Well, they started the guide to guide people to workshops and gas stations in france over 100 years ago. After a while, it was extended with restaurant and hotel recommendations. So the main reason for this guide was to provide a useful service for drivers and promote the tire company while doing so (it's all about marketing). It's crazy how this ended in being the one to decide what the best restaurants of the western world are. And i would say, Yelp is a better source to find a good restaurant ;)

As a French guy, the Michelin thing doesn’t come from the fact that they made tires but maps. They had the monopoly on car maps they made with the National Institute of Geography, they were super detailed and showed hotels and restaurants, and ended up rating said hotels and restaurants. They also made maps for plenty of countries around the world and that’s how it spread. They started making a hospitality guide and focusing on that aspect when maps started disappearing.
