It seems like 24-2500 FPS is an accuracy node on that barrel -- in nearly all of these videos, if I'm remembering correctly, some of the best groups are in that velocity range. Once you get to around 2600, even today, the groups started to open up and move to the right.

Johnny - Found your Utube channel recently and have watched the entire Mk262 cloning series over the past week or so ... yea I fast forwarded some. Great series. Keep it up! Not meaning to question you capabilities as a rifleman ... you make shooting sub-MOA groups look easy. But after watching all of the videos in this series I've noticed that when your groups go bad they seem to string out to the right (I'm watching the shot progression and the final result). I don't think I've seen but 1 or 2 groups that string out to the left and a few that threw flyers high or low. Watching the background and the target I'm not seeing a lot of wind, so unless there is a wind tunnel somewhere between you and the target that blows predominately from 9 o'clock I don't think the issue is wind. When I shot rimfire benchrest in a previous life, we employed tuners to eliminate the effect of barrel harmonics. It was interesting to watch group size and shape change as we "tuned" the barrel to the ammo. Of course in cernterfire the ammo is tuned to the rifle. So I'm wondering if you are having a problem with harmonics. As a suggestion you could revisit one of the loads that was strung out to the right and shoot it again with and without the can and chrono attached. Yes this would be a repeat of a test you ran many videos ago. Just thinking out loud. Jack

For this video I had a Rainier BCG in there. I have used at least 3 different BCGs in this series and they've all shot really good groups. One of them is a generic $75 semi-auto BCG that I don't remember where it came from! Every BCG I've owned has shot really well. Maybe I've been lucky, or maybe it doesn't matter that much. Either way...I will not buy another expensive BCG. My experience so far points to it being a waste of money.

Now I don't know what to do next. Decisions decisions. I have no AA2250 remaining but I do have 11 pounds of Leverevolution and plenty of all the others in this series .... a preponderance of choices leaves me with some load work-ups to get busy doing.

if you increase the OAL to 2.26 full mag length, how much more W748 and/or W760 can you get in the cartridge? I know this doesn't match what the OAL was for the BH MK262 ammo, but keeping things at full mag length just may help those slightly slower powders. Thoughts?

@Adventure_Mark6 жыл бұрын
Johnny, I have a question about interpreting your shot groups. Have you considered looking primarily at vertical spread? You mentioned wind during testing and I was wondering if that may have been affecting some of your W748 groups. My understanding is that when conducting OCW tests that the focus on finding nodes through vertical groups and less emphasis is placed on horizontal spread. It appeared your flyers were mostly to the right. Could that have been wind down range?
@JohnnysReloadingBench6 жыл бұрын
I really don't think the wind had much effect on the groups in this video. I just don't buy that there's enough influence at 100 yards to ignore horizon spread. The articles you've read are really more about long range load development methods. This barrel in particular is prone to horizontal double grouping and spread when the loads are bad, and I have other guns that like to do the same thing. I've never bought that concept of focusing on vertical spread and ignoring horizontal. There are a lot of great and successful shooters that do, though...so I'm not claiming they're full of it. I'm probably misunderstanding some basic concepts of their methods.
@Adventure_Mark6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, you made a great point that those who concentrate on vertical spread are typically shooting 300 or farther. I was excited when I saw you were testing W748 because I have had good luck with consistent weights through my Dillon powder measure. I swapped to TAC for faster speeds which also measures well. Thanks again for all your hard work, don't blow your face off!

How do you like that magnetic chronograph? If you had your money back in your pocket, would you buy it again or something else?
@JohnnysReloadingBench6 жыл бұрын
If the money was back in my pocket I would have to look REALLY hard at the LabRadar. I would probably still end up going with the Magnetospeed, but the convenience of the LabRadar is pretty awesome. That price tag sucks, though! The Magnetospeed is really dependable and has given me a couple years of almost constant use without a single problem. It was absolutely money well spent! I have found the Magnetospeed effect on groups to be very minimal, but be prepared for every jackass at the range to come up and tell you how it's screwing up your barrel harmonics. BTW...nice car. I was a hard core DSMer back in the day. Had a 90 Laser, a 94 TSI AWD, then an 05 EVO. Some chick high on pills ran a red light and I totaled my EVO. I decided to move on to other hobbies. I miss the feel of a spooling turbo!

Winchester loading data from my older manuals always states that 748 needs a magnum primer because the graphite coating makes it harder to ignite. I've shot a lot of 0.5 moa groups with 748 in 222Rem and 223. Rem 7-1/2 primers have always worked well for me or CCI 450. I could never get groups with CCI 400s and 748.

@fishrrelaxing93616 жыл бұрын
I think you should try some different brass. LC has way too much Case capacity and for what you are striving for between velocity and accuracy requires a properly compressed load. You examined the factory load but never examined the factory case. I’d say pick up some Starline and go back and redo some of the older loadings that were 90ish fill that showed ok accuracy and zero pressure signs.. with lower case cap you’ll get compressed load which equals better SD and accuracy, as well as room for pressure sign examination. You’ll also likely get some additional velocity from some that were close but not quite enough. I personally would start by cracking open an existing round like you did but then reload it with the exact same parts and powder to get a better feel for exactly how it was loaded from the start. I’m betting it’s a smaller case fill with a pretty compressed load. To be as hot as it is with the pressure it’s at with the deviation and accuracy it has it has to be very compressed.
