long time regarding video games as someone who spent almost 6 years in school for Urban Planning, it'd be great content to see you put video game cities into context with IRL ideals like this. No idea what games to suggest next, but fallout games would be a pretty easy one, although the nuclear apocalypse isn't exactly a great help in the realm of employment numbers.

Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game so this was incredibly neat to me. Only thing I really have to add is that while Guru-Guru (the organ grinder in the inn/laundry pool) states that he was *previously* part of an animal troupe, he is currently part of Gorman's Troupe (the one that the jugglers and dancers are with), so he would be employed but not counted as part of Clock Town.

This is an absolutely amazing video. Though I do have some concerns, questions, and rebuttals. The astronomer could both be argued to have a job (being a scientist), and also be retired due to old age, rather than be unemployed. You also forgot about the hand in the toilet, who seems like he's unemployed, but perhaps he performs a service of butt wiping? Likewise I think it's *very* important to discuss the Romani Ranch, who absolutely *are* contributors to Clock Town's economy and provide a very important function of providing milk (and other food items) to the town, and should be included in the census as a result. Do we exclude farmers from our census simply because they live outside of the urbanized city? Or do you consider this a trade partner? Another point of contention is Tingle. Yes, tingle may have a job, but he does not *live* in clock town. He has no property, no residence. Clock town is merely a place he does business. His actual home is with his father in the swamp, which you excluded from your census. Conversely I'd argue in *favor* of the local ~~weed~~ powder keg dealer. If tingle, a wandering merchant, is included, then why not our goron friend? The deku scrub obviously counts because his deed is very explicitly for clock town land. Either way, great video. I loved every second of it.

The bomb shop goron only sells powder kegs to gorons that have a "license" to buy them, which is issued in the Snowhead region. And it's clear the Bomb shop owner also has a legally installed area for the goron to do his work. So safe to say he is, in fact employed.

Very interesting, cool and informative video. :) I did a very similar project some years ago. The thread is called "Counting the Population of Termina" on Zelda Universe. Here are the differences in our definitions, counting and calculations I noticed: *South Clock Town* - counted poster-yelling-guy as employed because I assumed he's also a carpenter - counted his parents (didn't know where in Clock Town to put them) as unemployed (though maybe I have to rethink that) - didn't count the Happy Masks Salesman because I assume he is otherworldly and doesn't live in Termina *North Clock Town* - just as you I counted the bombers as unemployed, but unlike you I added them to my calculation, because they still consume resources in an economic system while adding nothing of value to it (their "helping people"-shtick is literally childsplay for me. Doesn't count as a service!) - counted the Great Fairy as employed because "healing people" for me was enough of a service - I guess this is debatable - while Tingle is definitively employed, I did put him in the Southern Swamps because I assume he lives with his father and just travels to the other regions of Termina *East Clock Town* - disagree with Honey & Darling; I counted them both as employed because they both are capable of running the shop alone and serving customers - counted ??? as unemployed (- Madame Aroma caveat: I did count her as a politician running some of Clock Towns internal affairs like the Carnival Commitee or the postal-service [she gives orders to the postman] - so of course employed) *West Clock Town* - didn't count the Scarecrow (unemployed) towards Clock Town for some reason - might have to change that now that I'm thinking about it - did count Medigoron's apprentice as employed; reasons: 1) him selling stuff still adds value to the economic system of Clock Town - I guess this is my definition here, and yours differs slightly in being more official 2) I think a Goron might permanently be stationed in Clock Town, just like the Deku Scrub *Stragglers* - Guru-Guru (Song of Storms guy) is part of the Gorman Performance Troupe, therefore he is employed - still doesn't count towards Clock Town, as you rightfully point out - counted Shikashi as a Professor or Scientist, therefore as employed - I guess this is debatable, though That gives us an unemployment-rate of *11/49 ≈ 22.45%*

I love this video but you can't just say the Great Fairy is unemployed. Tatl says upon first arrival into Clock Town: Link is cursed to be a Deku Scrub and the Great Fairy is your first point given for how to potentially fix you. Of course, we know that doesn't work out, but it implies the Great Fairy is known for somebody you can come to if you are in need of perhaps a solution to an ailment you have. Though the point must be considered that this only comes from Tatl, who is herself a fairy, so maybe that's like recommending your cousin Frank to help fix your car. Also consider that somebody who lives within Clock Town must be using its resources in some way; food, shelter, consumer goods, and so on. An employed person would be giving back to the community and the economy as a way to make up for what they consume. What need does the Great Fairy take up? She doesn't need food, her home is protected by her own brand of magic, she just stays in her fountain and doesn't take from the community. In fact I would say she gives more to the community by simple fact that if you're injured, she'll heal you FOR FREE. I argue: Great Fairy should either count as employed or shouldn't count at all.

The old lady isn't a guest, she's the mother of Anju, who owns the inn. The other people there were part of the troupe who he ended up excluding from the census. Really it's only the musician guy who's debatable as to whether he's a clock town resident.

You can live in a cheap hotel. Depending on how much it costs it'll save you lots of money. Rent,light bills, water bills and wi-fi. and don't forget some hotels give you free breakfast and lunch(at least at the ones I stayed at)it'll probably be garbage but food is food as long as it's edible. And in Japan people basically live in manga/internet Cafe's which is basically as big as your average bathroom Wi-fi can be slow as hell tho with so many people and computers. so the guests staying at the hotel could just be really really poor or want to save cash.

there's confusion because Clock Town appears to be a highly nonresidential town, largely business, so tons of people work there and presumably don't live there. and Tinkle flies to various places on his balloon, so he's got a very busy job but yeah no telling where he actually sleeps, if he ever does.
